"..you don't hear the box as much.." That's absolutely true. I have a pair of Falcon Acoustics LS3/5As. I'm driving them with a Cayin Audio US A-88T MK 3 on the 8 ohm tap. Earlier versions of this amp had a 16 ohm tap but not the MK 3. Still, the sound is consistently open, warm and immersive. Nice review. Thanks.

Thanks a lot for the very informative and helpful reply. I think that one of the biggest issue with human voice is that is difficult to cover well all the human voice freq range with just one drive. Lately i have become aware of the phase coherence issue. To have a crossover point inside the voice range poses a big challenge ,,, however i do not know about the xover of this speakers. But i have the feeling that a wide band driver could be even better for voice reproduction.

@@RennieAsh Hi thanks for the info. Then there is another problem with music with high content in the lowest freq ... IMD. These monitors should be cut below 100 Hz for best results. i think that the BBC monitor woofer would be a great midrange. I think that Spendor and Harbeth do something similar.
@RennieAsh
@RennieAsh 4 жыл бұрын
@@gino3286 It's definitely a sound some people like. Yes it would probably do well in a 3-way, though I'd possibly distance the large woofer baffle from the mid-tweet box so you keep that clear vocal. ____ | | ____ | | _________ | | | | _________

@@RennieAsh yes i like your approach a lot. I have a friend who loves deeply the ls3/5a and has a pair made i do not remembe kef or rogers ? he built a subwoofer (two one per channel) for them. I found the result really excellent. He also built a passive xover but unfortunately i did not remember which cuts it adopted. Small woofers sound so much cleaner (i.e. less distorted) when dispensed from reproducing the lower Hz like below 100 Hz ... and they can sound also louder. But a sub is needed of course. Thanks again and kind regards, gino

Hi, I like your review on the LS3/5A, is there a big difference.if you use 8 ohm amplifier vs 16ohm. Does it really effect the sound. I am considering an LS3/5A but 16ohm tube amps are very expensive, also my concern.is my power.amp is rated at 300 watts at 8 ohm, will it be to much if it plays 15 ohm LS3/5A. My pre amp is tube, my power.amp is solid state. My concern is will the sound be noticeably uglier with 8 ohm, next is my amplifier over kill, and is a solid state amp with tube preamp good combination match this, or must it be all tube. Thanks and good review

I had a pair of harbeth p3esr and I really miss them after watching this video. There are still many speakers I want to hear but I could see going back to an ls3/5a for a while or even keeping a pair long term. They have a unique sound that I really enjoy but there are still a few more speakers that might compete that I'd like to try, like the full range open baffle stuff from GR research or a pair of the bigger driver Tannoys.

thomas locatell Yeah I have been watching "Tech Tuesday" with owner Danny of GR at New Record Day.Were on same page.Maybe Tekton but other outside of the box (and these BBC :S3/5's are definition of that term) would be GR.Pure Audio Project,or Spatial Audio.Yes Devore and Vandesteen still some of my faves but lower cost and benefits of open baffle given the right room is intriguing

@@charleskatz2606 yep we're definitely on the same page, all great speakers you bring up. I love the tech Tuesday's with Danny that Ron is doing. That is actually what made me remember about the GR research stuff, like I said before there are just so many great speakers to try you can forget about some stuff for a while. The reason I'm leaning towards GR research though is because of the possible value, their diy kits are a ton of speaker for the money. I know you have to put your own time into assembling and finishing it but I will enjoy that part of it and then you know the quality of the build to. I'm looking into building the NX-Otica kit with an automotive grade paint and clear finish on them.

I miss mine too. The P3ESR is great for vocals, piano, saxophone, violin and many other instruments etc. But I must admit, they don’t have the extended highs that gives the airy sound. But then again, with the extended highs it will mess up the naturalness of vocals.

@@lumntoob999 Yeah.I must say that while Tekton's Eric Alexander might be a good designer the Parts Express stuff he put's in seems a bit crappy.With large cabinets to shipp you have to cut cost somewhere.I would like to hear the DI's,DI montiors,and SET 15's (he he has vids on them) but again not sure about parts.Compare that to Pure Audio Project where you get basic frame,mid and bass drivers but a choice of rethm,voxativ etc plus and open architecture and you have upgrade path.Watched OCD Hifi guy do simple mods like adding silver wire on Klipsch and it seems to pay off.Having choice and path is good.Plus with GR like you said get the plans cut 'em yourself or get the flats delivered has to cut material and shipp costs.I like crazy high end stuff like Avantgarde horns and own an EAR 834 int but got stuff when I was flush and now think companies like Schiit or Spatial Audio,GR or some other kit companies are where it's at because 1/2" thick aluminum face plates and Lexus prices are a waste

@@hushpuppykl I agree they are not the total package but definitely unique. It's funny because they are so rediculously cheap ($73 USD on sale) but the Sony ss-cs5 is a unique speaker to, it has great vocals and really fun highs, you just need a subwoofer to have any good bass at all. I actually have them on my stands right now in place of speakers from a few hundred to over $1k and in a decent system with a decent sub they actually sound really great and have a unique sound to them. I don't know how they would sound in a system where the price of the rest of the gear matched the speakers but in a decent setup like I consider mine they sound fantastic.

These speakers were specifically designed to reproduce the main spectrum of human hearing, i.e. the human voice, in a "small' room/environment. Very very good velvety smooth sound, especially with human voices (Adele and Jennifer Warnes would sound like they are there singing in front of you) and majority of jazz music instruments eg. piano, saxophone, guitar, violin etc. But way Over rated. They don't have enough speed and attack and would struggle with more complex musical pieces and in larger rooms!!.
