I love how much you can tell Oda was inspired by various historical and likely fictional (e.g., movies, myths) events. The ability to tie these into a world in a fantastical way, without making it overly depressing is impressive. To me, some WG actions feel initially inspired by very specific world history (e.g., some of the human experiments, certain kingdoms), but then are work-shopped to fit the world and then likely draw on other history or media, sometimes across very different periods. Because of the consistent theming in the series and the initially reserved nature of the darker themes, it really does come across as surprisingly realistic and relevant. I joked with a friend after watching Punk Hazard about leaving it to Oda to deal with themes of crime, kidnapping, lost childhood, human experiments, drug addiction (including an OD), poisonous gas, and corruption in a borderline kid-friendly manner.

The World Government in One Piece is by far the most accurate depiction of how an all-powerful dystopian government would actually work and function, far more-so than other commonly cited examples in fiction such as Star Wars or 1984. One of the most impressive parts of One Piece, to me, is how much knowledge and inspiration Oda has been able to gain from the world around him while simultaneously writing a 25+ year long weekly manga series. Just as he writes in his story, it seems like he has never stopped his own pursuit of knowledge and the truth in his personal life. Very remarkable from someone as successful and wealthy as he has become.
@Quark21411 ай бұрын
My main problem with the One Piece world is that its logistics are noticeably inconsistent. So supposedly the One Piece world is 7 times larger than Earth, it's mostly an ocean world with islands scattered throughout it, an all encompassing government having to run a behemoth that size would be an absolute nightmare, when old fashioned ship faring is all you've got. You need to sail massive distances to reach your destination, and the waters are all extremely dangerous filled with Sea Kings and Pirates. People often joke about how Dragon does fuck all in the story, personally i like to think he's just busy running logistics since his revolutionary army is spread throughout the world. As for what type of Dystopia i prefer, for mr my favorite is still WH 40k, (has plenty of issues and inconsistencies as well), but i don't know there's a certain charm to it. This whole evil dystopia that needs to be overthrown, i've seen in time and time again, but the idea that yes, it's a dystopia, it's living hell, everyone is aware of it, but it's the best we've got so everyone fights to defend it is kinda of nice spin.
@arrownibent5980 Жыл бұрын
I think the way in which the reader is slowly shown how the Government rules in a dystopic fashion is parallel to the experience of figuring out the world through the Strawhat experience as they travel and broadening our scope of what's good or bad. If you only read Shells town Morgan is a corrupt marine, but you get to Syrup Village and your view of him changes, if you read Aarlong park you think the fishmen are monsters, but as you go on it becomes clear that the adventure is about figuring out different perspectives of what has been happening around the world, it's making sense of history and uprooting secrets by meeting others and figuring out how they lived.

@jinkun2629 Жыл бұрын
The saddest thing with the Marines is that even when they realize all the horrors of the World Government, they can't do anything. They know better than anyone that they can't work on goodwill alone. The Navy needs an absurd amount of money to feed the millions of soldiers scattered around the world, on top of paying for their salaries and buying weapons and ships. All of this just to fight pirates. Only the World Government can provide them with that much money, which further adds to how dystopic this all is. If the Marines decided to rebel, I don't think they'd be able to sustain themselves for even two months. Evil pirates will be free to do whatever they want after they collapse. And even if they successfuly overthrow the World Government, the world would then be run by the military. Which doesn't sound idealistic either.
@lorddarkrai5753 Жыл бұрын
Well not really , a team of Sengoku , Garp , Kizaru , Aokiji , Akainu and Ryokugyu would be enough to annihilate all of piracy. Oda knows this , so he would always keep all of the powerful Marines not in the same room + One Piece is necessary for the World Government to fall so there's that.Say the Marines do indeed find One Piece in the end and take down the Government , then all the countries run elections good leaders rise up and end of story , that's the mist pertect scenario indeed , but Oda cannot butcher his main character like that so , yeah.

@@HyakuJuu01300 The World Government are indeed an evil faction, but we can separate the concept of evil and their intentions behind such evil that they commit. An example of a villain in governmental power that is also evil would be Funny Valentine: Valentine is a character who would do whatever it takes for the sake of his nation, an unparalleled level of patriosm and duty towards America, regardless of the atrocities he commits for the sake of the country. This is furthered by how absolutely evil his actions are at times, but are shown in a light of purity from Valentine's perspective. The World Government very well might have similar concepts as such, because have you ever wondered why they're so adamant in maintaining this regime and control for centuries upon centuries? Or why exactly they must keep Imu a secret from the world while he/she reigns from the top? There's obviously answers, motivations, ideologies that are yet to be told, the main key point being perspective. One thing that I think doesn’t get talked enough is the fact that everything the WG touches turns to extremes. Most every character that has had a bad run-in, or has suffered, has become radicalised in one way or another. Some examples (which I’ve compared with real-life political positions): After being captured and tortured, by those he perceived were weaker, Kaido developed the philosophy of “might is right”, leading him to gradually become a brutal leader, throttling Wano with a peculiar death-worship fascism, worse than what he had been through. Dragon, after serving as a marine, and after Garp’s treatment of him, became ever more radicalised to create his army and revolt, being driven towards his own guiding philosophy of something that seems like a weird anarcho-socia-republicanism (that doesn’t make sense but it’s the only way I can describe him) Teach (who I bet has had a dark past with WG) only grew more maddened and extreme after being under them, becoming a bloodthirsty fanatic who would sit somewhere to the bottom right of ancap. And, finally, all the admirals are extremists (with the exception of Fujitora) in one way or another- Kizaru’s sadistic tendencies to “play” cruelly with his foes, Sakazuki’s brutal, barbaric way of dealing “justice”, Ryokugyu’s whole philosophy… all are bred from serving under the fascistic absolute monarchy of the WG. The system breeds more sick and twisted systems, and never leaves any room for the people to realise their plight and band together-they’re too busy being crushed by the next anarchic killer/ ruthless regime. It is the ultimate paradox- a power that rules the world, leaves no way to bring the world together.

The only things i will interject it's that Kaido's Wano isn't a fascist society nor with the beliefs of one. @@fogareuaquelecaradaportari3386 Ah, thank you. Correction: Orochi is closer to a textbook fascist leader. Kaido is, yes, social Darwinist. However, I would say we do see both of those ideologies imposed brutally on Wano, making it slightly muddier to see unless you separate the two.

@jimihendrix23456 Жыл бұрын
Main characters can absolutely be the bad guy, and their opposition the good guy. Luffy, despite clearly being a kind person, helped a major villain in Crocodile escape from prison, and though not on purpose, gave Blackbeard exactly the chance he needed to break out even more deranged inmates. For his actions in the Summit War saga, he bears a good share (though definitely not the majority) of the responsibility for this new dark age of piracy. The people have good reason to see him as a total monster, even if it's not true. Of course the Government is blatantly evil, I wouldn't dispute that. But that's the beauty of One Piece. We get to see the darkness that is covered up and hidden, while at the same time understanding the public's viewpoint and why they would trust the Government so readily. But this saga is definitely going to turn that on its head.

What is even crazier is how BELIEVABLE this world is. Oda and his crew clearly are seeing the times, and putting them into an epic storytelling journey!

The 4th kind, the best one, is where the characters and the reader/watcher are enticed into embracing dystopia eg: Starship troopers film. Would you like to know more?

Oda was simply inspired by the real world to write One Piece

While I know that people have gone overboard with this term, the world government of one piece reminds me of my childhood and how my own family system worked. My mother playing the same role and metaphorically using the same type of games. Like changing history and selling a certain rhetoric that was to be upheld by everyone at all times if they wanted to be allowed to live in peace. It's sad.

This really does apply well to modern governments as well

My favourite aspect of One Piece's politics is that it shows how the government isn't different from the pirates. Doffy: "Whoever prevails is Justice". Justice is defined by the ones in power, the only difference between the Yonko (who control territory) and the world government is that the government calls itslef so and builds a narrative of justice.

To very loosely paraphrase Dr. Viktor Frankl: the one thing you cant take away from me is how I choose to respond to what you do to me or whats in front of me.

No matter how much society grows we always think of ways to make it dystopic.

If you know about the Tartarian theory, or know about some esoteric knowledge. It's so incredible how one piece it's so similar to our world. Oda is beyond knowledgeable

I think the concept of how all three factions that is the pirates,world govt and the revolutionary army interact with each other is what makes it so interesting.One of these factions alone wont be that impactful on its own

Seeing the images of luffy and Wapol again, I was reminded of yet another way I noticed that Oda foreshadowed the bigger plot of One Piece in those earlier arcs: We now know that Luffy is destinied to 1) Remove the corrupt sovereigns from their ruling place high above the rest of the world, 2) forcefully bring to light the dark truth about the supposed heroes/protectors of the people and the evil things they've been doing underground the whole time, and 3) topple the selfproclaimed gods who enslaved the world and whos natural enemy he is, and ring in a new era with the long awaited Dawn of the World. And what did we see Luffy do to the first 3 major antagonists on the Grand Line? he 1) Catapulted Wapol, a corrupt sovereign, off the top of his own castle, the highest point on the island, removing him entirely from that position, 2) forced Sir Crocodile, a hero of the people to the citizens of Alabaster who saw him as their protector, from underground up to the surface, laying bare his evil deeds and schemes he had planned behind the scenes, and 3) punched a selfproclaimed god whose natural enemy he is right into a giant bell, ringing it and fullfilling a century old promise. I know some aspects of that have been discussed before, especially about skypia, but I don't see as much talk about the crocodile scene and basically none about the meaning behind what he did to Wapol. But to me, Oda already showed us with those three what Luffy will do at the end of the entire manga: remove corrupt leaders from the literal top of the world, unveil the true darkness of the supposed "good guys", and defeated the selfproclaimed gods in a very symbolic way. All three of those only really make sense once you know the world is actually a distopia, and so you don't really notice it early on. But now, looking back at it, I'm pretty sure that wasn't coincidence, but deliberately planned by Oda.

Great analysis. You’ve inspired me to fight back against the dystopian authority (my mom) over domestic issues of great importance (my bedtime).

One Piece is one of the most important stories that humans have ever manifested. It’s actually surreal to sit back and reflect on it, while still having so much left to go.

Kobe is very much like a reader in this sense. He understood luffy's brand of freedom and applies it in a reasonable and realistic way to shape the marines from inside, just like the readers should try to think freely and make the world a better place
