When I first learned of this island, I came up with an idea. Officially make it disputed territory. Like, in a sort of joking way, make it official that both countries claim it. Then use it as a tourist destination. Put in a museum that explains some of the history of the two nations, have photo ops with politicians from both countries there, and have both countries pay to maintain these facilities. Like, we're such good buddies, that we can actually share territory, and even have some fun with it. You could also sort out the fishing rights at the same time. No hard feelings, a bit of goofy legislature showing how friendly we are, and sort out the fishing issue. Me for president!

According to my mapping software, Machias Seal Island is 10.6 miles from the closest U.S. coastline in Maine and 11.6 miles from the closest Canadian coastline in New Brunswick. Since it is closer to the U.S., by rights it should be recognized as part of the U.S. However, since Canada has taken steps to establish something of a presence on MSI, while the U.S. has not, if I was serving on an international court I would probably rule in favor to Canada's claim.
@robertm4880
@robertm4880 2 жыл бұрын
Since the island is within 6 leagues of the New Brunswick coastline, which is what the article states as intrinsically part of New Brunswick, and the US gets the rest of the islands within 20 leagues. That would, in my mind, imply that the island by rights should be recognized as part of Canada. Thanks for checking the numbers, that was my biggest question not answered by this video.

Small rocks in the North Atlantic aren't exactly known for lovely weather most of the year. Summer's probably nice but the other 9 months... eech. If Global Affairs mans it, the two who get sent there are probably literally getting exiled by their boss for mishandling some diplomatic post not quite badly enough to get them fired. "Bob, that was... interesting... work you did that the embassy in Prague... The Ambassador was so thrilled he mentioned it to the minister and the deputy minister's informed me that he's got a special assignment for you. You're being transferred back home to assist in a territorial sovereign issue. It's an ongoing border issue with the States and we're sure you're just the guy for the job! What we really need to do as Canadians is quietly annex Maine, as it’s such an awesome place. We set up fireworks shows in Portland and Augusta on July 1st that get a little bit bigger each year. We start sending health cards to ME addresses, and surprise doctors by paying the bills they send in. Mainers start randomly receiving GST rebate and Child Tax Benefit cheques. We invite the governor to First Ministers conferences and get everyone to act -really- interested in whatever they say, especially if it’s in French. Meanwhile we set up donut shops along the NH state line and slowly start turning them into border crossings, while the Canada border crossings slowly start turning into donut shops. Finally one day, the President is looking at a U.S. map and casually remarks “hey, wasn’t this part taller?”

Half As Interesting: every time you say the U.S. and Canada share the longest international border, you show on a map the border between Canada and the lower 48 states. This is the world's longest CONTINUOUS border between two countries. However, the U.S. and Canada also share the very long border between the state of Alaska and Canada's Yukon and British Columbia -- which has several border crossings as well. So, it is the combination of these 2 borders that makes the "World's Longest (total) Border" between two countries. You need to be more accurate in your videos by showing BOTH parts of the border, or else saying "continuous border" if you are going to show only the lower 48 border. Just being precise here.

I spent a week on this island about 25 yrs ago, filling in for a light keeper. Access to the island is very restricted by both countries because it is a bird sanctuary for puffins. There are 2 deeds for the island. One is owned by a Canadian, and one is owned by an American. They are the only 2 boats that are allowed to land there, with limited amount of passengers. The light keepers maintain the walkways and buildings, and mow a small lawn. They also give weather reports at regular scheduled times. The waters around the area are called the gray zone, and are fished by both countries. They have a different approach to lobster conservation, which can be an issue.

You know, I’ve seen a lot of videos, from you and others, detailing border disputes, but I think this video is the first that really goes into detail on why they form and how they get formed. I would like to see a more generalized video on why and how we get enclaves and exclaves, and enclaves of one country within exclaves of another. Most importantly, I want to know why these countries don’t just relent and relinquish the territory, even after all of this time. I mean, what would the U.S. lose if they gave the island to Canada, or vice-versa?

howard baxter "...neither country is hostile to one another...". What!? Didn't you hear? Canadian steel and aluminum is a grave threat to American NATIONAL SECURITY. And the California wildfires that have killed at least 80 people as of Nov 24 2018 are all CANADA's fault... because Canada sold too much cheap lumber to the US, demotivating American lumberjacks from clearing California of trees. The thing I find most frightening is that Trump does not drink alcohol (a brother of his died of alcohol poisoning so the Donald doesn't touch it)... which means his unhinged night-time tweeting are all happening when DJT is stone cold sober. At least if DJT were high and/or drunk he'd have an excuse for being so blatantly dumb.

Very educational, "Half As Interesting." But I have a better one for you: in the center of the Spokane River, in the center of Riverfront Park in the city of Spokane, Washington, USA, is "Canada Island." This small forested island was "given" to Canada in 1974 as its exhibition and "outdoor Pavilion" for the World's Fair, Expo '74, held in Spokane which had an environmental theme. Canada planted the island with showcase Canadian plantings and had educational exhibits. And even though passports are not required, it is still considered Canadian territory when you walk across any of the several bridges to visit Canada Island to this day. A remnant of Expo '74.

If the Feds actually followed the Constitution, then their prohibition would only apply when crossing state or international lines (interstate commerce). Unfortunately, that ship sailed over a century ago. Obviously, going to this island from Canada would be considered crossing the border by the US, so any Canucks with weed would be "trafficking" if the Feds were feeling particularly petty that day.
