My path to becoming interested in watches was not one that happened all at once, but there is one moment that tied me to the world of watches forever, the time I first heard the story of an old watch owned by my great grandfather, Canio. In this video, I'll share a bit of family history through the lens of a relatively simple vintage watch that, for me, represents why I do what I do.

Thank you everyone for the positive feedback on this. I was a bit reluctant to make a video of this style as I knew it would be a very personal video for me to make so I am glad to see it has connected with many. As a cool and important side note, all the music used in this video was composed by my father.

Well..Courtney...we hope to see a proposal, wedding and the patter patter of tiny feet soon! Make sure they're boys! After all, you are now part of this legacy and you also have responsibility! Wow...bet you didn't see that coming! Seriously, this was a heartwarming video and very meaningful to me. I too was the last in my family to carry forward our namesake. It turns out we were only able to have one daughter..so the bloodline ends with me. It's something that crosses my mind from time to time, so instead of a family lineage, I've focused on external legacies through my day job where I can make an impact to society. Wishing both of you the best..and many boys!

Teddy, this is beautiful. Forgive me a little (lot) of my own story. I'm a year younger than your dad, so the man I'm talking about is the same generation as your great grandfather...my granddad. Grandpa learn watch repair back in the late 30's, early 40's. Mom remembers him looking at watch parts at the kitchen table when she was very small. I have only a very few memories of him. About a year ago, I decided to pursue something that has held a deep fascination for me...learn watch repair like him. So at 60 years of age, I have done that, thanks to many great teachers on KZbin, and passionate watch people like yourself. I have been buying, repairing, and selling for about a year, and I love it. And I called myself the Legacy Watch Guy in honor of my grandfather's memory. I wish he would have lived longer...I may not have waited till I was so old, but his picture, and a forged copy of his diploma with MY name on it (compliments of my daughter) hang next to my bench. I had a moment while watching this video; in that I went through a similar exchange of heirloom from one generation to the next. My great-grandfather immigrated from Italy to the U.S. when he was 10. His parents and all of their family members moved here and they all worked hard to put food on the table and a house over their heads. Eventually they moved around and settled in a small town in northwestern Pennsylvania. My great-grandfather was a musician in his spare time when he wasn't working construction or raising his 5 children. He had a drumset that he bought in the late 50's (a Ludwig WFL for those curious) and he played shows and gigs around PA and Ohio. Eventually he passed the drumset down to my uncle, who eventually passed it down to me. Watching this video made me connect in a surreal way that I felt every word you said ring true to me in a connected way, Teddy. Great video as always!

Teddy, that is a very striking and sobering story. I am the same age as your Dad. About 19 years ago something similar happened to me. My Dad had an 18K Solid Rose Gold Tank manual wind watch with an integrated jubilee style bracelet that he bought in 1949 and he gave my mother a similar ladies rose gold watch. These were wedding presents to each other. I remember telling both my mother and father in my 20's that I did not want the watch in death, meaning I did not want to get the watch due to an inheritance. But, rather i wanted to be given the watch in life. I remember the watch as a very young child when my Dad would wear it on special occasions. And, then in 1999, my father was diagnosed with a terminal illness was and told he had six months or less to live. My mother remembered my request regarding the watch and one day near my parents 50th wedding anniversary, my mother called me to come over to their house. Not knowing the reason why I was asked to go there, I was surprised to see my Dad, sitting in his favorite chair in the living room with my mother nearby and my Dad called me over to him and he smiled and had the watch in his hands. He told me how proud he was of me as a son, as a man (I was 39 years old at the time), as a husband and as a father. He then handed her handed the watch to me in the original royal dark purple velvet case. I stayed with him and thank him. I held back the tears until I could get in my car and out of his sight. My Dad died about 3 months after that. In life, my Dad was not perfect by any means. But, in life he was the most happy-go-lucky person you'd ever meet. He provided for a family of four by working 2 and 3 jobs at a time to make ends meet. The main job he worked was for the then B&O Railroad, where he had worked for 37-1/2 years before retiring. He was a WWII veteran, proudly serving in the southeast Pacific theater. When I got married and had children, he and I would go out for breakfast on Saturday mornings and just spent time together. It is going on 22 years since my Dad died and there isn't a day that I don't miss home. I loved my Dad, respected my Dad and have a family heirloom that I will treasure until I die and will pass it on to my son in life, just like your Dad did with you and my Dad did with me. Treasure your Dad.

That story of your watch is incredible. That is what's missing in a lot of what I see in the watch hobby/business. Heart, passion and true meaning. I'm glad you did share your story. Canio would be proud.

Beautiful story Teddy… Thank you for sharing❤️ one thing that I don’t have like you do is having a great relationship with your father. I hope one day I can reconnect with my father, I haven’t seen him since the pandemic started and he’s in the mid 80’s now.

Beautiful video Teddy. My grandfather on my father’s side came to Australia, from Greece, after the Second World War. Worked his backside off for the future of his family, alongside 2 of his brothers (and more who came later). Similar to your father and his grandfather, my grandfather would speak to me endearingly, though I never truly understood all he was saying. I’d get my father to translate. After he passed, he too had heirlooms he passed on. A couple watches in the mix. I golf plated vintage seamaster and a beautiful blue dialed 70’s Seiko. Fortunately my grandfather had many grandchildren to pass his name and memories onto. And while they are just items, only we can decipher their true meaning and significance in theirs, and our lives. I really do appreciate this video. It’s beautiful to see these family values being maintained by others. All the best for your family in future!

Thank you, Teddy! I am a watch collector myself, and sometimes in my journey, I tend to forget the real reason I love watches-the connection with my past, present and future. Thank you for reminding me why watches are my passion . Family is everything... I hope you the best!!

I had an idea about the reason why this watch was important to you even before watching it. I proudly wear my father’s Gruen watch on special occasions, even though it doesn’t run. Thank you for sharing such a special and personal story.

This is a true homage to legacy and family heirlooms. My father gifted me his watch this last Christmas, and it meant the world to me, so I can relate very well to the whole sentiment of familial love through the gift of heirlooms. On a side note, your dad is an amazing storyteller, so it shows where you get it from. FANTASTIC VIDEO!!!!!

Teddy, thank you for sharing your family’s history. The story is what makes this watch. You can see how important this watch was for your grandfather and father. It brought a tear to my eyes when your father passed it down to you and for you to continue to carry the legacy of this beautiful timepiece. Yes, it is timeless!! I am a watch collector……mainly Omega. My daughter, Emily, has her eye on my only IWC (Spitfire) and I hope to gift this to her one day. This year I decided to gift her my first watch that I had purchased back in the early 1990’s. It was a Gucci watch. I will always remember the look in her face when she received it. I also told her the history of this watch and how I had to save in order to get this watch. I was younger then and several hundred dollars was a lot to me back then. Emily wanted to replace the black leather strap since it had seen it’s day. We both went to the Gucci boutique in Short Hills, NJ. The manager there said that this watch was considered vintage as it is no longer made by Gucci. The Gucci black leather strap is also no longer made. So…we happen to find a generic one online. Emily still holds the original Gucci strap as a reminder that her father wore it. Teddy, thank you for this video. I happen to see your five year anniversary of your channel and was not aware of this video. Congratulations for all you do for our watch community!!

The kind of personal story men talk about and share because of its value, great video. I bought my first omega when I graduated from college and had enough to buy a quality timepiece. There was never any other brand I would have considered. My grandfather wore an Omega and gifted each of his sons one when they graduated from college. So a baseline was set. But, much more important than that: I Ioved my grandfather very much. That watch reminds me of him, about growing up, and walking my own path.

Thank you for this video. I was seven and my father was 40 when he received a watch from his employer for 25 years of service, never missing a day of work in that 25 years. My father wore this watch constantly for 45 years, until he passed away this April. I was given his watch, sent it to Geneva to be repaired, and now have it as my most prized possession. Now, I will care for it until I can one day pass it down to my son. This is why I love watches, because they become a part of us and are with us for every birth, wedding, and funeral in our lives. They help us to mark the important times in our lives, but more importantly, they help us to remember that our time here is finite. We only have a short period of time to make a positive difference in the world, and our watches will be with us when we do.

Beautiful and profound, thank you for that, Teddy. My grandfather got me into watches, sharing his passion with me. Today I carry my father’s gold Tisso Visodate Seastar Seven Militar given to him when he graduated from college. I also have a Cartier given to my mom still in her teens by her father, the one that got me into watches.
