Navajo Traditional Teachings

2 жыл бұрын

In this week’s video Navajo Historian, Wally Brown, teaches about the language of our people.
They say when the language of our Diné is no longer spoken… that will be the end of the Third World.
The history of the language is a long one. They say that the Holy People were taking the sacred language from the Five-Fingered being because they were misusing it.
A group of people asked to keep the language. After begging four times the Diné were finally allowed to keep the langage.
They were told they need to speak to the plants and animals. They needed to speak to one another to preserve the language.
This is how the Diné language has stayed on the earth.

What I admire most about the Navajo people is the respect they attributed to all other forms of life on earth. Such as referring to ants as the ant people. Compare that to the extermination modern people exercise on everything they find as incompatible? Original design was made for all, not just a few.

One of my good friends was the high chief of the Te Arawa tribe of the New Zealand Māori. It was his life work to preserve their language, genealogy and culture. His name was Hiko o te Rangi Hohepa, which means “Thunder of the Sky”. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the ways of his people and spent his whole life teaching his people their ways, but he has passed on to the Spirit World now. So much has been lost. Te Wairua Tapu (Holy Spirit) bless you Hiko. I’ll see you again one day, my friend…

@Michael Fómhar I'm talking about acknowledging your ancestry and wanting to become a member of the tribe. Your purpose in life is to let go of your false human identity and to embrace your true identity of being a spiritual entity that is infinite and indestructible. You have the ability to incarnate into any physical creature of advanced intelligence which means that you are not bound to the human form or any physical form. However, in order to achieve spiritual freedom you must acknowledge your connection to your fellow human beings by accepting responsibility for them, where accepting responsibility constitutes sacrificing your own happiness, comfort and life in the service of others. This is what the old man in the video failed to mention because this knowledge was misinterpreted by your ancestors.

I know that story is true, it has been told to me since I was a little child. It was written in a book, the first time I ever saw the book I had come down with chicken pox. I remember my mother setting it down on the night stand next to the medicine she was using to treat me with and so in my innocence I asked if it was a book to help with my chicken pox. She simply said “No, this book is very important” and left the room. I will never forget the feeling that came over me the very instant she said those words. And I knew that it came from a higher place even as young as I was and I knew that I would never be able to deny it. I believe your people are a chosen people of God (the Great Spirit) and your knowledge is valuable and very much needed in these days. Thank you for sharing

How right you are Grandfather Wally. With each new generation in language, tradition, personal character so much has been and continues to be lost because those who are young are not being taught those things. It's tragic in my opinion. My Mom taught me to talk to house plants. I've talked to the trees since I was old enough to walk, as did my children. When our granddaughter was about a year and half old, she and my daughter were outside roaming our 3.5 acre yard in the country. My daughter brought our granddaughter brought her in for a nap, then came into the kitchen and said, "I think something may he wrong with my daughter. She just stopped and talked to a tree." I smiled and said, "She stopped to talk to that tree because it asked her a question, she heard that question clearly, so she answered it. You and your brother used to talk to the trees and it started at about the same age. I still talk to the tree and have since I was that same age. There's nothing wrong with her; she hears and understands the oldest, simplest language known to man in the entire universe. The language we all are born knowing and have chosen not to hear anymore." That particular tree is one of three Cottonwood Trees in our yard. It is the only female tree of the three and it is the largest in diameter and heighth. She has been here a very long time and is just under 5 ft. in diameter. One male tree is just under 4 ft. in diameter, the other male tree is about 2 1/2 ft. in diameter. The trees rememeber everything. Thank you for sharing! ~ APRIL LIPKE

@@chrisoher You already know it. You have since birth. Find a place where you can just sit in silence, be still. At first it may be hard to do. You may think it's boring nothing is happening. I've never been a patient person, except for the times I sit quietly, alone, outside and just listen to the world around me without anything electronic in my hands. Just listen to nature around you. You will start to notice even the faintest whisper of a breeze as it gently brushes through the limbs of a juniper tree or as it barely touches the blades of grass. You will hear it when frogs croak at night and crickets sing. You will feel peace and at the same time feel thr vibration from every living thing around you. Every living thing is connected. As time has given us "modern conveniences" because we want things immediately, right now, we have forgotten how to just be still. If you live in a very busy city or town, I recommend doing this sometime late in the evening to early morning. Between sunset and sunrise. Have you ever noticed how much the color of leaves, grass and flowers just seem to pop and are insanely bright when it rains? It's really quite beautiful. Do you ever just go outside when there's a nice steady rain shower and stand in it or jump in puddles? I do and I'm 55 years old. My adult children still do. Have you ever really listened to the rain or smelled the rain? I have played out in the rain when the sun was out and you couldn't see a cloud in the sky. It does happen. We all love rainbows. Did you know rainbows are actually round, they are a circle, not an arc? We only see rainbows to the horizon, which gives the illusion of being an arc. You will hear the oldest language known to man in the laughter of a child because that is one of the purest sounds on Earth. You see we have forgotten that no matter what our physical age may be, we are all still just children. As we get older, we put our childlike wonder at the world around us away because we're "grown ups". If you still are in awe of watching toddlers as they learn new things, it's because you miss feeling that feeling yourself. It's still there inside you. Find it. Walk in the grass barefoot, or sit under a tree whenever you can and you will feel it. You'll be surprised when everything suddenly just makes sense. You will even begin to feel better. Talk to the trees, animals and plants around you. When we bought our house 12 years ago, the biggest bull frog I had ever seen came out from underneath the deck. So I talked to him. We had lived here just shy of two months, which was in May of they year, when my husband got home from the store, he hopped out on to the sidewalk as we approached the deck, I greeted the frog back and gently rubbed my hand across his back. He sat there and just let me pet him. That was our routine every day for 8 years once there was no cold weather. It happened every day I came home from work or came home from being at the store, etc. It's been 4 years ago since I last saw him. I feel that he passed away. He was as big in diameter as a saucer. No, I never once fed him to coax him out. I just talked to him, in English every time I saw him. Human beings are arrogant and believe they are superior in all ways and all things, generally speaking. The reality is we don't know half as much as we think we do. Just talk to every living thing around you and at some point, you will hear an answer. There are stories about talking to trees and nature in the history of The First People, Celts, Druids, Indigenous People of the Rainforests, Australia, Vikings, across many cultures. It's been going on since the beginning of time.😉 ~ APRIL LIPKE

Navajo original language... I would like to add my own confirmation to this. I found myself in a domestic violence shelter with a beautiful young Navajo woman. She put all of us women in a circle and began to smudge each woman using her native tongue. It was beautiful beyond words. When she began to smudge me, she stopped and said something to my chest throat area. I had never heard Navajo before but I understood her. Confused, I asked her what she said. She looked me in the eyes and asked me in English, if I was of native blood. (My grandmother was Cherokee) When I said yes, she smiled and said she knew it. She continued her smudging with a different excited type feeling. If Navajo is not the original language, how is it that I was able to understand her with never hearing Navajo before? That one question is the only thing I understood her say. I still do not speak Navajo. This beautiful woman spoke straight to my soul and my soul heard her. I wish I knew how to contact her.

Everything on Earth is sacred, but humans have desecrated that holiness and forsaken the Mother for technology, and hurt the Mother by robbing her of her fineries, leaving scars and garbage in their wake. This man’s wisdom is so profound. It’s beyond race or political party, it’s what we humans have done to the Great Mother in our quest for power and riches -with no regard to the very being that supports our existence.

It is said, by many " old ones" : "our languages carry and ( is) the embodiment of the people" ! That of course covers a wide variety of areas..music , spoken language, and life as is known at this time...! It has been shared with me, that ( not ) all language is [ spiritual]... point in case : the version of American English... this language has many roots n meanings n interpretations ( it has no " spirit ") it is merely a means of communication! It comes from [ many different languages] and some of their " intent & convenience" is obscure at best! Not pure of ( spirit )! Save your ( indigenous) ways. ."save your language"!

I am gathering as much as I can of what was lost so I can pass on our ways to my son. I am the last in the family who was passed what was left of the sacred knowledge passed down in our line. And I can count on my hand the number of things passed down. Since I was young, other relatives sold sacred items for drugs, some items were broken from misuse, and many have crossed over.. knowledge is all that is left, along with some of my dad's powwow regalia. In order to revitalize the ways of my great grandmother and her children, I have begun my path as an herbalist, and a nurse until I can break away from the city and go back home to the Earth, where my heart may once again feel One.. keep teaching. My daughter and I don't speak a drop of Mohican. And yes we are enrolled. I try to teach my daughter the best I can what I know and learned. I've had times (usually when I was very young more so) when I would know what people were about to say. I couldn't figure how this worked, only that I would sense it at times. I've also had times when I will hear music like a celestial orchestra (violins & stringed instruments), usually after a vigorous bout of exercise. I suppose it has to do with the brain waves. I also at these times come up with ideas and inventions. Once I came up with an idea for a type of small pizza item for restaurants. I told my mother about this, and around 3 months after I saw a Pizza Hut commercial for a similar item, only slightly smaller than what I'd imagined. I'd read that there are "ideas" in the collective consciousness of humanity, like a library or record room, where if you can tap into this, you can find ideas and creations that someone else (or nobody) had come up with. I believe this is how many inventors arrived at their inventions and developments. It's a consciousness thing, where you have to be in a certain relaxed and receptive mode.

What hurts mother earth the most is what lies in the hearts of the people. If we all have unconditional love for one another and forgiveness then many of the end time prophesies will not happen. If more and more love is practiced, it will create a snowball effect and spread to all of societies problems and also of the damage that has been done to mother earth. While Diné Bizaad is sacred there was an even more sacred language that superceded it and I'm afraid that that language might be completely gone now. Only very few Holy men knew that language and it was the same language that contained many of the stories of a pale skinned God that came to our people and all tribes long ago. They each had a stone that they used to reveal truth and this group of Holy men consisted of 12 men. When the pale skinned God came among the people of the Americas, He always left 12 teachers and one leader and they all were ordained with His priesthood. Idk if many tribes still have their high priests but I know that the Hopis do and they claim to have the same priesthood today.

@@paulabonin3637 one of the biggest reasons this country is doomed. I'm German, I live in Germany and know my ancestors. That's one of the reasons why I love Germanic tribes so much. A lot of the good things the roman people put in the bible where actually Germanic traditions and rituals, escpecially the modern christmas celebrations like decorating a tree with the colors of red, green and golden but it was calles Julefest, easter was actually a fertility celebration for the goddes Ostara that's why it's called "Ostern" in Germany and it explains the search for eggs. Walking around bare feet in a German forest has something magical and powerfull.

@@Cuteemogirl94 I would know nothing about my ancestors except my maternal line were longtime genealogists and I went to Ancestry for my paternal line. I moved to Texas 6 years ago and have since discovered that my paternal line founded Arlington Texas and were some of the first settlers in Dallas. I wouldn’t have known any of that if not for working on my genealogy on Ancestry.

Interesting story,! The part where the language is divided in different tongues after the misuse of it's divine power reminds me strong of the Tower of Babel story (from the Bible) and the following confusion of the human family, the division in different tongues and all the misery that followed from that day onward.

@@rippedtorn2310 most of them are not in touch with their spiritual side, it scares them. I have a really religious friend who is a good person but when asking her about the bible she gets a little hard to deal with when you try and connect it to anything spiritual. We were watching some birds fly over our heads one day and I realized she could not see as far or with as much depth perception as I can see. I wear glasses and can't see like I used to and she doesn't but she still couldn't see as much as I see. I thought to myself, wow....no wonder we have different ways of looking at things and understanding but...hey...I think The Creator or The Father God made us that way for a reason. We have a saying in our family when in doubt about anything going on or something we can't quite understand. It is.......Well..............the Lord works in mysterious ways! We have to understand each other with love and caring and go slowly. I feel like he lives within us and works through us. Reading more of the bible and being able to hear more from others and how they think about everything is so much better than the television these days.

These lessons, while intriguing in and of themselves, are deeply fascinating for the similarities they share with other ancient cultures throughout the world. The concept of sacred language and everything upon the Earth having a true name is something shared in almost every continent by one or more different civilizations throughout human history, and it honestly confuses me as to how some people can't seem to find any interest in these histories.

Thank you for this. Nature is the canvas upon which God sends us messages. When we listen, the creatures of the earth and the earth herself will speak to us. Even more so, God will speak to us but how can we understand if we have lost the words. Your teachings are a strength to me. I have grieved the loss of even common language. Conceptual illiteracy is abundant. The perversion of language is a clear sign of the times. But I still crave truth and the words that embody her. Blessings to you.

I am 57not my real name, I am a woman. I remember hearing this as a child. I didn't think that things would end in my lifetime and maybe they won't. Right now I don't know if it's media? Though I do not watch TV or read newspapers I hear others talking so I know too much of what goes on or what people think is going on. It does seem more like the end of times. Every generation has had this thought? I am familiar with many indigenous people teaching their children their language not just English they're spoken to First in their language Dené ( Navajo and Lakota) I'm so sad I don't know whether to Rejoice or just be sad. What you said is true though I don't know that I'm able to process it properly. It's hard to go on day today when you don't know what tomorrow brings. I'm a planner when it comes to life so this is difficult for me though I know we're never guaranteed the next moment. This seems much different. Thank you for your knowledge as always

I too am very concerned about the media. I try to dip into it with critical thinking and instinct, not simply believe everything they say. I can't count the number of times their facts turned out to be false. However, the terrible damage to the Earth and it's creatures (including us) is very real. You don't need the media to see it. Simply walk on a beach you walked as a child, and you will see the trash washing ashore. Simply go to a garden where you watched bees and butterflies, and you will see few. Simply go to the lush forest you loved, and you will see it is dying or burning. There is still hope, but it is hard to hold onto it...

This is the generation which all the people's ancient prophesies spoke of. I believe we're making a "jump" to a higher dimension, those who are ready. Others will experience another 3d world, as this one is going through a huge cataclysm like what happened at Atlantis, except possibly more extreme. There will be intervention from higher beings for those who are prepared and have clean hearts.

There were two Navajo girls in my Freshman dorm in college. I remember hearing them carry on conversations in their Native language. Those two girls would now be wise grandmothers. I hope they have taught their children and grandchildren in the ways of their ancestors. I’m so glad that the descendants of the White Man who invaded this land are finally beginning to learn from the various indigenous tribes on the North and South American continent as well as all indigenous peoples around the world.
