I enjoyed the interview and the comments. I would like Silva to talk about the role of dopamine in his conclusion that sex can't be addictive

Saying people are sex addicts is just christian guilt. America doesn't have a sex addiction problem, it has an opiates problem.

Sex addiction does escalate. Most addicts start with magazines or soft core porn, (this gives them a dopamine boost but as time goes by they increase to less mainstream and more kinky pornography, then to live chat videos, then to actual encounters, then those behavior become more risky, (unprotected sex, multiple partners). That magazine that they looked at 10 years ago just doesn’t give them the same dopamine hit (this is tolerance and escalation)! I appreciate the video by respectfully disagree with you.

@@Hwi0227 define legal. There are countries where 8 years old is legal. All kinds of problems with that. Addiction isn't about what's wrong. It's about increases in activity. I can confirm that after a while achieving orgasm and orgasm itself is less and less fulfilling. In fact after the 3rd, it almost hurts but you continue when addiction.

It is obvious this guy has not “looked at the evidence” anything that increases the levels of dopamine in the body can become addicting. It is the the increase in dopamine someone becomes addicted to. Gambling is an addiction for some… why wouldn’t sex be. Tell me which is more pleasurable winning at a game of cards or having an organism? One we freely admit is an addiction and the other was removed from the DSM5 it’s bullish!t

Because the brain does not have the same changes in the brain. Addiction is not recognized by most sexologists because the research just doesn't support it. Even providers who subscribe to this belief have a hard time comparing it 1:1 to substance use and many unfortunately define sex addiction by pathologizing normal sexual desires, preferences, and behaviors. You're absolutely right dopamine creates habitual behavior, and this provider describes that adequately...compulsion. Laymen use "addiction" far more liberally than the medical community because laymen don't have the standards, knowledge of the tools needed, and research most academics and providers do. IS that bad? No. However, compulsive, maladaptive behavior that is out of control is a problem. Research does show that people who define themselves as sex addicts have worse treatment outcomes even from providers who embrace a sex therapy model. The research show sex addicts risk subscribing to a model that reinforces the belief they can never control their behavior, that their behaviors count less due to it being something they "can't help", and an avoidance of treating depressive and other symptoms due to a hyper focus on the behavior.

Recovering addict here. Agreed. I was driven by the dopamine high of chasing and closing women. Having sex, impulsive behaviour, public places, all stimulated high dopamine.

If you can’t go 30 days without doing something, it’s an addiction. Sex and porn are addictive, it’s simple. It seems he just wants to be perceived as smart because of his different point of view.

@9:36 absolute garbage. I myself in past and many many others have had difficult orgasms, even painful ones. Pornstars and others have come forward explain that their orgasm decreases a lot in pleasure and it is even objective in measurement of brain activity in sex addiction patients. It may be true that many compulsive people are not addicted but that's not to say it is impossible. As a counter example those with sex addiction climb in total amount of time, total amount of objective stimulation (pressure, area, and speed) and exposure to visual or physical material ( taboo visual to increase feeling through adrenaline, and also increase number of participants, or younger or more taboo actual sex) Saying there is no evidence is ridiculous. The evidence is difficult to research inherently since people keep private and the more taboo and problematic a person's problem is, the more reclusive they are bit that doesn't mean it isn't happening. People coming off sex addiction confirm that their orgasm is greatly enhanced, if they have a partnership they feel much closer to them afterwards than when they were addicted, etc.

Science or not doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. When you live with someone who is addicted you tell me it isn’t real.

Your concerned and sad tone when acknowledging the speaker comes across as insincere and condescending. “Yeah 😞” “mmhmm 😔” It's very hard to listen to this because the conversation is not a therapy session. When you speak your tone is normal but it’s the little acknowledgements that get under my skin because it sounds like you’re acknowledging someone who’s opening up when that’s not the case. Just sharing some feedback because I would subscribe but it’s the first time I come across this type of interview style.
