In 2005, I passed on a loose copy of NES "Bonk" for $15. It haunts me to this day.

@@bostonrailfan2427 , it was when I was working in CO. My NES was in storage at the time. The label was of the game was loose on the top edge (but not torn). I was convinced that, since I had seen it once, I'd probably see it again in a bit better shape 🤡

Skyblazer was my first ever game rental and I fell in love with that game the first moment I first started playing it. I guess the game being a limited release explains why I was never able to find it in retailers but Blockbuster did me a solid and sold the game to me for $10 back in 1997 when they were clearing out inventory of past gen games. I'm feeling nostalgic now.

3:58 I think that means 'new episodes aired from 89 to 90' the show obviously stayed on the air way longer, but back then you would like, crank out 65 episodes and air them over a year and a half every week, then sit and wait for the syndication money to come in.
@HylianFox3

Syndication made a lot of shows seem like they were in production for longer than they actually were.

I had bought both the 2 rare NES games featured in this episode back in the late 90s from Funcoland for a reasonable price. I ended up selling them and some other rare games in 2015 to buy my son some clothes for school and splurge on a trip to Las Vegas with my girlfriend. It was worth it.

@ukrpgfan4029 In the end yes . My son had some new clothes for school and I enjoyed my 1st ever trip to Las Vegas but sadly in Nov. 2020 my son passed away due to health problems he was 22 years old , me and my girlfriend turned ex-fiance broke up 2 months later for various reason but we're still friends. Despite all that my son blessed me with a granddaughter on Jan. 7 ,2021 and that's way more valuable to me than both those NES games I had sold.

If you check out Battle Chess... get any of the PC versions (MS-DOS is most common I think). The 3DO version is slow, as demonstrated, but the PC one moves at a good pace and all the animations are intact. There's also an NES one but that's censored. I was shocked it even existed.

I have a soft spot for Lester the Unlikely. Mom and Dad bought it for us, and we'd play the first level up until a certain point where the tiki statues would kill us every time. So I quit playing it and eventually traded it for something else. Then about 5 years ago, I watched a let's play of it because I was feeling nostalgic, and I saw if you kicked the statues, they would go away and you could continue. So I rebought the game thinking there was no way it was that easy and that these statues had been in my way for no reason for 30 years. Sure enough, kicked the statues and I continued in the game. Still haven't beaten it, but I keep it in my collection for knowing I am finally able to beat it.

One of those rare examples of visible character development throughout a game. Maybe not a great game by most metrics, but it has to be given some credit for that alone, too bad that most people would have quit before seeing any of that unfold, lol.

While working for my dad in construction, he bought a house that was practically unlivable with remodeling plans in mind. Turned out a massive gamer lived in it as game consoles, controllers, PC joysticks, cases/boxes, manuals, and strategy guides were scattered practically everywhere, though actual games were seldom to come by, and many I did find saw abuse by the weather. However, there was game that preserved probably thanks to having one of those plastic SNES bottom protectors AND a plastic video store rental case (the latter which, after watching this video, makes sense). The moment I first saw the cartridge(that still works wonderfully) was the moment I realized that Skyblazer was even a thing! I didn’t even know it was a rental store exclusive until today. Hidden gem? Yep, only in my case it was treasure among the trash!

It surprises me a lot to see the actual prices on both of the NES games, it's incredible how they've sky-rocketed like that! But I can understand the value increasing so much, due to their obscurity -kinda?-... Maybe I'm just convincing myself that I'll never get a copy of them at this rate... Sky Blazer was one of the games I wish I could play back in the day; I had a Sega Genesis with my brother but we knew about this game thanks to video game magazines, and mostly thanks to an old TV show about Nintendo Games (the first one in Argentina) called "Power Games". We were mesmerized by the magic powers the main character was unlocking during the game, becoming more and more powerful, and all the "manga" styled action. We prayed to being able to get a port on the Genesis someday (that or get ourselves a SuperNES console... which was even more impossible, to be honest). In the end we were able to play the game on emulators (yeah, I know), and it was as amazing as it was the first time we saw it on TV. It'd be amazing to have ports of the game for the new gen of consoles and PC, but I sadly doubt something like that to ever happen... Dang it, it is like the whole "I want it on the Genesis" thing yet again! Story repeats itself! Anyway, awesome episode, as always. Love you, guys! Sorry if my grammar and spelling are a bit off.

Usually I hate the value gain section because a lot of times I'm like "I used to have that game, I wish I hadn't sold it" or "I wish I had gotten it when it was cheap." This time though.... I somehow DID get Skyblazer when it was cheap, with the box (I don't think I have the manual) and I'm happy I did. Despite being a game I didn't play as a kid, I wound up loving it.

As it turns out, seasons had a lot of episodes for syndication purposes. And, when rerun, the episodes would be in or out of order. In any case, it's really interesting how it plays out
@gurvmlk
@gurvmlk 7 ай бұрын
@@MentalLiberation Not to mention that as kids, we can only perceive it as we see it. So long as we're watching and enjoying a show, it makes sense to assume that the show is still airing, and going strong. Especially if we're occasionally seeing new episodes, or have no idea how many episodes would perhaps equal a year's worth of syndication.

Of course Sony was one of the first to attempts this; outside of Capcom with Final Fight Guy (but that game wouldn't have sold that well considering how similar it was to the regular Final Fight and was still gimped without coop or the entire roster. I was one of the kids that got Chip and Dale 2. I was still getting NES games while I had the SNES and got the Genesis (Megadrive in UK where I grew up) way later as the Megadrive 2 that came with Sonic 3. This is also how I ended up with Ducktales 2. I would eventually go back and get many more NES and MEgadrive games super cheap from a place called Cash Converters. They went through a period where they sold NES games for £1.99 each and Megadrive games for £2.49. This is how I ended up getting Zelda 2, Toejam and Earl 1 & 2, Herzog Zwei, Cyborg Justice Sonic 1 & 2 and a butt ton more. I remember once I got my first job, I felt so rich I went in and bought like 10 NES and 5 Megadrive games in one swoop. Good times! Remember too that despite what people say about games being expensive today, they were way more expensive back then. SNES games when it was the current generation console were £60-£70 back in the early 90s. Megadrive games were still in the £50s. Even now, games are like £45-£50 tops. So to see a horde or games for less than a fiver each was like crack!

I just came here to say thanks for giving Lester the Unlikely some justice. The game is not incredible, but it's far from the trash many people believe it is (mostly thanks to AVGN's video covering it). It's pretty cool that the game has some character development that not only affects the way he moves, stands still and presents himself, but also changes the gameplay.

So whenever I saw my friends playing Battle Chess on their computers, I (annoyingly) was always confused asking "why don't they fight back?" when the pieces fought. Cut to years later for those interested and now you CAN actually play chess AND fight it out when pieces meet each other on the board in a 1v1 fighting game called Checkmate Showdown on stream now!

I remember Skyblazer being announced as something special here in Spain too and getting good reviews. It was a pretty common game so I borrowed it from somebody. At first it looked like the hype was real. The graphics were very nice and colorful and the music and mood somewhat epic but the more I played the more I felt something was off. It was clearly not what the magazines had tried to sell us.
