The 1176 is probably the most famous compressor/peak limiter of all times. And just as the Pultec has the low end track this device has its own 'lets see what happens if we do this' trick. In this case it's the so called "All mode" or "British mode"
In this video I'll show and tell you what it's all about.
Chapters:
0:00 Intro
0:48 The history and functionality of the UREI 1176
2:18 The "All mode"
2:52 Practical Examples
9:59 Famous users and clones

The 'All' in mode, is THE mode for parallel compression. Slam your signal with a high input and all buttons activated, then mix this in with your dry signal, tucking it just under, to really fill things out. You will retain all of the dynamics and transients of the dry signal, but have things much phatter and fuller, due to the slammed parallel compressed signal, working along side it.

Good video Jonas. I hope that one day make a video where you show how to start in music production, at least basic aspects. I know there are many channels with this topic but you have a philosophy that many of your viewers love.

Well, I got educated to be an audio engineer. After that I still made a lot of bad mixes 😁 Theory vs practice. Nowadays I'm reasonably confident doing mixes but it took quite a while.

Nice! 👍 Thanks. Please don't stop. Well explained and usefull. The historical overview, the examples and finally your personality makes it one of the best I've encountered. And the time format is perfect. Don't change anything! 😁

Great video, awesome!! Maybe next could be Fairchild 670 compressor review/history. Its one of the most expensive hardware units available in second hand market. And there are lots of 670 plugins from IK Multimedia, UAD, Waves... Thanks Jonas! Your videos are very interesting to watch!

I was playing around with Arturia version the other day and thought it sounded good on drums. I had no idea it is modelled on such a historic piece of hardware - noob 😁 I’m really enjoying this format of video, keep em coming 👍

I have the waves and the Arturia 1176. It seems like the waves version adds more harmonics. Both are nice and I have found uses for both versions.

whenever i need an 1176 i just use pro-c and set it as it would be one. come to think of it i use pro-c for every single compression style can really recommend no need for a single other compression plugin what so ever, will save u some money

Cubase's built-in "Vintage" compressor is also modeled after 1176!

Interesting. How accurate is it, though? I use the one on my UAD card, mainly, but the Vintage Compressor in Cubase is great, for zero latency.

It would be cool if you show us some modern classics too. Are there any successful (electronic music) producers that don't use the old classics for example?
@Estuera
@Estuera 2 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that many people do not use the classics. There is lots of modern hardware and software that is amazing. For a video format like this there isn't much to tell about those though.

I could hear the difference between bypass and wet for the drums, but couldn't hear any differences with the vocals. I guess I need to work on my mastering skills.
@Estuera

Try to focus on the dynamic peaks in the vocals when bypassed. You can hear (and see) them being flattened.

I was also just staring at the meters in disbelief. Just couldn't hear a difference between ratios 4 to 20. I've worked really hard on my musical ear over the years. Now that I'm finally doing alright recognizing intervals and harmonies, I'm finding out about all these studio tricks and I'm back to square one. 😣

The youtube audio processing is to blame as well here. They do some compression and limiting themselves which kind of hides the more subtle effects here. Best to try this out yourself using one of the plugins so you can really hear what is happening.

How do you give a history of the 1176 while brushing over the UA 175b/176 ? You also never mention the 1178 Stereo version.. Come on buddy google is easy Now I have to watch your pultec video to see if you messed up on that.
