Dave Rubin of “The Rubin Report” talks to Christopher Rufo and Stephen Blackwood, the founder of Ralston College, about the current state of universities in America and the recent unrest on campuses. Stephen Blackwood discusses his aim to create a university that emulates the best aspects of historical universities, focusing on gifted scholars, eager students, and a strong sense of community. Christopher Rufo discusses his work in exposing corruption in institutions and the need for creative destruction to allow for new growth; how the current state of universities presents an opportunity for new institutions like Ralston College to thrive; and much more.
Applications for Ralston’s 2024-25 MA in Humanities close soon, on Sunday 12 May: if you would like to learn Ancient Greek in Greece, then study the great works of Western literature, philosophy, and art in beautiful and historic Savannah, please make your application at the link below. The strongest applicants will be eligible for a full scholarship, covering all costs.

Something needs to change, many colleges have become a farce of higher education. Employers used to treat colleges as "Work Experience" because students were expected to dress and comport themselves the same way they would in their profession. 30 years ago Colleges stopped teaching students professional behavior or even how to act like an adult, instead they are reinforcing behaviors that will get you fired in most professions. 15 years ago they stopped failing students, a college degree is no longer a guarantee that the person can even read. I'm pretty sure my Dog could pass classes that list themselves as "Inclusive" 10 years ago they started encouraging militancy and political bigotry. 5 years ago they started encouraging criminal behavior and human rights violations. Now you have large companies threatening to blacklist Ivy League Colleges. In very near future you will see job postings with things like: "Harvard Graduates need not apply" in the qualification section.

A blacklist is simply not going to work as you imagine it to. DEI has infected virtually every campus in North America. You can't practically blacklist every institution that has gone woke. Instead, you need to develop some method of identifying and avoiding individual applicants who have allowed themselves to become indoctrinated as useful idiots. A collectivist reaction to the threat that collectivism poses to you and your business is at best ill considered. Try to develop a vetting process that favors those who embrace enlightenment values, and to weed out those who embrace collectivism. A blacklist will not accomplish this for you. You have to do the work of structuring your screening process to support your objectives and values. Don't be lazy.

Stephen Blackwood brings to mind the late great Mortimer Adler. His aspirations are genuinely inspiring. Nature abhors a vacuum. The self immolation of the Academy is simply irreversable at this point. Far better to start from scratch with a principled mission, administration, funders, students, and founding faculty. Such an institution will remain on course for as long as the founding faculty remain in position. The risk comes when these courageous and committed people pass on the torch. This is what became of The Evergreen State College. When the founding faculty had all passed on, lunatics took their place. A parallel change in direction occurred at St. John's College in Maryland when the founders, Barr and Buchanan, passed away. In this case the college became ossified as faculty settled into the comfort of specializing in one single aspect of the great books program instead of rotating through the entire canon as was intended. This institution became a sort of living museum, which is a tragedy. These two institutions were founded with the intention of rethinking, reanimating, and revolutionizing higher education. TESC was born of the cultural conflicts of the Vietnam Era and the Cold War. St. John's College was born of the moribund tertiary nature of higher education in the interwar years (between WW1 and WW2). There are lessons to be learned from the successes and failures of these two radical experiments. It is important that the work being done at Ralston and the handfull of other institutions of higher education be virulent and contageous, to borrow terms from our unfortunate recent collective nightmare.

Yes, the market for those skills will fluctuate from time to time. But those are true skills. Those skills can get him a house one day, even if he builds/renovates it himself. I remember standing the Quad a bit south of 116th start looking at the names on Butler Library and realising that after a couple of years reading the work of those thinkers I understood why I had been asked to read them. Not simply so I would be exposed to the roots of Western Civilisation, but because my teachers and my university understood that the best they could was try to find the brightest kids they could gather together and expose them to those thinkers in the hope that when it came our turn and we had to face what our elders knew they could not predict, we would have the necessary mental and moral equipment to find our way. I got it. I was just one of many dice thrown upon the table subject to chance which, as Cicero said, “ happeneth to them all”. Wager accepted. I’m 81 and can only thank divine providence that I did not crap out. It was a near run thing, but I’ll pass Steven Blackwood’s death bed challenge. I may suffer significantly and turn my face to the wall in the end, but I have no reason to curse God.

While St. John's College is the oldest college in the USA, the "Program" that Barr and Buchanan implemented there is not that old. These two founders chose St. John's College because it presented itself as an opportunity. As a traditional college, St. John's was financially failing. The Program breathed new life into that campus. But, it has remained marginalized as an institution. They added a campus in Santa Fe, NM a few decades ago, but have had little impact on other institutions aside from the few that have adopted a two year program of study inspired by the Great Books. St. John's is ossified. It is something of a living museum. I spent a year there. There are a lot of smug and comfortable tutors there, and a handful of truly great thinkers. Perhaps if they had been successful in their bid to be part of the Claremont College system the Program might have had more impact...

Sorry guys, but no. They're just more people who think their way is the "right way." The whole point of an advanced education was to firstly, to have a shared body of knowledge and not "reinvent the wheel". The next was to be able to communicate and share ideas with other people around the world who had diverse backgrounds, beliefs and values -- but the same foundation of knowledge. From that they can all choose and build what they believe is best for themselves. You don't get to tell them what is best.

They had to get the most college professor looking person on campus to represent the school. lol he’s probably an acting professor acting as a real professor.

Kinda' disappointed. I watched the entire video and never heard the value concept. Would have been more effective to hear the "elevator pitch" about the school - then - the word salad. We've all heard about Hillsdale (for example) but Ralston "specialness" never revealed in any detail.

Well … this is interesting but I’m not hearing about the “Thrust” of this College. What type/sort of Curriculum are they offering? What are they expecting their students to have as tools for their futures once they graduate. I’d note that I AM NOT a proponent of a “Liberal” Education of ANY Kind … Not “Classic” not “Current”. I tried repeatedly to enter college but was unable to skip past a 2 year “requirement” for “Liberal Arts” which was simply regurgitated material that should’ve been learned in High School. It is said that LA makes a person “well rounded” but I know almost all of that and find people with Degrees in Liberal Arts to be stultifyingly stupid but think they “know” something of value.

The key indication of mastery of the canon is humility. Clearly, you have not achieved that level of deep understanding. The remedial basic education courses required at Universities are NOT "The Liberal Arts". And, practically all Universities offer some method of testing out of those remedial courses, or leapfrogging right over them. Doing so typically requires engaging in conversation with professors of courses that have these remedial courses as "prerequisites". It is incumbent on the student to learn to navigate around such roadblocks. It's not that hard if you try. You can even do this at the Community College level. Professors have latitude in this regard. The Liberal Arts prepare you to learn, to read, to comprehend, and to apply knowledge in order to achieve results in spite of obstacles and barriers. Only a handfull of colleges in the world even offer a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts. Thousands offer technical degrees that they arbitrarily identify as sub-categories of Liberal Arts. As if the notion of splitting knowledge up between a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science track had any real meaning. It doesn't. But, what do I know. I have a Bachelor of Arts in the Liberal Arts. LOL.

Nice idea, though not sure how they will prevent corruption once big money is involved with their university. Many Ivy league unis started out well and ended up corrupt.

Far too many colleges/universities pushed theory in courses, as opposed to logical, real life circumstances. Fundamentals of education go beyond ideology, philosophy, arts and activism. I believe in purposeful deconstructing for meaningful problem solving. However, we cannot repeat those same errors on a different platform. Though well-meaning, such is short-sighted. Interestingly enough, the fundamental purpose of many of the ivy league universities was, in fact, RELIGIOUS institutions. And still is. Their activities indicate they worship another god, different from the One they were originally dedicated to. History speaks to it. Current events speak to it. Note how little this is being mentioned. I wonder if young people were to once again discover a higher purpose in God, their Creator, and their ability to find satisfaction in working with their hands, we'd see vastly different results! We'd also see greater socio-economic mobility and less crime. You know that saying "idle hands are the devil's tool"? That. There are studies to show that anxiety & other mental health conditions increased among students as thought lessons increased and hands-on lessons decreased. American history also shows that when slaves were emancipated, the ones to escape poverty were those who were trained in a vocation or skill. These are reasons to seriously consider VOCATIONAL TRAINING. There is great dignity to be found in working with your hands. Young people need to learn, embrace and run wildly successful & free with this reality, rather than have ideologues programming them to believe otherwise.

It's a liberal arts college with free speech. Once you get a degree, what job can the graduate get in the real world? I did a 5-year apprenticeship to learn a trade. Just curious 🤔
