Out of universe, the planet is named after the Kalevala, which is Finlands national epic poem, a collection of stories passed down for 3000 years. The Kalevala is actually what inspired J.R.R. Tolkien to write the lord of the rings and hobbit books. The planet also looks a lot like Finland and house Kryze’s colors, blue and white, are the colors of the Finnish flag. I’m part Finnish which is why this excites me so much but I would recommend looking into the Kalevala even if you’re not Finnish, it’s an amazing collection of very old mythology and traditions and it’s completely free, you can find the whole thing on the internet

The planet looks nothing like Finland, but yes, it's amazing to finally see Kalevala in Star Wars. I recommend checking out 'Kalevala laulettuna' on KZbin where two guys sing the Kalevala. The videos are even subbed in English.

Really interesting to see that the Mandalorians still persist *within* the Mandalore solar system, even if the main planet is scorched. Guess this fits in with how Bo-Katan says that Mandalore “always survives.” I wonder if this would potentially mean that there are survivors of the destruction of Mandalore living on the other surrounding planets and moons. Maybe the clans will be deadlocked into some kind of clan war at the end of the season?

I always chuckle when I hear the name Kalevala because it's the name of the Finnish national epic and that's the first thing that comes to my mind. Same with all the Mandalorians called Vizsla, because that's a Hungarian dog breed, great hunting dogs and very friendly. Wait... are Mandalorians Finno-Ugric?

You know what I found surprising: the way Bo-Katan was sitting in her throne on Kalevala is very similar to how Maul sat on the throne on Mandalore after he killed Pre Vizsla and took control of Death Watch.

Clan wren could have also scattered after the purge and some (Ursula and Tristan) returned to their world after the empire was defeated. Turning their back on bo katan since she doesn't have the darksaber.

My first thought when seeing it was to ask why the Mandalorians care about the planet Mandalore so specifically. It's not even the original Mandalore and they could settle somewhere else now that the Empire is gone and rebuild.

The show is hinting that one of the themes is about stepping aside from tradition, but it is still not clear. It might in the end re-establish it as the thing Mando finds comfort in and unites people behind. I would not like it because I see great storytelling in him liberating himself from it, but at this moment we just wish that he steps away from his sect.

Its absolutely hinting at that. Which is great when you think about the fact that Luke embraced tradition and that's why his Jedi Order failed. Din has the opportunity to make something new and start a new tradition. I love when they do parallels like this.

the devotion to stupid rituals that both sides have is really not that great of a plot to follow. who cares about helmets? oh, its their little cult? not great to have our main character be a brainwashed member of a cult. who cares about the dark saber? as you said, satine led the mandalorians without it at some point, and bo katan got the dark saber without a fight when she got it from sabine wren in rebels. now we're supposed to believe that its really really important to her. its all a bit lame.
