Here's the point that I think we missed making. 1. There is room for smaller volume vehicles now. I don't know that 10 years ago I could have said this with such confidence. But today, we have better information. Most of the 2- and 4-wheeler brands are sitting with under 5 per cent market share. Many sit with less one per cent. That's nuts. It means that the volume market won't come around to their product unless something exceptional happens. This is a conclusion with some time-history now. Which means you need a different strategy. If the mass-chase doesn't work, they must target niches with smaller volumes and larger profits. It's inevitable. Remember that 10,000 people is 0.56% of 1.8 billion. There are motorcycle brands that sell less than this annually and make working business cases to their bosses for a business that small. 2. You cannot break the market leader's hegemony with products that compete directly. This *cannot* be done. It never works. There are entire books as well as important chapters in seminal books dedicated to this idea. You can't beat Maruti by making a better Maruti than them! You _have_ to make something different! It took an Activa to challenge the Splendor. None of the 100cc machines, between 1984 and now (38 years!) did anything significant! Thanks @SagnikGhose for making me think further on this.

Well said, Shumi, this makes the problem clearer. The only fly in the ointment, so to speak, is (and I am putting on a VC Fund/ Angel/ investment bank hat now), that this is not a scalable proposition. Is this a great business idea which can make good money and generate healthy profits? Sure. But can this go for x to 100x in 5 years? Unlikely. Therefore, is this something that a VC/ large investment bank would like to pump in money into? Possibly not, because unless they can see at least a 5 ~ 6X return at the end of 8 ~ 10 years, there is no way they would risk their money into building this ecosystem. Therein lies the rub. Without substantial capital and the ability to sustain consistent and substantial losses for at least half a decade, which is possibly the length of time we would need to drive a habit change, this ecosystem cannot be built. Here's live proof. These are Ather numbers between 2019 to now. And they will be able to sustain this till economies of scale kick in. Year Revenue (In crores) Profits/Loss (In crores) FY 2019 Increase 11.7 Decrease -107.5 FY 2020 Increase 48.8 Decrease -219.9 FY 2021 Increase 79.8 Decrease -233.2 FY 2022 Increase 408.5 Decrease -344.1 While you and Karthikeya were looking at it customer backward, I was looking at the problem statement business/ investment backward, and that is probably why our sentiments differed. Thank you for putting the word out there anyway. Even if one manufacturer hears the resounding sounds of all these enthusiasts (including me) and brings in an exciting product, economies be damned, its a small battle won! Sagnik

@@sagnikghose I disagree at the very start. Everything doesn't need to scale massively to work. It's a dummy we've been sold. Almost nothing *needs* to be 100x in 5 years. This is why our expectations, the products we buy and how we consume things, including content, is in disarray.
@sagnikghose
@sagnikghose Жыл бұрын
Of course it doesn't, Shumi, but without the promise of it being scalable, VCs won't fund it, because it is not an exciting enough for them, because ROI won't justify the size of the check. But the automobile sector needs massive investments, which is where traditional bank loans won't work, so you would need someone with that sort of financial might to fuel the beginning and growth. It's a vicious cycle, Shumi. :(

@@sagnikghose Just give it time. The scalable-100x growth model has a fundamental flaw. It’ll fail and then we’ll relearn that enough is more important, more sustainable and more satisfying than more.

@@shu_mar Of course it has a flaw, which is why it has failed in multiple occasions, 1920, 1982, 1991, 2008, WeWork, FTX, all of it is tied down to the same flaw that you refer to. The funding winter now, and billions being wiped off valuations is tied in to the same flaw. But I have given up hope because we never seem to learn. People talk about CAC to LTV ratio all the time, and yet, it all gets chucked out of the window when the promise of unlimited returns loosens the purse-strings. It's hopeless is what it is.

I bought FZ16 with my first salary, first thing. No donation to any temple, no pledges honored to any cousins, no bank fds, rds started nothing, nada. All of my first salary went into FZ16. Ironically by the end of the month, I already was asking for money from my peers coz I had filled my baby tank up with whatever change was left in my newly incorporated salary account...... Have been waiting for 15 years since to have the same feeling with a Yamaha. May be 16th year is going to be lucky just like my Fz16, which by the way runs exactly how I took it out from the showroom 15 years back and still making memories with it on along with my daily office commutes. Love you guys for bringing out my plight in the open. I feel "naked" now ( all the pun intended 😊)

Small fact about Yamaha in Japan. Their employees are not allowed to drive any bike that is not a Yamaha into their office. I have a friend who works there so this is true. Also, being an ex-Mahindra RnD employee, I'm happy to hear the compliment. @@shu_mar Japanese automakers are waiting for clarity from India's policymakers about the ICE v/s EV playing field they have created. Indians don't know Greta Thunberg', so they buy more Honda Activas in a month than all EV brands can push out in a year. It will take a Tesla or BYD 2-wheeler to change that. Because these brands spend huge sums on R&D, while the leading Indian EV scooter brand hires a dog for clickbait on social media.

- Finally someone bought this topic up. I bought a VW Polo GT (1.2L, DSG) in 2017, while I love every bit of the car, I have always felt a bit short changed. The international spec Polo GT came with a 1.4L TSI engine and a 2 door version, better brakes, better quality interiors (soft touch dash). For two wheels, I always hoped for something from Yamaha. I always thought the Tracer 700 would be perfect for India, but with Yamaha making FZ with less power every generation it showcases their conservative approach. Kudos to RE and specially Sid Lal for turning around the company and are really making bikes which people can enjoy. Loved the podcast.

There is so much to unfold in this topic and podcast. Having been in three roles so far in life - first as a motoring journalist, second as PR guy with an automotive company and third as an enthusiast, I have my own views which are pretty aligned to what you say. I can relate, once again, to so many stories here. I was also there for the CBR250 ride at Bira. I came back and booked that motorcycle off immediately. Had the first one in Pune back then and loved her. I also reconsidered getting her back now from the guy whom I sold her to. Coming back to the sexy cars and bikes that we don’t have access to - well, mostly it’s because of two reasons (from my understanding I developed while working inside an automotive company): 1. The pain of setting up the whole ecosystem. It’s not only about the car or bike, but it’s also about its spares, technicians to handle them and having a network across the (vast) country that we live in. 2. The tax structure and ease of doing business in India is not the best, to say the least. This means that the headache to make this happen over the benefits in P&L doesn’t work out. And as far as brands like Ducati who manage to bring their entire range as against those can’t, the difference is that the halo products is all that Ducati has. That’s their bread and butter. Unlike a Honda. Ducati can do that because all their resources are focused only on these machines while for others that’s not the case. Finally, also a word of appreciation for Ducati (without sounding like I am being paid for this), is that they have people with their heart at the right place. I remember riding with Francesco (I hope I remember the name right) in Rajasthan. He is their global head of sales. And he was pulling wheelies all around. These are the guys who can make sale happen! So is the case with their Indian team starting from MD to Comms to Service network. Everyone is an enthusiast!

Excellent discussion guys! I think the way the Honda (2W) is operating in India is analogous to how Fiat operated, before it left India. Fiat was more interested in selling their diesel engine (1.3 MJD) to other manufacturers (Maruti, Tata, Chevy etc) and didn’t pay much heed to their own capable products - Punto/Linea which eventually led to their demise. After Fiat’s departure, FCA is still doing the same. Selling their 2.0 MJD to Tata/MG and trying to survive on just one car - Jeep Compass. Honda is focusing more on the likes of Activa with no real intention in selling their more powerful bikes. Either they don’t offer them, or offer them at eye shattering prices! So much for their ‘don’t fix it, if it ain’t broke’ strategy.

I remember seeing R15 for the first time and thinking to myself 'man, what a weird looking motorcycle with a cycle tyre'. I had made up my mind it's a crappy motorcycle and I was never more wrong in my life till date. Yamaha had made a perfect track tool and there was nothing like it in the Indian market than. They showed a 150CC bike could out perform all the other motorcycles in the market in terms of everything. It was an instant love as soon as I test rode. It was my motorcycle that introduced me to the track and a couple of pan India tours on it. It paved the way for KTM in India. I feel heartbroken that Yamaha is still milking the last drop out of that engine with refreshed stickers now. Where are we now? V4? they had such nice apportunity to climb up the bigger CC ladder and they just concentrated on scooters. They forgot their true loyal customers. At least put that 150 mill into an off-road chassis and you'll have a successful motorcycle again. It deeply saddens me that a company like Yamaha is literally committing suicide in front of our eyes. Also, despite knowing T7 potential all over the world, instead of increasing their production capacity they decide to slap a new updated price sticker on it every now and then. What a tragedy. A tale for our grand kids 💔

Yamaha YZF R3 Coming to the bikes I would definitely put my money on (3-5 years time): 1. Yamaha MT 07 2. Tenere 3. Kawasaki KLR 650 These ones come to mind. But I have something to add, I did a shoot for Benelli once and got a chance to talk with someone higher up in the organizational structure (Aadishwar). I enquired why are we not getting the mainstream benellis that are available globally, he explained that the same model that sells outside has to be tweaked for India to get certified here. And most brands don't want their bikes to be tweaked a certain way JUST to pass certification. (Or they won't bother making the changes). He also said that there is a lot of beurocracy in India as compared to anywhere else in the world, which gets in the way of them launching a product like that. Anyway, thanks for the podcast. The Yamaha R3 is one motorcycle I would’ve definitely gone ahead and purchased if they were selling it at the dealers. The point you guys mage about Yamaha is spot on. They are taking us, the Indian motorists, for granted. Case in point - the MT15. The biggest gripe about the first generation was the steep price and lack of dual channel ABS. And what do they do with the second generation. Slap on a golden-coloured USD and push it off the factory with an even steeper pricing. Hondas too, with their ridiculous pricing strategy for both the 500X and CB300R (I own one), are toeing the same line. P.S. - Nice to see the ‘daylight mode’ on the podcast. As for the topic of discussion, its not just limited to the automotive sector, we’ve been shafted elsewhere as well. I disagree with people that say we are a difficult market. We are a market and we pay. We are “Value” conscious, not just price conscious. People mix it up and take what comes their way. And this is seen in the service meted out at dealerships of luxury brands. I wish Honda would price the AT right, or at least Yamaha brings in the Tenere. The bike I would’ve absolutely bought was the Yamaha R3. I eventually upgraded from my R15 (because Yamaha sacked the R3) to the G310R(which I absolutely love). But god do I miss the R3. Next upgrade would happen in another 2-3 years(middle weights), hoping the manufacturers don’t do what Yamaha did. Another point is not only about the product that we want, that they won’t let us buy, but about the lack of services that comes along with the product on the global market, that we don’t get access to. Like the BMW guys have tons of options when it comes to their bikes, where even the seat height for the F900R had 5 options. But we get only one option. This is just a very small example of how we get the base product and none of the stuff that comes along with it. People who are willing to pay 12L for a 900, won’t be hesitant to pay a little extra for the stuff that would make their riding better.

I recently was in discussion with my manager a few days back regarding the same that buying capacity of Indian Consumers have increased but the brands are not ready to cater the demand and continue to give us products which does not make any sense in terms of their competitions. I totally agree with you guys in terms of Japanese brands not keeping up with the competition. Shumi have correctly summarised that the brands are focused on Transactional buyers/volumes instead of enthusiasts. Loved the content can't have enough of it ☺

This conversation reminds me as a kid i used to cut out car/bike pics from newspapers & magazine’s making a wish list of sorts that i would buy when i had the money. Sadly none of them exist anymore or over the top pricing due to our taxation policies or low sales numbers like you guys talked about. Anyways, My wish list currently are these - Bikes - R3, ZX6R, Daytona 675R, Honda sub 500cc supersport, ........ Cars - Polo, Civic, Abarth Punto, Swift sport, Figo diesel, Cedia, ...... Damn putting this comment made me even frustrated & sadder 😠😤🥺😭

Yamaha FZs is my favourite 150cc commuter I ever brought. When I am saying this already brought, ride and sold in OLX almost 10 bikes and scooter since last 8 years. In 2016 I brought a FZs V2 and sold in 2018. That was the best 150cc bike I ever had so far. I know its not powerful as it looks but the driving dynamics, balance, looks everything is exceptional. Before that I had a pulsar 150 and even brought a Gixxer 155 BS6 in 2021 which is now sold. But nothing compared to FZs in terms of having fun when drive. I will never forget FZs even if I have a Royal Enfield now. When I owned it, it was just a good bike for me but with time and after riding so many 150cc later on I realised why FZs was special.

My answer to the question posed at the end Car: Honda Civic, Tesla Model X, and the Endeavour if Ford comes back to India (slightly shorter list since I'm not much of a car guy yet) Bike: KTM 890 Adventure (or even the 390 Adventure sold outside with the Adjustable Suspension), Kawasaki KLX 250 (I have been imagining some version of this in the Xpulse), and a lot of Yamahas in the Sport and Naked genre that you already mentioned I do have a question however. I had a feeling that Shumi (and Kartikeya to some extent) was more controlled in this video, in terms of expressing true exasperation, compared to what you guys feel. If its not conscious and happening purely because of a habit thing with trying to be more neutral (how most journalism seems to work), then it can be more raw for the audience here at MotorINC, simply because I feel the people here (generalising from my personal perspective) might be more receptive to stronger opinions Keep up the fabulous work. Cheers!

Do they have it easier? We think they don't have a choice. So they're offering a wider range of options to try and make a dent in one of the hardest markets on Earth. So it appears that they can expand their range faster (and they must) but look at the sales numbers and you'll see that their challenge, as a Chinese brand especially, are very large too

The one bike that I’d put my money on if that were available here in India and priced correctly is the Kawasaki’s Zx25R. I was hoping that shumi would mention it at some point in the podcast. Me and my friend on a 600km trip me on dominar and he on a meteor. Both bikes are brand new too. And we both agree the dominar is a hell lot more comfortable on a long ride than the metor and both are priced almost the same. And for me personally, the engine sound, the seats, the general look of the bike all seems right at its price point.

The Dominar is unnecessarily been made heavier so to not cannibalize the sales of KTM's. There is a 20kg weight difference in those bikes like Bajaj can easily cut 10kgs off that Dominar, which would make it much better and still have enough differentiation from KTM.

CB 150R would have been my go to 1st bike, since it most inevitably is a Honda, but since that dream is reserved for the Europeans and Malaysian market, I had to go with the Hunter 350 Metro Dapper. Did some cosmetic changes to give it a scrambler treatment (thrown off the rear fender and saree guard, added a somewhat decent tyre hugger and an X shaped headlight grill) and enjoying every moment of the ride Amen. I am about to be 23 when I am typing this. And guys, these podcasts bring a sweet smile on my face. :) Thanks mate!

So, I would have bought 1. Honda Rebel 300 (priced not like honda big wing) 2. Ford competitor to Creta (loved and had the ecosport) 3. New Gen Renault Duster (Have the first gen one, still driving it, loving it)

I'd beg to differ. The whole vibe of the podcast is just so pure (for the lack of better word in my vocab). I mean its just 2 guys talking about vehicles with a plain background and just the voices (not even music). Its a very unique thing to do. Especially when you have such well phrased person like Shumi and such a enthusiastic guy like Kartik (who are just so well composed throughout), it actually distracts when you have pop-up of vehicles in between. I actually like the podcast because of its very basic (which is a compliment here) and pure approach.

I beg to differ as well. I don't want to 1/ distract you from the conversation at all. 2/ I don't want to have pop-up images of vehicles clogging the screen either. If a certain vehicle piqued your interest, I'd much rather you took the time to find out about it and learnt something than to sit back and absorb information as a passive viewer.

@Rishav Dev: Thank you. It's just two guys talking. And we've been in conversations where people keep pulling their phones out to show each other photos/videos and they're worse for the interruptions for sure.

I don't have a particular bike I wanted to buy, because i have already bought the one i wanted to ride and its slightly disappointing. What i would have loved having? Choice. To choose from an array of good capable bikes. Not but the only one there is in a segment.

@@shu_mar KTM 390 ADV. Although, overall it's a good bike, there will always bevthat one small nagging problem. For the SVC it's a normal thing. You tell them the bike isn't starting it's a common problem. The bike isn't tracking straight, it's a common problem. Nothing is taken seriously untill you complain on the app and even after that they're in a hurry to tell you some BS story and send the bike saying it's been fixed and the moment you sign on their form, it's back to the same cycle. I'm tired of making the SVC runs. Some garages are good but even for them it takes a keen person to actually think that I might have a genuine problem and takes 2 or 3 visits min to fix it. Also the money involved. It goes a little out of budget when you're visiting the garage 2 or 3 times for the same problem and each time you change a different thing and still the problem doesn't get solved.
