El Mirador in northern Guatemala is now believed to be the largest complex by far with over 60,000 structures that covered an area larger than modern day Los Angeles. The Maya didn't disappear. The classic age ended but a bunch of new cities popped up after that. There are 13 million today in southern Mexico and Guatemala. Many don't speak Spanish. Trust me I've been and know some Spanish. It's often useless. Although I do think a very few lost at sea people from the old world washed up on the beaches from time to time of the America's, the fact they had no immunity to diseases that old world got from domesticated animals really shows any real contact or trade didn't happen. If you believe contact was earlier, then you can't believe that few died from old world diseases. I'm a Maya freak. I've been to a bunch of sites. It's pretty clear with what we know now that it was warfare and the breakdown of trade that ended the Maya classic period. How? Seems invaders from the north. Teotihacan, monte alban of the zapotec, palenque, tikal of the maya, all fall or in the zapotecs case abaondoned from north to south in time order. The pottery and names of rulers of maya become northern at the same time. We see many cities building walls and later maya cities often have them. That had never happen before. 1 I forgot the name, is frozen in time. They didn't get there walls built fast enough and when it was sacked and many of the inhabitants killed, nobody went back. It is like Pompeii. These people seem like the huns vs rome. In many cases they just want to sack place more then take over and rule. When the trade network between these cities breaks down, there isn't a reason to restart the cities. Penn academy has a great podcast. We'll it's Penn something I can look it up if your interested.

On my visit to central America I was told the Mayans made concrete cities which necessitated long trips to find food. Because of a shortage of rooms in Punto Gorda in Belize, I ended up at a cacao farm north about 10 minutes, for the weekend, very beautiful and educational. The family was Mayan. It was fortunate for me that the teachers convention took over the town, which I stayed in for a few days after the cacao farm. We hear about European illnesses that were brought to NA, but not about disease Europeans may have suffered from that Indians were immune to.

I grew up in a religious household, but could never understand how folks could judge and hate others so much while claiming to be good Christians. The Bible has so much self righteous murder vs so called mayhem. When I listen to scientific minded people speak I see someone sharing the results of the research and current tested knowledge and understanding of something. When I listen to a preacher, I hear differing interpretations of one collection of old stories. It’s difficult to trust men who tell you how to live your life while not abiding by the book they taught and often committing horrid atrocities against others. So I guess I will continue to read and educate myself with as much information as possible, while evaluating multiple sources on each subject to help me understand the world around us. One idea is that we have all the answers in said book and trust in a celestial being who spoke to a select few of chosen leaders to herd the sheep. The other idea is to continue to educate oneself through experience and through others experience and knowledge. So based on science current understanding of earth and the universe, billions of years. The world of science excepts that information and knowledge of our world can and will change as our intelligence, technology and understanding of it advances. Sorry for being long winded.

In regards to Cortez; his orders were to only observe land from the ships. Other ships from Cuba had already sailed around Yucatan and observed plenty of people as well as a city seen at the edge of a high cliff. The Spaniards new the indigenous Taino people in Cuba had died from diseases they brought because the population dropped from about 200,000 to 20,000. This was the main reason Cortez was not to set foot on land. Unfortunately the gold sent to him as a gift from Tenochtitlan to hopefully make him leave was 600 times the amount extracted from Cuba in the sixteen years since their arrival. What Cortez realized was if this was a gift the gold in Tenochtitlan must be a vastly greater amount. . . He burned the ships!

Great video. I read the entire Journal written by Bernal Diaz, written in 1519. I am a mariner that has spent years working in some of the places he describes 500 years ago and it is amazing how much detail remains the same. I have been to most of the Maya and Aztec sites and I am amazed at their sophisticated building methods. Definitely much more advanced than we have been told. One theory about Tenochtitlan is that Enoch built it.

Yes, the Mayan thing is baffling (so far) because there was astonishing civilizations and as noted we only see some of the great cities and pyramids while many more are still covered in jungle. This requires massive population, skills, wealth and a whole lot of strong planning systems, bureaucracy, govt, etc etc. They don't have a series of ongoing descriptions of a decline or some massive impending invasion or battles (not that kind that just outright ends everything) and all suggests their civilization fizzles out relatively suddenly. Like just collapses and vanishes into the jungles while that remnant sort of refugees away to fade into another era of admixtures. The Foreigner Theory here is a good one that squares with a whole lot of things and maybe more than anything: possibly introducing a foreign disease(s) that just shows up and starts eliminating everyone ASAP. This reminds me of a site we visited in Norther China that 'was' at it's time a fairly significant trade route town but was lost to history. When uncovered, they found literally horse skeletons still tied to posts, a bank with coins still on the table, a town that might have had 2000 people at any given time and abandoned so long that 1000 years of local floods and nature had since buried it in the earth. They said the best explanation is 'the plague' (which was known to have swept around that time) and that is why there are no records. Nothing in the town, no survivors to tell others or write it down and would explain why no looters showed up (even if they survived) because that town would be 'death plague epicenter' and forbidden cursed land, even for scavengers to avoid. "avoid it like the plague' literally. So that does square. Some Mongolian peoples sweeping through the Americas? I don't know but the idea of some foreigners who just showed up 'surprise!' and maybe a combination of surprise attacks, turning it all upside-down AND then massive plagues simply taking everyone out. I've seen some other documentaries that describe a peculiar kind of 'Restart' where it seems like after a time some were back to recreating society. 'Mayan 2' and it was fascinating how they spotted things like pottery was 'trying to be' but was actually being made by a different process. As some wacky comparison, maybe it would be like 500 years from now archeologists find 'kilts' in Scotland but someone realizes that around 1990 the kilts are synthetic materials and definitely trying to be kilts but are also not the same manufacturers or original style sort of thing. Anyway, the whole thing is pretty darn intriguing and I think Jeanson is on some kind of right tracks that make the most sense of the most things so far. Good stuff.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems that the good doc speaks in circles, poses questions, then alludes to possible answers without giving definitives and then proceeds to lead the discussion around in another series of circular reasoning. I could not answer with any certainty as to "who comes from where" based on watching any of these episodes, only to say that tribes and cultures have been intermarrying since the beginning, but apparently it's just guesswork as to which ones, where and when, based on written history and archeology. I would like to hear about what the actual genetics is actually demonstrating, as promised but not delivered. Y chromosomes are mentioned as a means of determining this, but no information actually given as to tracking of the actual Y genetics from one group to another. I guess I just need this all broken down in a more simple format, as in A + B = C

I think it's more complicated than that. He said ethnicity can change quickly depending on outside influence. (My words or takeaway. He says it in terms of being a geneticist.) For example, Europeans are found to have genetics from central Asia, yet they look Caucasian. I suppose the same happens elsewhere, meaning, whatever genetics show up in south, Central, and north America were introduced by invaders. So, while it looks like these people groups disappeared, (on top of that many just died with the introduction of germs and becoming ill), they were instead assimilated and their lifestyle changed (not needing pyramids or human sacrifice anymore, for example ) Again, my takeaway. I'm just an average Joe.

The Aztecs and the Mayan to me were the elite tribes in the Americas in the pre columbian era, they were very different from all the tribes in the surrounding areas, the Aztecs were very discipline, and had set of rules very strict, one of this was that they had plantations of vegetables in which to feed the people and they had one section for travelers if travelers took from the area designated to the Aztecs they would be punished or killed, also stealing was very strictly punished, if any one was caught stealing they were punished by cutting their fingers and even a hand, they impressed the Spaniards as you mentioned and also because the way they did business buying and selling in open air markets were very clean and organized, I believe the Aztecs mostly disappeared and died out, due as you mentioned of the diseases brought by the Spaniards, and also the clashes with the same, and by the killing of the rest by burning for not converting to Christianity that left a very low number of Aztecs, and thus Aztec blood is not the majority in the now Mexico is the other tribes that accompanied and help the Spaniards in directing the Spaniards were they were. 26:49 The Mayan was a scientific and thinking tribe, the reason they bind the head of the babies as to force to grow elongated was one of fashion, and they also believed that would caused the brain to grow bigger, making them smarter.

Pre Toltec / Mayan Civilization stone builders, were a unknown advanced civilization of polygonal megalith stone builders the Mayans built on top of. These megalith builders are thought to be pre Younger Dryas or what is called the Pliocene Holocene boundary. There are black and white photographs of African babies with bound heads, so that practice was done fairly recent on that continent. Also, Akhenaten, Nefertiti and their children are depicted with elongated heads in Egyptian hieroglyphs. It's definitely an interesting phenomenon.

Very interesting. Disease clearly was an issue throughout history. Especially, in groups of people who were isolated from the rest of the world. Perhaps also amongst the Neanderthal people who apparently also disappeared relatively quickly in Europe? Isolated tribes in the Amazon still suffer from these issues. However, modern cultures are acquainted with many ‘global’ diseases today. Except perhaps deliberately or accidentally engineered new diseases? Biological weapons being the most effective, stealthy and controlled in their effect. Perhaps the Central Asian and Europeans biggest unwitting weapons in some parts / places in history were mainly biological. Perhaps, also the Incas / Mayans lack of apparent willingness to expand into new more wide open (less densely populated/tropical) territories like North America (unlike many European or Central Asian people) also spelled their doom?

One topic I haven’t heard discus much is how many offspring were born of Adam and Eve between receiving the breath of life and the curses they received received in judgment. I think it may be incorrect to try and measure it in units of time as we understand it because what is “time” to beings who have access to the tree of life? If you look at the North American Indians that supposedly came through the Alaskan/Siberian bridge that settled throughout Canada and the northern and midwestern parts of the United States have higher cheek bones and look similar to Japanese, Mongolian, Korean, and northern Siberian people. The Indians that settled in the south west/western part of the United States look more Polynesian and the Indians in the east coast look more like lap-landers from Norway or have mixture of some Celtic. The Aztecs had a written language. Many of their codices are in museums in Europe. A Baktun was the Mayan time frame that ended one cycle and began the ending of our current world. It was not to occur on any particular day. It is gradual over time. Also,. The identity of the builders of Teotihuacan is still unknown, but it is believed to be a central meeting ground because artifacts from the Yucatan and from Northern areas have been excavated there.

The tradition was already decades old when I heard it in the 1980s, that eastern Europeans are mixed with mongoloid kinds. I was at a German party in DC, and saw a man who I thought was Chinese. He started speaking German, he was from Germany. Genetic research wasn't necessary to know that some Germans are Chinese and eastern Europeans are mongolic. Even in the second grade I would look at the faces of Irish-American children and regard them as "Chinese" in my then-terminology. Same way with paintings of the kings and queens of Europe -- lack of prefrontal lobal development to me has always been "Chinese". No genetic research was necessary. With many Germans you can tell by their stiff hairs that they are partly Mongolic, and others by their square jaws, high cheekbones, or lack of blond or red or even non-black hairs. I'm really skeptical of the elevated population numbers assigned to the pre-contact Americas. Even the 4 million in North America number talked about here sounds on the high side to me. Remember, they were living a subsistence lifestyle with no pack animals save for dogs and slaves. There are very few places with good enough resources in a small enough area to reach all them on foot and live long enough to make each trip. Higher populations in the warm, lush and fertile Central and South Americas make a little more sense but I still think their population numbers run quite high.

I am Canadian and I have relatives who are First Nations on my late father's side. My middle siblings have been asked if they are Native and my brother got jumped by Skin Heads for being Native when he was young and hand long hair. The middle two siblings have dark hair and eyes and tan. My brother actually looks like a Mongolian man I met years ago. A big tall guy. I and my youngest sibling are lighter. I have reddish hair with greenish blue eyes and he has dark blond hair with grey eyes but he has more of our father's features with longer straight nose and high cheek bones. He tans and I do not. I was interested in finding out how much Native I am and took the 23&me test. Turns out I am 99...% Irish and English with less than 1% generic Scandinavian and even less off something unknown. I would like to get my siblings done to see how their DNA came out "in the wash." Some might wonder if perhaps we have different fathers, but, as much as I used to pretend that I was switched at birth with another family, we do not. Some of my father's side is showing on my genetic family tree. I already knew I had a lot of relatives, because between both sides of my family, I have over 100 first cousins, but I have first cousins, once removed, on there that I am trying to find out who their parents are because I don't know all of my first cousins. I know very little about my father's side. I know my mom's genelogy back several generations because it was done around 30 years ago and we already knew a lot because my family is mentioned in history books and still have titles. Some scattered from the family when the English came down hard on the Irish Royal families. It is pretty interesting though. The next head of the clan is actually going to be a Spanish Baron and not Irish, the first one not actually from Ireland and not mostly Irish and English. The current one is a Catholic Priest. I wish there had been more diverse genetic information, but I am hoping my siblings will also take the test too.

European culture/history is taught (in my opinion) because, well, to the victor go the spoils and they get to write history. There is a book by Orson Scott Card called COLUMBUS REDEMPTION (fiction/fantasy, of course). It is an interesting take on world history and the ending is quite surprising. In the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City there is a large canvas with authentic drawings of a people coming to their land by 8 or 9 barges across the great deep led by a light source held in their hand.
