Gotta say, I’m 49 and sing at church on a weekly basis. When I started singing along with Billie Eilish, and appreciating the softness of my own voice and the quiet dynamics, I feel like it’s made me such a better singer. Like, power and range used to be how I judged whether I did a song well. Having the air behind the quiet notes is the trick! Not easy at all.

I'm happy to see her using her full voice more often. I like the breathy voice, but lately she's been introducing more variety to her sound. She's talked about learning to sing in more ways in a recent interview. Did you hear her performance of "What Was I Made for?" at the Grammy's? Not quite as adventurous as this, maybe, but still well worth watching.

My mother used to teach voice lessons. I used to wish so badly that I could sing like her students. When she finally started to teach me to sing it was extremely hard. She even made me wait until I was in high school so I wasn't too young. I learned resonance, projection, expression. I was in choirs, sang solos... I worked hard. Now I'm 55 and even though I am mature, I still struggle to sound the same from day to day. But Billie? At 15 she sounded better than I ever will. Billie's voice is p e r f e c t. Every note, every song, soft or loud, high or low, fast or slow... her voice is exquisite. The only thing that changes how she sounds is how she *wants* to sound, which is as perfect as it gets. She's a prodigy. And I just know somewhere my mother is enjoying every note. Warm wishes from Minnesota! ❤️❤️❤️

Shivers over shivers ✨ As I continue to discover my voice through your courses and videos I’m constantly pursuing abandonment into the story and emotion of the piece. This analysis is an eye opener for me in that abandonment doesn’t necessarily mean wild and unhinged, as so perfectly demonstrated by performers like Ado. They can also be … haha I’m not even sure what to call it. It’s different yet you see, hear and feel how completely immersed, abandoned, she is in the experience. Seeing you react and then break down what she is doing to get these subtle but intensely moving moments from her performance is soooo helpful. Such a timely example for me. Thanks Chris. 🙏🥰

Nice reaction/review/analysis. two live performances that you may not be aware of are: 1) Billie's cover of Peggy Lee's "FEVER" July 27, 2022 [Channel SoCalLiveitLive ; Billie also sings "Is that All There is with Debbie Harry [of Blondie fame - its terrific, an older star and younger star enjoying each other's company; 2) covering "Sally's Song" channel: Lucid October 29, 2021 - she also sings "simply meant to be" with Danny Elfman but that is only about 1:10 long. The audio is not the best, but I think it would be good enough to reveiw [Its also on the VENOM channel]

Rumor has it that this song is about Billie’s friend Devon Lee Carlson. Devon dated The Neighborhood frontman, Jesse Rutherford for 6 years. Devon and Billie were good friends and were in the same social circle for years. But then Billie started dating Jesse in ‘22-’23. Fans think the song is of Billie addressing the situation by comparing herself to Devon and expressing remorse. …Devon is also the owner of Wildflower phone cases.

Billie is known for referencing Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra and then some current artists but, I'm certain she has listened to a lot of Billie Holiday. It isn't as obvious in this song but if you listen to "I wish you were gay" especially her live from Austin city Limits "Listen before I go" I keep saying and I'll say it again, Billie E. is a jazz musician. Her genius is her subtlety. Can't you see a cartoon Of Cab Caloway doing "Bury a friend"? She slips and slides to different genres in one song, she's amazing. the song "Happier than ever" starts out as a ditty in the 1930's on a country porch and then before you know it.. You're in Hollywood listening to Rock! Billie Holiday thought of her voice as an instrument, so does miss Eilish.

So, what she seems to be doing is keeping the sound in the back or her throat while when you're emulating what you're doing it its moving to the front of your mouth. Keep it in the back of your throat and the feeling of the sound will make more sense for how she's making her style. So, yes she pulls it back but it's also never thrown as far forward as you're doing it.

I'd love to see your reaction to some of Aurora's new music. She has been experimenting a lot with her vocals on her newest album. The songs Some Type of Skin, The Dark Dresses Lightly, To Be Alright, and The Blade are all so different from anything she's done in the past, vocally, and musically. She has been using a much deeper register and really showing off her vocal range, AND her ability to belt out a note. Billie's new album was my pick for album of the year until Aurora released her album. Both albums are perfection. And Billie's album title could be a little reference to one of the singles from Aurora's new album. Aurora is the reason Billie decided to become an artist, and I love that both of these albums are on par with each other.

when i listen to these live performances, i'm left thinking that all the comping she does may be a waste of time. i get wanting the final, recorded product to be exactly as it sounds in your head, but when it gets down to splitting up syllables with different takes, i wonder if it's necessary. clearly, she can do it live in one take. i think they did two takes of these songs and edited them together for the result we see, but i bet the parts we didn't see were still really good.

The purpose of comping is not to produce the perfect recording but to discover the perfect composition to perform to. Most producers don't give adequate importance to this part at all. For each of those slides, for example, Billie would've tried dozens of variations and settled on the final one based on herself comping.

I would love to see you react to an early performance of “idontwanttobeyouanymore” Live on Colors. It’s what solidified me as a Billie fan. Her slides were impeccable then and they have gotten even better. She has worked on her vocal skills and techniques and it definitely shows on her latest album HIT ME HARD AND SOFT. She still has some of the same breathyness but the slides, the runs, the belts, the vibrato , ALL OF IT IS NEXT LEVEL. This is the first time I’ve heard her use BGV and harmonize with not just Finneas. And the arrangement is slightly different and they added the rounds at the last part. And just like Ren, her facial expressions match her vocalization of the lyrics, and it’s beautiful and haunting and you can FEEL THE EMOTIONS SHE IS EMOTING.
