The Power Stroke, Cummins, and Duramax Diesels all run the CP4 high pressure pump (in different generations), and when they fail it will cost you anywhere from $9K-$13K to fix. Here is what you need to know.

Here's how I dealt with the CP4 in my Duramax..... I sold it and got a truck with the 6.6L gas engine. Fixed.
@aaronrepsher7628
@aaronrepsher7628 3 жыл бұрын
What's funny he stated there was no preventing this but I'm a GM tech and what works to save and prevent the issue with the CP4s on the LML is a Fleece powerflo lift pump that takes the place of the weak factory dribbler in the tank and uses all GM connectors and you can have the choice of upgrading to bigger lines and another thing you can do a return with all of that setup to do basically what Ford calls "the disaster prevention kit".......Also I find it hard to believe that nobody has done for the 6.7 that they made for the LML Duramax and went ahead and designed a CP3 kit to install in place of that junk CP4...... I know for a fact that these 2 items are Legit and are ALIVE AND WELL lol.....I could've swore that the same place that sells the CP3 kit to install in place of the CP4 for Duramax had a kit for the 6.7?? I'd have to double check that for certain though. Well I'm sorry to hear that your CP4 pump murdered your fuel system and that the 6.7 is going to require a major resurrection!! Well if you want me to check that CP3 retrofit kit where I get the GM items just shoot me a message back and we'll exchange info to communicate. Otherwise good luck my friend and again I'm deeply sorry. Update......looks like Fords nobody is making the pump conversion kit like the LML Duramax which is shit if you atleast wanted to go that route to the tried and true Mr. Reliable CP3 to fill that hole and ditch the CP4 all together. For some reason it looks like that company is making a add on CP3 pump kit for the 6.7 Powerstroked which in turn will do what that Fleece pump does for the 6.6 Duramax and add the pressure out of the hole all together to help the CP4......myself I like to do away with the CP4 all together to eliminate any possibility of the problem occurring again and taking a chance of wiping out the damn fuel system. Personally I think its Bosch way of selling parts fue to the sole fact that after Ford went to the 6.7 and GM went to the LML and beyond they arent eating injectors like previous 6.6 models of duramax and the 6.0 and 6.4 BUT.......You hear the fine engineer gentleman over at Bosch tell it and it's as usual....they dumb stupid Americans fault hahaha....what Bosch blames is our quality of fuel and "STYLE" of fuel stating the sulfur content is what's causing the pumps to take a hahaha........one serious question to Bosch and I rest my case....Bosch, how comes neither of the "big 3" here in the states had any major issues and high failure rates of the CP3??? Fuel was still shit then so you say, Thank you kind sir I rest my case and goodnight!!

You need a disaster prevention kit! It reroutes the fuel so if the pump goes out it doesnt send metal through the whole fuel system. Several different kits out there

This is what happens when you buy the cheapest diesel you can find at your local git-and-go. Always buy diesel from a high volume seller like a truck stop.. Loves, TA, Pilot/ Flying J. Ez Mart is a no no. High mixes of bio diesel is a no no. Any amount of water will destroy your pump, and always use 1 Oz. of hotshot secret in every fill up. Or not. It's your money. Just my suggestion. Been driving diesels for 20+ years, like to think I've learned a thing or 2.

One way to fix it for good is a Cp3 conversion. Cp4’s are known to be dog shit no matter what platform it’s on. That’s why all the duramax guys do cp3 conversions and never worry about it again.

The only way to really fix this problem is to sell the truck and buy a gas version. All HPFP are fragile and could go with a bad fillup. I'm sure you'd rather play roulette in vegas and not on a long family vacation while hauling the camper. I've heard its caused by air forming in the pump when it can't meet fueling needs.

After the Duramax CP4 failures 2011 to 2016 LML engines why would anyone even consider buying a truck that has a CP4. Ford continues to use them and they blame the failures on bad fuel and will not cover it under warranty. CP4 pumps have a mechanical design flaw problem that allows the roller cam follower piston to rotate and start digging metal. Anyone that buys a truck with this pump you should expect this to happen. Ford could care less and will never have my business. How an owner can be okay with this and consider replacing the $3500 pump at 100,000 miles as preventive maintenance is beyond me? IQ test?
@paulmaxwell8851
@paulmaxwell8851 Жыл бұрын
As I understand, Bosch never designed the CP4 pump to handle North American diesel fuel, and automotive engineers who selected the CP4 knew that. They gambled that failures would be infrequent and the aftermath of failures would be highly profitable for the dealerships. A friend's truck suffered a catastrophic failure and the dealer pulled the old "Never seen that before" with a straight face.

In the uk it is usually that the follower turns 90 degrees to the cam so it just wears away the cam and roller, we see a lot but as it’s on the low pressure side of the system if caught early it doesn’t take out the injectors but the whole low pressure side needs to be cleaned

Use good fuel, fuel additive every fill up, drain your water fuel separator, & change your fuel filters every 10,000 miles. I’ve a S&S Bypassed 2011 F250 6.7 with 214,000 miles. Again, It is bypassed, I run certain religiously and give it everything it needs when it needs it. My question is, can I, overhaul my CP4 anticipating that it is getting to the end of its lifespan? I’d rather do that than have it go bad at a remote spot in the backcountry. Actually one thing that can be done is fuel additive, we sell FPPF products, it's the best on the market, the best is total power, it has fuel power for water, cetane improver, lubricity, injector cleaner, should used at every tank fill up, is a preventive measure and will extend the life of the fuel system. I work on all types of diesel fuel systems, rebuild most, the problems that i see is water damage, see the EPA many years ago wanted to remove the sulfer for #2 diesel fuel, which makes the fuel drier, a lot less lubrication, and the process actually add water to fuel, doesn't matter if you can your fuel filters all the time, the water is too small to be caught by the filters. And the Bosch CP4 is a crap pump, Bosch has a ton of more of the CP4 failures compared to CP3 , the design of the CP4 is more the problem than anything.
