House of Discs need to spend their money on marketing and branding. They've done nothing but show themselves to be all about money, at least pretend to want to "grow the sport". It seems to me that disc golfers buy the players that they are fans of more than anything else. Simon/MVP could drop a $33 disc and it would sell, no issues because they way they market, you don't feel like they are just trying to bend you over (even if they actually are). No one is going to do that for Trilogy now because everything that made them gain their cult following are gone. They used to have the best presence on social medial, now I'm not even sure I could name another pro outside of Ricky and Kona.. It's funny because around 2019 or so, I thought Innova would be in trouble in 5-10 years because these other companies (MVP, DD, Discmania) were doing such an amazing job of engaging their communities and their trust essentially. Now, they are looking great, keep prices down and bank on volume while these other companies basically price themselves out of the market. It's sad, but I'm glad I have an unhealthy collection of discs as to where I'm not pressed to buy anything at this point.

I wonder if DD really understood the power of their social media presence driving sales. When I started getting more into disc golf, the Disc Golf Answer Man show was still going strong. I loved what Bobby Brown and Robert McCall were doing. I purchased Judges and Truths cause they all loved them. I picked up Felons because Eric Oakley wouldn't stop talking about them. Danny Lindal's Physics of Flight series might still be the best instructional content on KZbin. But when DGAM ended and Danny and Anthony were clearly being pulled in other directions, I didn't sense the same love for the game and for those who played it. Now that most of those folks have left DD, I struggle to really care about DD's line up. I've never been impressed by the pros just because of their ability; I'd much rather listen to an AM with clear communication skills and passion. And I will never be able to crush an anhyzer flex like Ricky, so if he throws it, I don't need it (SBSlammer, General, Enforcer, etc.). Now I throw mostly L64, and I wish I could say it was just because I love the Beetle, Keystone, Fuse, and River (which I do). But if I am honest, a huge part of it is L64's KZbin with Jonathan, Johannes, and Tomas making the game and their discs look fun. I think they also recognize that their main market needs to be AMs. The Royal Line plastic has some incredibly throwable discs that have sold very well (Hope, Savior, Trust, Brave, Strive) while the overstable stuff is still great (Glory, Honor, Rive), it just isn't needed by your average weekend warrior noodle arm and so doesn't move as well.

I started playing in the early 1980s and at that time you bought disc mostly out of the truck of some ones car for around 6.00 and you only had a choice of Innova and Discraft and Lightning. None of which ever cost me more than 6.00 each. When Covid came about I started buying some of the newer discs that had better plastics and love them so much more but 15 00 dollars was my limit on most disc. I will say they are a lot better now but I play a round with my 80s stuff and my newer ones and I gained around 2 to 3 strokes on a round. But hell I am in my 70s now so if I had had them sooner maybe I would have gained 5 strokes.

Welp I mean $6 in 1984 was about $15.50 in 2021 adjusted for inflation and the technology with discs has come very far in 30 years. At least in Europe, the DD prices are very comparable to other brands and most brands (at least Discmania, Prodigy, Innova, Axiom, Clash to name a few) have more expensive discs than the General. I guess from DD's point of view, this is their big new release of the year and a Sockibomb signature model. I'm just surprised that they really haven't been able to create any hype for the disc so that is why the price feels so high.

I personally blame the Covid boom on this kind of price hike. The huge influx of money into the sport gave manufacturers a false sense of security and they overpaid on their contracts. Now that the demand for discs has dropped, they are stuck with contracts they can barely pay. Now they are passing on the burden to consumers by overcharging for a disc.

I think where innova and discraft play it smart is sure they may come out with a disc at $23-25 but the follow it up a few months later with a stock premium plastic version for 15-20 and of course some molds go all the way down to base or a base premium mix. They understand no everyone can drop 25 on a new disc so they try and cash in on the die hards and collectors, then open up to the rest of the consumer base. But as you pointed out this looks like a stock premium disc shouldn’t be over 25 IMO and if they need to sell some higher than make a limited run stamp and plastic mix to make it worth it for the die hards/collectors.

It’s a niche disc that about 1% of disc golfers can throw correctly.

Things like this, scare me about the future of the sport as it becomes more popular more money will be involved before we know it the courses will not be beginner friendly in attempts of making it like what the “pros” play, They will all start to cost money to play, discs will go up as much as they can as long as people will continue to buy them which they will as the popularity grows, and then the more expensive the more that people will take them when they find them instead of returning them to their owner. The community will slowly fall apart. The sport will no longer be about having a genuinely good time with friends. It will no longer be a fun activity to do that doesn’t cost much for people to get into with more popularity. People will start getting greedy and turn it into the most profitable thing they can…

What makes you think disc golf is going to continue to grow? The Covid boom is over and every company is selling way less discs then they did during the pandemic.

The peak is long gone. This is last gasp private equity bullshit. DD will be out of business in three years and Vendis will scavenge the IP that has value.

Yea in Sweden inova halodisc are 35-50$+ If its a tour series disc.

That's a bummer, but not surprising for an imported good. This is a domestic price for a domestic product. Bonkers.

Good luck with that.

The bag you working on looking like a BP-1 copy almost. Might be wrong
@caseysmith5444 ай бұрын
BP-1 from Prodigy is replaced by 2 or 3 version of same bag.

My bag has higher density 600D polyester, more durable straps, and water proofing on the bottom of the bag as well as small quality of life changes. I know the look is similar but the durability is much better (and cheaper)
@HenkeGust874 ай бұрын
@wildrunsdiscgolf durability is key I know prodigy and many disc manufacturers bags got done issues with that.

Interesting perspective about the business side of things. Why is this capitalism thing so great? Unfortunately greed is the undoing of many brands that are bought out by vulture capitalist. For those that want a 33 dollar frisbee more power to them. Honestly house of disc probably isn't stressed about how they're selling in America. 33 dollars might jive with their European market where disc golf is more popular and their people do have more disposable income.
