Serious Question: Are hollowed out trees that common for these guys to evolve specialized claws for climbing out of hollowed out trees, while competing with other species for these same spaces? I'm calling for a hollowed out tree study!

They do prefer to nest in tree cavities🌳 to avoid predators. Side fact: the ducklings already leave their nest cavity within 24 hours of hatching! P.S.: how's your study goin'?

I’ve seen a “short shower of ducklings” from a 14’ wall before. And watched one of my own leap down a 12’ retaining wall to no I’ll effect. They are just so light that they experience no great impact on landing.

Thanks! Our team waited around the nest and there was also one hidden camera inside. Due to the fact that hooded merganser mothers mostly choose the same nest every year, the team could hide the camera before breeding time started.

When they hatch, the ducklings weight very little, which helps: the less you weigh, the less you are hurt by falling. Terminal velocity-the fastest that gravity will make you fall-depends on weight, so small creatures are more likely to be safe from falling from heights.
