First of, the only rule in patchwork/quilting is, there are no rules. Secondly. it is not always possible to press to the dark side and it will not make the sky fall in if you have to press to the light side. You've chosen a wonderful way of being creative and if you enjoy it only half as much as I do, youll be having a lot of fun. One bit of advice if I may, there are a lot of quilt groups on the internet and if I were you, I would join a few. Not only are they often inspiring with the posts of their work, but they usually give great advice when you have a problem or question. Good luck Barry.

Hey Barry, I applaud you for diving in to the world of quilty things in your retirement. I too am a beginner quilter , am retired and love the learning that happens and the problem solving. I have 2 finished quilts, one baby sized and the other a kid sized quilt. I found a woman on KZbin named "Googie" in Northern England who makes quilts for a childrens' charity using fabric panels of kids' story books and instead of turning them into fabric story books she "frames" (for lack of a better term) the pages with different 2 inch strips of fabric, ending up with a fun quilt. So that is what I enjoy making. And I also applaud you for exploring what brings you joy! Can't wait to see what you do with that Juki! Cheers from Minnesota Barry

Welcome to quilting fold! As a former electrician you will apreciate how technical the construction of a quilt can be ("measure twice cut once" applies here too). You will also eventually learn how a design is "wired together" and "what colors of the piecing wires" have to go together to make your design light up! Okay, clearly I am not an electrician so will spare you any further attempts at electrical and quilting puns, LOL!! I am 20 years into a hobby that I started just because I thought I might like to try this for a project or two. The empowering of women is perfectly complemented when a man takes up a craft that has been considered a female domain. Art is art… and I think it’s going to bring you a lot of satisfaction. You have the right attitude. I am 78 this year and started sewing two years ago when I got fed up with not being able to find sweatpants and jogging pants with a fly. I learned how to sew sweatpants with a fly after I learned to make my own pants. Since then I haven’t looked back and am just now beginning to branch into quilts. I had a favourite painting by a local artist that I used as a point of inspiration for a small sampler art quilt and now it hangs by the painting… and receives many compliments. Good luck with your quilting but don’t forget to take lots of breaks for walks… it helps keep up the energy you need for the challenge of quilting. 👍🏻

You are going to love this quilting journey. I started later in life and have been quilting now for 12 years. I was immediately hooked. I guess I’m pretty obsessed by this point. I sew daily. It helps pass the time and makes me feel productive. I never sell. I only gift to my family. You might find scrappy quilts are super fun. I love repurposing/upcycling items. Blue jeans, blankets for the batting just as examples. Also regarding pressing toward the dark side….yes, it’s a good rule, but you will find on your journey you may want to press seams open for a flatter seam. I have the accuquilt. Shoulder arthritis now, so no option. Also check into the Missouri star rotary cutter, it has bearings and is super easy along with the Missouri star blades. Get them on sale and you won’t regret it. I have tried literally every rotary cutter and rotary cutter blades out there. I have only in the last 8 months discovered the Missouri star products and it was a game changer for me.

Your message made me smile. Sewing has been my happy place since I was 12, and I was bit by the quilting bug in 2021. Sewing and quilting are both fun and productive in my retirement years. Best of luck to you in your adventure 😊

I saw you for the first time today and was enchanted. You are so frank and up front about your passion and I look forward to seeing more of your videos. I really related to the not sitting in your lounger doing nothing after retirement, because that is exactly what I did. Now I regret it! My quilting is coming along though as I try to make myself healthier.

You sound exactly like me. I said to myself - I’m not going out this way and there is more in life than watching reruns of old tv shows. Have you made very many quilts? I can’t wait to finish a small charm blanket I made and get it quilted.

Welcome. I am 61 and have a short left arm from birth. Been sewing since I was 10. Started on an old singer treadle sewing machine. I love sewing of all kinds. my favorite is scrappy. I watch for sales or market place, giving scraps away or for cheap. My hubby and my sons are my biggest fans. I have found in the last 5 years or so, that when I put 2 fabric squares together, I check the grain of the fabric. making sure the squares are both laying the same direction. It makes sewing them together so much easier. another tip I have found that is helpful is to have leaders and enders. it helps the tails of thread not to get lost and it makes sure your stitching is correct. I just bought a baby lock Ballad 2 years ago on, no interest financing. Absolutely love it. I have put 850,000 stitches on it. Its a work horse. Good luck in your new venture

I started quilting after a bought a quilt shop. I didn’t have time to quilt because we were so busy selling machines and fabric. So after 7 years we moved from Michigan to North Carolina and I’ve been quilting like mad ever since. I am now 70 years old and I try to cut, piece or sew every day. It is stress relieving and creative. I like putting colors together and learning something new with each new pattern. Keep doing it! There are probably thousands of channels to get ideas from on KZbin. They are great at giving you ideas of what to do with your stash! Good luck with your channel! nice to see a man doing quilting, you’re not the first! I subscribed, by the way.

Welcome to the quilting world. I’m fairly new to is as well. I’m good a piecing but the quilting part I’m learning.

I think that is understandable. The quilting part doesn’t look as easy as the piecing part?

Thank you for sharing your very sincere and joyful experience with us. I am also retired, and sewing and quilting have brought many moments of relaxation and satisfaction to my life. I could be sewing all day and am enjoying it so much that i don't even think about food. You will love your JUKI! I love that sewing machine so much, it is so consistent and problem free, the best money I ever spent. When I was sewing on a Brother sewing machine it was constant problems and frustration. My best wishes for you, your retirement and the growth of your channel!

Hello Barry, just jump in with both feet. I thought that piecing and quilting was so intimidating but now I realized that, although it’s no longer intimidating, it is challenging. That is what I need, something that challenges my brain, my creativity, which I thought I had none, and it is very rewarding. One thing that I keep telling myself, saw it on one of the videos on her machine, is perfection is a completed quilt. By the way, it took me five years after retiring to figure out what I needed that would give me joy. Keep on going forward!

Well good luck on your art . I think this is wonderful. You will feel that you have completed a quilt the love and joy fir your new hobby. I think you getting a juki is the most fabulous recession you could of made. I am jealous of that alone. I have a pfaff and it works just fine but I see all the people quilting on them and if I was younger (72) I would definitely being getting one. You made such a great move on that. Happy stitching from north michigan. I will be watching.

It's a great past time , I started out with sewing by fixing up old sewing machines mostly old Singers which amazingly were very well made machines in their day. Now I am trying a new idea ,I am going to try my hand at weaving so I purchased a loom , Anyways Juki makes a excellent sewing machine, both industrial or home model. Good luck in your new hobby

Welcome to our club! :-). It's already a joy to see someone from a completely different background start sewing. I'm a retired realtor and Ive always enjoyed working with my hands. It's very therapeutic. I still do a bit of painting and drawing but a couple years ago I began making slow stitch projects and I was hooked. I also began making various quilt blocks on my brand new sewing machine. I bought the Singer Heavy Duty one and so far it's perfect for my needs. So, welcome to our retired club of sewers. Looking forward to seeing what you're going to make. Cheers from sunny Florida.

Welcome to cutting up perfectly good material just to sew it back together again. Made no sence to me at first and now I'm hooked. 3 years in at 57. Number 1 tip? Focus on how you finish a seam...needs to be the same quarter inch as the rest of the seam. Best to you and I'll enjoy watching your channel.

Quilting has so many branches, you can take classes and meet other people, collect machines, learn to repair or maintain machines, go to international quilt shows and see all the different types of quilting out there. Especially at an international quilt show. Plus, you can purchase all kinds of things you didn’t know you needed at a big quilt show. There are many ways to do various techniques. There are also some great teachers on KZbin, like MANSEWING, Rob Appell. Minki Kim, the last homely house, just to name a few. There are also quilting guilds where you can learn a lot about quilting.
@barrysquilts3 күн бұрын
I’ve been watching Rob Appell and the Quilting Cowboy but I’ll have to look up the other one. I’ve already been asked to go to Paducah this Spring to their show

Thank you - I just pieced a charm quilt for Christmas. I’ll probably make a video about it this week. I’m probably going to straight line quilt it for my first one.
@michellegarraway22142 күн бұрын
@barrysquilts Straight line quilting looks great. I do that alot. Try the presser foot width away on each side of the block seam. It looks good. Plus, stitch in the ditch is not as easy as they say. It's very easy to stitch crooked. LOL, however you quilt it, it will be beautiful!
