The last point Chris was on about, about why vietnam does not have soft power or is globalized, which he didn't attempt was to answer is because to main reasons. History and politics. History because Vietnam came out of a devastating war only barely 50 years ago, and sanctions by the US was only lifted in the 90s. That put Vietnam massively behind in term developing economic, rebuilding infrastructure, and rapid industrialization. Japan and Korea could recover from war fast because they had US military protection and their wars ended 20-30 years before Vietnam wars ended. So from that stand point Vietnam was heavily disadvantaged from the get-go. In terms of politics, it's hard to not argue that the communist party is not helpful in terms of developing a thriving economy. Only recently, same with China did economic reform and free market policies allow vietnam ese economy to grow rapidly. Also in 1975, there was a massive brain drain of southerners fleeing the war, furthering the stifle of economic recovery. All of this to say that Vietnam has a lot of working againist it and probably won't see an societal Renaissance until the old guard dies out, changes social manners, backwards scarcity mindset and the Gen z grow up to take up the manlet to advance the economy and country.

The first half was gold, but had to opt-out after you both started speaking Vietnamese lol - but what Chris was saying about being Asian was very interesting and powerful - and I wish you both continued success.

I have a lot of white friends. Have dated many white women. But never have I ever wanted to be white. It’s not that I have anything against them (because I don’t), but it’s because I’m extremely proud of my own culture, my family, my roots, etc 🇲🇽

Great interview! Such a different interview than many of his others online. Re: brands going abroad discussion from the beginning of the interview: also, the concept of "brands" has not existed in Vietnam so long, and the talent to execute exceptional branding is only entering the workforce now in a significant capacity. So, yes, 'small island syndrome' is a thing, but it's also experience of how to build a globe-ready brand, a world-class brand. And there existed also a hesitation to put yourself out there, ready to accept criticism, ready to not be liked by everyone, and being OK with that. I believe the next decade will see more homegrown brands push abroad.

Absolutely LOVED this interview with THE Chris Do. So refreshing to hear him do a deep dive on his asian roots. I’m so inspired to represent not only my Asian culture but to be world class and show “hidden” talent to everyone. Great talk, Peter! Also, I’m from Vancouver too - great to learn about you 🙏

did I hear it right the dude said he is from SanJo and that there wasn't that many Vietnamese? I lived in CA for over the past 30 years and there are a ton of Viet. Second highest Viet concentration other than LA. More Viet in San Jo than in Houston. Perhaps the neighborhood he grew up had more caucasian as SanJo is quite a big city. However, in the past 15 years years, white folks are fleeing the bay Area, and now 85% of school in SanJo has 15% or less caucasian kids.

what is this dude talking about. uh alot of asian brands dominate the international market. Brands from japan and China in particular. No european brand cracks the top most valuable brands int he world and especially no British ones do
@dandung32765 күн бұрын
What are you talking about? European brands clearly still dominate.. BMW Benz Audi Porsche Bentley Ferrari Rolls Lmao are you dumb ? Define value ? Are you talking about total profit per year ? European vehicle manufacturers have dominated the luxury vehicle industry for years . Fashion ? Let’s not even go there . Buddy you’re probably talking about electronics and shit like that but European brands from Europe literally own the luxury car and fashion industry . That’s two massive markets lmao what an idiot

He is an immigrant and a few years younger than me but lived in the US much younger. As an immigrant, came to the US in 1980 at almost age 10, I wouldn’t call myself Vietnamese American since I was not born in the US. I’m Vietnamese with US citizenship. The older Vietnamese generations tend to support the Republican Party and do not care who or how shitty the candidate is.

it depends on who you ask? of course, you wouldn't know if you grew watching Western media. I can alot more, but you won't know because of your ignorance if you grew up in the US. I don’t know nor have heard of a lot of Western brands.
