"Ding" is not only Dutch but also German (same meaning). Since the printing press was invented in Germany it's likely that the word rather comes from the German word than the Dutch.

Thank you for this. I tried looking this up 15 years ago and found nothing online. You've just answered a mystery that I always forget about when I'm able to look for, one that kept me awake some nights as a kid. I'm surprised that I didn't become obsessed with it. My curiosity did inspire me to learn calligraphy and fueled my obsession with lettering and fonts. I would probably read a book about the history of the main fonts.

I think a few crucial points are missing from this video, so here's my take: Digital documents typically don't store the graphical representation of each character, they only store character codes, and it's the software's job to take these codes and turn them into displayable characters. Nowadays documents are usually encoded with Unicode, that associates unique codes to every character. This means that regardless of the font you use the same character code will be represented with the same symbol, only its style will be different. But a few decades ago when Unicode wasn't widely supported, document were encoded with specific code pages. Code pages are limited to represent typically 128 or 256 different characters, that didn't leave any room for dingbats. However in rich text documents it is possible to associate different fonts to different sections of text. Wingdings is essentially a trick that associates completely different symbols to the codes that represent normal characters in the code page, which means you can use normal characters and dingbats in the same document.

This guy: Dutch word for thing The German language: am I a joke to you? On a more serious note: why Dutch specifically? It _could_ be from the Dutch word, but it could just aswell come from any other language that has 'Ding' in its vocabulary (I checked it and apparently only Dutch and German have that exact spelling of 'Ding' in their language). I might sound a bit salty or whatever (which is not my intention) but it vaguely feels like someone typed 'ding' into google translate's auto detect and used the first language that popped up as a (potential) origin. Another reason why this might be important to note is because Hermann Zapf _is_ German after all so that draws a strong connection towards German and away from Dutch. Anyway, this is extreme nitpicking. The video was nice and informative and I liked it alot.

Oddly this video came recommended to me after I Googled for the Windings 'cheatsheet', because it's also a font which can be used to create the minimise, maximise/restore and close icons on the control box of a window titlebar without the need to add unnecessary image resources to a program, since the font is guaranteed to be on every Windows machine. (Edit) Actually I ended up using Webdings. If anyone's interested, '1' is maximise, '2' is restore, '0' is minimise and 'r' is close.
