Even though sand can be found in nearly every single country on Earth, the world could soon face a shortage of this crucial, under-appreciated commodity. Sand use around the world has tripled in the last twenty years, according to the UNEP. That's far greater than the rate at which sand is being replenished. Here's what's behind the looming sand crisis.

@@runethorsen8423 my point is that if there is an oncoming shortage or crisis with sand everything from housing to consumer and military hardware will face some kind of upheaval. The point of the video is we use this resource alot more than we possibly realize. But there is a silver lining in all this, there is a new material being researched that could replace silicon in the manufacturing of electronics. There could be alternatives to manufacturing concrete or a similar material. Glass recycling maybe more crucial in keeping it in the supply chain. But alot of things need to be done to even begin alleviating the situation. Don't know about you but I don't want to see my xbox or computer prices going up.

Concrete uses sand only because it is, or was, readily available. You don't need sand to make cement. If sand is becoming precious, switch to using other crushed rock. I buy sand from a mine that crushes quartz, which is another source of sand, but eventually that source will end. I also use crushed limestone. I use both to produce the intonaco layer of a fresco. Sometimes I use Carrara marble, which is expensive but produces a cooler color. Marble sand is a by-product of mining marble blocks. Some people call it marmolina, but I see marmolina as marble dust, not sand. Crushed granite works as does crushed serpentine. Both give cement or lime plaster a different color than silica sand. Sand beaches are not overly common. As a youngster I did research along many beaches. Some were made from crushed coral while others from black basalt. Crushed coral makes good concrete but is not encouraged to avoid destruction of precious reefs. Talk to the people in Nago, Okinawa to learn what is going on in Aura Bay.

I agree Polymath. How do you put 10 tons of sand into 1 ton of concrete. Although if you didn't notice the guy says "sand and gravel" really quickly after that quote is taken down but again how do you put 10 tons of anything into 1 ton of anything. I'll have to go back and read the exact quote again did it say concrete or cement? If they said cement then I'll have to research the exact process but making cement, which is an ingredient in concrete, involves heating ...well here it is straight from the Portland Cement Mnf Assc: "The most common way to manufacture portland cement is through a dry method. The first step is to quarry the principal raw materials, mainly limestone, clay, and other materials." Further reading on same site revealed this "Common materials used to manufacture cement include limestone, shells, and chalk or marl combined with shale, clay, slate, blast furnace slag, silica sand, and iron ore." So OK its used in the cement making as well, although listed almost dead last in the materials needed. That then is heated up to 2700 degrees C. Still I really can't see putting 10 tons into an oven with all the other materials and ending up with less then 1 ton of finished product. I for one am shocked and surprised...I mean a news agency exaggerating or out right lying to get more views??? Who woulda figured!!! LOL

As mentioned in the video the sand created by water in the riverbeds and seasides are more suitable for construction because their corners lock to each other more easily. But we have a lot of sand in deserts which are threatening the cities by moving into them with wind so we should use this type of sand in the desert for making glass and poly silicate which is used to manufacture solar panels. Hopefully if we use enough of the sand in the deserts we can also stop the process of desertification and disappearence of fertile lands and villages around the deserts too.
