Man same that entire game is perfectly engrained in my head. The A wing and y wing were always my favorites. Also loved using the airspeeder for some reason. It's too bad that the v wing is no longer cannon I loved playing the last mission as wedge with all the v wings

Not to mention the Y-wing has a surprisingly razor-thin profile if you try to attack it from any other angle than the top or bottom. For a relatively sturdy and durable craft, it isn't very bulky and if you get too close to better your hit chance, there's a good chance of those massive engines coming off to smash you in the face. The DOS TIE Fighter vets, can testify to that I'm sure.

B wing is faster, has more firepower and is better shielded than a Y wing, only thing Y wing has going for it is the turret, which a B wing should have had on the rear of the cockpit. Also a B wing could carry bombs on it's hardpoints.

I think the B-Wing is perhaps best compared to something like an A-10, more focused on standoff attacks of ground targets with its cannons and missile payload instead of gravity bombing targets. Also, the combination of zero-G space combat and ultra-high-altitude flight makes the typical concerns of a forward attacking bomber less of an issue.

I think the shields are similar (the B might have a slight advantage) but the Y-wing is tougher overall. 'Also a B wing could carry bombs on it's hardpoints.' - The Y-wing carries either torpedoes or bombs, and more than an X-wing, though not quite so many as a B-wing. The Y-wing is also a little smaller, I think. Most of the old references had the Y-wing being about as fast as an X-wing, though less maneuverable.

Not really, the B wing is ungainly, it's weapons are hugely off centerline and it has a massive cross section that maximizes target size for pursuit craft or defences on a target vessel. It's practically begging to be shot down and ensuring that it won't hit anything until it's right on top of its target. The Y wing really needs to get rid of the two engine design since even a glancing hit on an engine or momentary loss of power guarantees you're going to spin like a top thanks to uneven thrust.

At least in the games I vastly preferred to use a B-Wing over a Y-Wing. And removing the dual engine design would end up in having something different than an Y-Wing - The shape gave the name.

It actually reminded me of the SBD Dauntless used by US Navy in WWII. Pretty much deemed obsoleted by the time the war started, but soon proven to be very efficient. It's simple to fly and simple to maintain. The best part is that, while not really a fighter, it can hold its own in a fight quite well....so well it got aerial kill ratio of around 3:1.

Tim Bartsch what attack? There was an unfortunate fire and due to insufficient fire safety equipment and procedures on the part of the Jedi a great loss of life happened to the residents. Any troops entering the building were simply there to rescue any survivors but tragically there were none.

In Battlefront 2 (new one) Y-Wings are devastating if you have a good pilot. Ion turrets slow and weaken the enemy, then the guns shred them!

yes ı killed maybe 1000 enemy with that. but most players using ePic health card or droid rpeair card instead of those using more damage cards on bomb and nomral fire andion turrets more active time card. then you got superior verson of ywing. in head to head even millenium falcon barerly kill you. but game need bigger targets for that setups need at least 4 5 star destroyer map. there is battle of endor mod which makes bots 50vs50 adds star destroyers many you cant try ywing on best there but star destroyers not damegable still. lack of new era bomber class makes realy hard first order star destroyer objective map.

Matthew Arnold Apparently it took 20 RA credits to equal 1 imperial credit. How did they come up with that ratio? The imperial economy was a thousand times that of the RA. What was RA currency backed by; ores or gemstones. The y-wings was used to capture ships carrying imperial taxes collected from member worlds but how was it distributed. I hope someone writes a legends book dedicated to how the RA was run. I don’t care if it’s fanmade.

Let’s see: good shielding, decent lasers, can be equipped with torpedoes instead of bombs which makes them slightly faster (which is why they weren’t practically crawling down the trench), and have ion cannons. These things are the workforce of the rebellion

I've always loved the y-wing ever since I was a kid and saw the first Star Wars movie I've always considered it to be something of a perfect version of a Strike Fighter as we now say or what used to be called fighter-bomber certainly a full-fledged bomber will be better and a full-fledged fighter would be as well but the b-wing just doesn't seem like it can do the job of a bomber particularly good and the y-wing seems like it does a better job is a bomber to me and it can function as a second line fighter that to me makes it a perfect fighter bomber

Khaden Allast It can be assumed the refueling is done off screen, since it’s not really an interesting scene. As for it’s capabilities. At sub-light it’s gonna be slower than a purpose built strike bomber, not by much but every little bit counts. You can’t actually shrink the target profile because that’s a result of the base frame of the ship, you’d have to completely redesign it for the purpose. And as for it’s laser cannons, they are a good feature, but for it’s size, it needs both of its primary weapon mounts to be dedicated to point defense weapons like those. The YT-1400 just doesn’t have the hard points for decent anti-capital ship weapons. Not to mention the falcon was much older than the Y-Wing. YT-1400s were way out of production in favor of newer models. So keeping parts in stock would be a nightmare, not to mention that every exisiting YT-1400 was modified to the point that there wasn’t a “standard” 1400 in existence anymore.

Ya gotta remember the Falcon is a HEAVILY modified ship, exactly why the most of the YT series were so popular. Personally I'd go with a YT 2000 as it's got a smallet cross section and comes better armed, shielded, etc than normal. And the Falcon's anti capital ship weapons are it's missiles. Modified light stock freighters such as a YT 1300 make decent misslie/ gunboats. Those quad laser cannons are pretty much ideal for anti starfighter/bomber duty. Personally if I had to pick a bomber I'd go with a K wing or a B wing.

Thanks for giving Y Wings the love they deserve. Sure, they weren't the snazzy Xwing, but they pulled many times their weight by the sheer volume of their duties and length of service. Some Legends lore states that the Rebellion at one point had twice to three times as many Y's than X's. I've always love the Y like people love the A-10 warthog. She ain't pretty, but those shields will often be enough to get you home and she's got a good pair of teeth on her!

Load up the Y-Wing with anti fighter ordinance like concussion missiles and it's a very nasty fighter killer… Jumps in, fires at enemy snub fighters (and maybe gunships/corvettes), taking out a number of them before they can get into laser cannon range. Then once all the missiles are used either jump out or support the other attackers. It would be great for quickly eliminating a screening force or fighter escort wing. The only restriction is having a faction with a ready supply of concussion missiles or similar ordinance. It would almost be like transitioning from 1940's style dogfighting to more modern jet fighters with beyond visual range missile duels. In fact a viable tactic would be a mixed force of Y-Wings, some carrying missiles to clear the path and some bombs/torpedoes for the main target. And the enemy doesn't know which is which till they fire. Or even a split load on each.

You should definitely check out the "Longprobe" variant of the Y-wing. It was an extremely long range reconnaissance/bomber variant that sacrificed the gunner for increased range and radar equipment. I think it's a neat take on the traditional Y-wing.

#AskEck Seeing as it's Canon (partly) through Star Wars: Commander, is it possible that the Galactic Empire's Project: Blackwing had a secret objective of unlocking immortality (possibly based on one of Plagueis's attempts) and used by Palpatine around the time of the Battle of Endor? I love the y-wing. Reminds me of an old, reliable classic car. The y wing was the workhorse of warfare. Wasn't flashy, wasn't fast. Great video Eck. I don't understand why the Y wing wasn't that popular. It was a well built ship, tough, cheap to maintain, easy to fix, but provided firepower in excess. It is the De Havilland Mosquito of the Star Wars universe. The Mosquito was a masterpiece of British engineering. Envied by the Germans for its superb design, effectiveness and low resource cost, loved by the RAF's pilots for its performance and engineers for its ease of repair. All this applies too to the Y wing.

the only reason the B Wing was so bad was because its main weapon was stripped out in favor of being able to use the hyperdrive. Y wings were pretty much death traps by the time of the Galactic Civil War, the lack of armor plating the loss of a secondary Gunner seat which would have come in real Handy at the Battle of Yavin because at least the bombers would have been able to fire back, at vader.

It was all stripped for speed. The Y-Wing was already slow. With all that crap mounted on it would have made them useless in large scale battles with all those ties around And seriously affect its abilities for hit and run attacks. Perhaps they could have retrofitted the turrets back for that specific assault. But with the deathstar looming in the sky. They had no time to lose with that. Speed was the right call. Even more so with the introduction of tie-interceptors that could ruin their shields in seconds. The trench fight is a VERY situational thing.

Yes geetslys yes! Thank you so much for making this vid. I think the Y-wing could use a little love now and then. I mean, it's still around after all those years in the resistance v. first order era(confirmed by new trailer), and you just don't get that kind of long lasting ability in starfighters or really anything anymore. I've said it before and I'll say it again: the clone's ship designers were practical and in that way brilliant.

Excellent video on the Y wing, but I have a theory on what happened in the Emperor. Before he got chucked over the railing, he was trying to hit Vader with Force lightning, which meant he himself was taking a lot of that electricity. Whether it was that or Vader picking him up, the Emperor seemed to be in a lot of pain at that moment. It seems likely that the distraction caused by this was what prevented him from saving himself.

The y-wing is probably my favourite star fighter it has a great targetting system it is super durable, it's versatile and cheap, hyperspace capable and i love the design, it just looks so cool to me

It actually reminded me of the US Navy SBD Dauntless and AD-4 Skyraider. They're both considered obsoleted by the time they shrine the most, but the fact that they are ridiculously effective at their job and very simple to maintain keep them in service. Also, both of them aren't totally defenseless against fighter either, where the SBD Dauntless even achieve kill ratio above 1:1....yes, a frigging dive bomber somehow have better kill ratio than some fighters.

Always assumed the reason the emperor never reacted to falling down was due to the quick and unexpected way he got thrown down the shaft. He probably didnt see it coming and kind of was "processing" this treason thus making him unable to focus on the force.

Many factions liked the Y-Wing! For example, StarForge-Station, the shadowport on an asteroid (which was capable to use a hyperdrive to change location!) had a complement of a few hundred Y-Wings for selfdefense! Pirrates, Mercs, planetary militias, all loved the Y-Wing ;)!

During the game Xwing Alliance the first rebel training mission was with a Ywing. I don't know if that was a standard pattern, but it might make sense to test out and train rookie pilots with a fighter that is as basic as possible. Because the Alliance might not have been able to afford lengthy training and would have to press rookies into battle as quickly possible, training them on the job and hope at least some of them survive long enough to progress.

I personally like how in TCW (I don't remember if they were in the prequels) they still had all the panels that covered the back and engines, but during the OT and all the tie ins they lose them, almost like they were just stripped down models and remnants of the republic being use by the rebellion. *I m m e r s i v e*

The Y-wing is one of the best ships, though I'd swap the ions to the front, and the laser cannons to the turret in most cases. There's a lot of room for improvement, sure; but it's one of the best designs for what it does.

Y-Wings are my favorite Star Wars fighter. It aint pretty, it aint fast, but I love their reliability, toughness and the battered appearance of them. X-Wings gets all the public adoration but the Y=Wings are the ones keeping the Alliance together.

@@mrheroprimes There's also the fact that the Y-wing itself is a modular, box-like craft. The engines could be upgraded or replaced with relative ease, and there are various parts of the craft where you could attach some kind of external add-on without completely redesigning the craft or hurting its structural integrity. For example, one could theoretically add cannons or torpedo launchers to the sides of the cockpit, followed by storage containers for additional fuel or missiles along the sides of the neck.

Another advantage for the Y-Wing is that, IIRC, the turret could also be controlled by the astromech droid (dunno if that was in general or only for some models). And having an astromech droid in general, as with the X-Wing, helped ease operation with the pilot whereas the B-Wing required even more skill both for being able to fly it in general and because of it lacking astromech droid assistance.

The main reason why the Y-Wing fell out of use is three fold. 1. The introduction of the TIE Interceptor near the end of Imperial Era. 2. The introduction of the A-Wing as a response to the TIE Interceptor 3. The replacement of the TIE Bomber & the move to the TIE Defender. The first was able to easily outmanuever it, the second was intended to supplant it, & the third effectively outgunned it in every way. Once those three factors combined, the death of the Y-Wing as an effective starfighter was inevitable.

@@jedhaney3547 that's goes for any bomber. That's why the StarFortress get ripped apart. Not enough to make a good defensive formation, and their escort wasn’t all that effective.

I think the B-Wing is still more my kind of ship. It may not have the maneuverability to dogfight well, but has a ton of foward firepower, meaning the enemy likely won't be around to dogfight after that initial head-on pass. IDK, still really want to buy the old XWing games and try flying these craft in a more sim-like game (as opposed to the very good, but arcade oriented Rogue Squadron series). The speed, maneuverability, and strength of Star Wars ships vary so much by source.

...Always loved the Y-Wing--especially since it was such a stable firing platform. In an RPG many years ago, I modified one by replacing its normal engines with 'Event Horizon' engines off of an A-Wing: with such an extra reserve of power, I tore through everything in sight (& still cheaper than a B-Wing). ;)

The Y-wing is basically the AK47 of starfighters. It may be on the heavy side and not the outright best option for a particular role, but it's sturdy, reliable, readily available and inexpensive. For a resistance / guerrilla force, that makes it a very good option.

I've always been a fan of the Y wing. The X wing is a dedicated long range fighter with some bombing/attacking capability and is really good and plays an essential role in the rebellion but there's a reason militaries don't only have one plane type. The Y wing is a long range fighter bomber which is perfect for the rebellions goals. Send a squadron of Y wings to strike some imperial outpost or shipyards or any target you can think of. The Y wing can fly in, blow lots of stuff up, and get out really quickly, and if they end up in a furball they can fight their way out of it. You could use an X wing but it would do a worse job and take it from the roles it's better at like protecting the rebel fleet and escorting other ships on missions

Because Koensayr Manufacturing does everything with kitbashing. Take any, literally ANY part of Y-wing and you will notice that that part also were used somewhere in civilian shuttle, freighter or else. You can take spare parts from market, add some hull plating - and you have yourself Toscan 8-Q.

B wing can hold its own with fighter; expanded universe had one dispatch three ties in rapid succession during battle of endor, and also cleared out entire enemy wings
