Yes to classic simple proven designs. I'm a senior who has owned 26 vehicles over the years - I've probably driven close to 1 million miles. I currently drive a last generation Lincoln Town Car with the ultra reliable 4.6 2V V8 and a solid 4 speed automatic. 18 years and 150k miles later and it has needed close to nothing outside of regular maintenance. When I bought it I had a nephew who was in the black car executive transportation business. He told me they always seemed to get more than 500k miles from Town Cars, and due to customer requests for Town Cars, a couple were kept in service to 800k miles after the Town Car was discontinued. He said they did nothing special outside of frequent fluids. On his advice I do engine oil and filter changes every 2,500 miles, transmission service every 25k miles, differential service every 50k miles. I still can do all my own service in my home shop and I buy oil and filters in bulk to keep costs low. I upgraded the transmission oil pan to one originally used on the E450 that has a super nice built in factory drain plug for easy transmission service.

Honda’s newer CVTs are more reliable than the 2014-2015 ones, especially when paired with the 2.0. When paired with the 1.5t, the CVT will be in a better shape than the 1.5t in the long run. The hybrids will take that reliability even further. 2014-2015 and 10th gen took it too far with electronics, but 11th gen brought back ergonomics, limiting the touchscreen to be just for audio, CarPlay, navigation, and extra features that drivers are less likely to use. Let’s also mention that the 2025 Civic replaced the 1.5t with the hybrid

Don't forget that some of the older engines have timing belts that need service. I am starting to lean towards the timing belt instead of chain. The chain can stretch and is super expensive to replace, were as the belt was designed to be changed and although it is not a cheap repair, if you do it every 100k with regular maintenance (oil changes at 5k) the engine will last forever. My VW has a chain timing system, and the engineers put it at the back iof the engine. If it needs replacement, it will be engine out and may even be more expensive repair than the car is worth.
@dewdew342 ай бұрын
My old Explorer has 255k and the chain rattles on cold starts but been that way for years ... when it goes it goes. It's a junk hauling, trailer pulling, snow and mud machine. It's not a primary vehicle, uses too much fuel, so it's not a priority, but it's very useful. Maybe i could try and replace the the chain tensioners but i don't really feel like it....The 4.0 is a great motor if you replace the multiple chains, but a big job. I do brakes and hubs, general part swaps but no tear downs, beyond my ability. I keep saying i'm getting something to replace it but it's still a good suv.
@ECPP2 ай бұрын
Agreed Bill, agin a bad design. A quality chain and design can reduce the chance if every having the replace. The problem is many are using single row chains which are weaker and as you say, putting it at the back of the engine on the fire wall simply is ridiculous in the first place.

I have owned 5 Honda’s. I own 3 at this time. One of them is a 1.5T. It’s smoother and more responsive by far. It’s been one of Honda’s main engines for a long while now. Turbo engines require more frequent maintenance which most people don’t take into consideration. (Just take a look at some Carfax’s on used Honda’s and see how frequently people are changing their oil.)So, I have the oil changed every 3-5 thousand miles. There’s someone that has a video on KZbin that has gotten over 600,000 miles out of one of the 1.5t’s. Honda makes mistakes but they are still one of the greatest engine makers in the world. Also, my newest Honda’s body has a much stiffer frame and is built better than my old Honda’s. It’s not even close.

A buddy had a mid 80's Civic. It was the first car I seen with over 350k miles and still running perfect. I like boring in cars and trucks. I barely turn on the radio during 10 hour trips. I miss the old boring dependable Toyota's. It didn't matter if a oil change was missed by the previous owner because most of their drive trains were bullet proof. It seems Toyota has flipped that, most are trouble and look for any excuse to deny warranty now. Oops, you drove the car 86 MPH, the limit is 85.
@davidanderson84692 ай бұрын
Myself and two buddies bought 1985 Toyota trucks. All three ate 2.5qts of oil every 3K. We all had oil consumption tests done by the dealer which confirmed our findings. Toyota deemed it "within specs." One of my friends walked in front of Toyota of Carlsbad with a sign reading "My truck used 2.5 qts of oil ever 3K miles. How about yours." After a few days the owner came out and told him he's getting a new short block. Toyota had a run of defective rings that didn't hug the cylinder wall enough letting oil get into the combustion chambers. This is what the tech told him. I traded mine in for a 1989 Chevy 3500 and my other friend traded his for the same year F-350. Neither used oil and delivered good service for us.

Some manufacturers are finding the smaller engines quite tight for their components. The Direct Injection injector should be pointing straight down onto the piston. With a new injector having good fuel atomization it will leave very little on the cyylinder walls. The problem is that due to the confined space some manufactureres have had to place the injector on an angle. Most of the fuel goes to the top of the piston, but some is pointed directly at the cylinder wall causing the fuel dilution problem. No fix except to get a new engine when it calves, or buy a new car. It is an inherent design flaw.

When the market hits saturation, sales will fade if all the models last 400k miles. Sadly, they have decided to cash in on legendary reliability for short term gain - very high prices with cheap plastic design and fabrication. Obscene runaway technology is the shiny glitter to attract young customers.

Please look at sub-compact cars like the Mazda 3 , commenting on which years or model years would be good choices to make it to 200,000 or 300,000. I prefer a smaller car for economy and garage space, but am leery of turbos and not sure about Hybrid battery life.......... THanks!

Why we aren't feeling good anymore for new cars models, even those we used to trust?! Not just eco regulations, I think it's the fault of current companies' administration, prioritizing shortsighted sales department rather than engineers and technicians.

@@anonymoususer5541 the interior and sedan styling lasted for only 1 model year. 2013 (mostly) shares with 2014-2015, even though the 2013 has more subtle differences from 2014-2015 (cloth seats, dash trim material)

I've seen hondas with cvt transmission go over 300,000 miles. They were made before covid, but they lasted those many miles.
@dgriffin60742 ай бұрын
Nissans have a long history of CVT problems. IMHO, if Honda can't make a CVT reliable, efficient and durable, no one can. Isn't the trend towards small displacement turbocharged engines driven by government fuel economy regulations? If that's true, the Feds should give a tax credit to those who have suffered the consequences of such policies. As Seinfeld would say, " Good luck with all that".
@joeleonard99652 ай бұрын
You are completely missing the two fatal but still managable flaws with this generation. This is equipped with EGR which causes a buildup nightmare regardless and the reccomended oils are too thin post-2012 and cause "premature" ring wear.

As long as you don't live in the rust belt you're better off getting an older car and just replacing parts, even if that eventually means replacing the engine too. If you don't know how to work on cars you'll want to learn. A mechanic will drive you bankrupt just as much as a car dealer. I don't want any screens or features. I'll happily roll up my own window and shift my own gears.
