...and his knowledge gained through the deconstruction and replacement process. It was riveting KZbin viewing and contributed to the rise in his subscriber base. I likened Rich in the same way as Truman Burbank with everyone watching to see if he'd succeed in his quest to repair the P90D or get sucked into the money pit that is the repair of salvaged cars. I trust he feels better from his video catharsis.

Love you man, but you are missing one of the biggest gains. Not only did you give yourself a one of a kind education of tesla going through all that shit. You shared it with so many people who learned from you. People who don't have a youtube safety net that helps fund their fuckups. Even if you don't intend to even if things are going well, doing this every so often intentionally can be a beneficial experience. That being said, if you need a free pair of hands for a few days to help off set some costs let me know.

Will, I converted a 1986 Mazda B2000 to DC EV. 8 grand for parts, not counting labor, and the batteries (at the time) lead acid - are WORTHLESS. Now if I want to get it going again, I’ve STILL got a 1986 Mazda with no heat, no AC, and I’ve got to get batteries and a BMS. Anyone want it? 9 inch netgain, Curtis controller (the one that whines at low current/slow speed) - I’m thinking of pulling the guts, putting it in a newer body... who am I kidding... - One thing I did learn (I live in South Carolina)... If you don’t have a 400 degree (F) heat source in front of and under the passenger cabin, AC isn’t a MUST, its merely a ‘nice to have, but I’m OK without it’. (I love your channel too, Will!)

More people need to see this because there isn't enough transparency with other rebuild channels. The amount of people thinking they're saving 10's of thousands of dollars by buying salvage cars have no clue about the realities of a rebuild. I grew up around rebuilding wrecked cars. I've done 5 myself. Of those 5 I only made money on 1. I broke even on 2 and lost money on 2. It doesn't matter how much you plan for or how smart you think you are, you will get burned eventually. If you can't do the work yourself and do it properly then don't even waste your time. You're backwards before you even start if you think you can pay someone to do it for you.

I think that your mistake was buying a FLOOD damaged vehicle. It's one thing to repair a salvage car that was in an accident, but water damage is something that is not worth trying to fix because it causes so many problems throughout the entire vehicle.
@Maybe-So
@Maybe-So 4 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking a ‘flood damaged vehicle’ doesn’t have body damage. So, in theory, you take the good parts out of a wrecked vehicle (carpet isn’t damaged much by a wreck!) - and put it in the flood damaged one. Until..... you have the problems that Rich had...

Rich, the sheer numbers regarding dollars just blows me away. I just bought a 2020 Chrysler Pacifica totally optioned out, for $44k (out the door with 7 yr 75,000 mile warranty) and literally - that is a fortune to a guy like me. I have no idea who is buying all of these Tesla's because honestly, most people (that I know at least) can only afford $40k or less regarding a new vehicle. These Tesla's will never make the $3 to $6k used car market - which is the price range many lower middle income to working poor purchase from. Electric hybrids (the Prius) are within this price range (and can be worked on by independent shops). I can get a decent 2007 Prius with 320,000 miles for $1,200.... that runs good. Nobody wants an older Leaf due to the range issue. Until electric cars get into the ICE used car cost structure (for used cars & independent repair shops), electric cars will remain only available to the upper middle class & the rich (no pun intended). The reason why I watch your channel, is hoping you get enough interest in the electric garage out there to bring electric into the mainstream (hoping other independent repair shops see what you've done and start doing the same themselves). Otherwise, Tesla's remain but a dream to many people like me (as we cannot afford used electric cars that need repairs that are in the thousands every time something goes wrong). Sorry to see that this Model X build went south on you, but it made for excellent content (and others will learn from your mistake at least). Keep on keepin on with your channel, it gives me hope that one day, I may be able to not only own a electric car - but can take it somewhere to get repaired inexpensively.

WOW Rich, way to go!! I felt like I was watching an episode of The curse of oak island. Where 90% of the episode is regurgitated from previous episodes, 8% of it was questionable new content but probably just deleted from previous episodes because it wasn't very interesting anyway and the last 2% of the "New" content was still questionable but very informative and taught me to never buy a Tesla and stick to building Honda's. Either way I enjoy watching your highs and lows in this rebuild game. We Honda guys call it "BROKE". Broke lives, broke relationships, broke wallets, all because we love working on broke ass cars. It's not a hobby it's a lifestyle!! Keep up the broke ass work!!

You, my friend are a wealthy man!! Look at how people work to help you with these projects. Look how your family tolerate your observations. Look how God has blessed you with the tenacity, persistence, and enormous talent to tackle these seemingly impossible goals to rebuild these cars with so little support from Tesla. You, my friend, have a Wonderful Life, and don’t even know you’re the toast of the town and a big man in Teslaville. Money can be made again, but the respect you’ve cemented for yourself is priceless. Thank you for all you do!! God bless you and yours. I think you should drive that Model X till the wheels fall off...or until someone offers to buy it off you for a break even price. Cheers, and Merry Christmas!!

Great video Rich, very well explained the potential pitfalls of salvage rebuilds. I've done 5 Teslas, two MX. With a '16 P90D, all was great, no hidden surprises. With an '18 100D, looked like only front quarter. Has hidden frame damage. 6 months later, still in process of repairing, and the cost is over 10k more than I first planned.

I know someone who sells salvage vehicles. It was very lucrative after Superstorm Sandy. All flood vehicles. He sold them all, buying them very cheap making bank on each vehicle. Any salvage title vehicle is a big risk. If that vehicle was in a flood, best advice is look for a different vehicle that wasn’t in a flood. All those customers all had issues with their flood vehicles. He flipped them quick for a reason.
