What Tuchel showed at Chelsea is that he's a manager who doesn't need time to assemble a team and that's ideal for international football where it is hard to create a system with players used to totally different philosophies from the youth levels, and where there is no time to train together and try things. Tuchel was appointed by Chelsea less than 50 hours before a match. A team that was leaking goals was supposed to play high flying Wolverhampton. He tweaked the formation and Chelsea got a result while playing more compact and comprehensive football. That's what England needs. A nation blessed with hundreds of players with different qualities who can easily be assembled into something special.

One thing that makes Tuchel better suited to international football than other elite managers, such as Pep, is that he has walked into clubs, looked at the players and thought: how can I make these specific players work well together? Not to say Pep isn't also great at problem solving but he'll tend to have an idea of how he wants to play and have players bought who fit that plan. Tuchel, though, is very comfortable working with the players that are available, something not all coaches can do, but is vital for international football. He also isn't wedded to a particular style of play. He is kind of like a younger Ancelotti in these respects. Unlike England of yore with a 442, or classically the Dutch with the 433, England don't really have a formation they are wedded to these days, so are very malleable to the inventiveness of Tuchel. As a Scot, I'm a bit concerned!

@pineappletreetrunk52613 ай бұрын
@@spresso007 Not being patronising but I assume you mean sacked. Let's go through his "leaving" of clubs then: Mainz - left of his own accord. Dortmund - he fell out with the board for many reasons, but primarily because they kept selling their best players, despite saying they wouldn't. Tuchel wanted Dortmund to challenge, and you can't do so when your best players keep leaving. He was also unhappy with the handling of the bus bombing when they were forced to play by UEFA and the club hierarchy. They thus painted him as a "difficult figure". PSG - unblemished league record really and first coach to take them to CL final. As Mr Cleary says, they were on fire pre covid though. Fell out with Leonardo because that man is a dick. PSG decided to take the sporting director's side. Chelsea - took over the Lampard shitshow and within 6 months had totally revamped them and won a CL. Was sacked because the new owners are insane. Bayern Munich - took over a troublesome season but managed to win Bundesliga (albeit Dortmund chucked it). Watch the vid for why things went wrong. Lost league to a ridiculous historical run by Leverkusen. BM downed tools by April for Stuttgart to overtake them. New board had their own vision moving forward. So, Tuchel has never really been sacked for footballing reasons (aside from perhaps last year but, again, see vid for that) or any issues with players. It was usually down to issues at board level, often about transfer policy. If you look at the (say last 20 year) history of these clubs, Tuchel is not in unsuccessful company with regards to being sacked (Emery, Conte, Ancelotti, etc). But this is great for England because there is no transfer policy to disagree over. The "direction" of the team stylistically is something he will have total control over.

I haven't followed him much, but from what little I saw of him at Bayern he looked really tired. IIRC he went through a divorce after the CL win, then had to almost single-handedly deal with the PR side of the Chelsea ownership situation in 2022, before being randomly, and unfairly sacked by his new boss who knew nothing about managing a football club. All this in just over a year. Then goes to Bayern, who were also in a boardroom mess and still managed to get them to an incorrect offside call from the CL final which they would've been favourites to win. So maybe this is the sort of job he needs. A lot of rest, then when the international breaks start he has the rushed time to drill them into becoming a proper tournament team.

Combine this with ball playing defenders, knowing that he has options among Stones, Colwill, Ben White (if Tuchel convinces him for selection), etc. and it has the making of a very, very good side.

Tuchel is an excellent appointment and except from behind the times people it should be greeted as such. He’s got a phenomenal record and learning that he believes in individual expression is comforting, he will accommodate our many cooks and the broth will keep. The priority for English football development always has to be players, and I feel that Tuchel’s methods will be something the FA can learn from, which I’ve wanted us to do for years. I also think he’ll bring the best out in players. I think with Dier we’ve seen he can give players a new lease of life too, I hope he does the same with Mount and also gets Wharton, a ball playing #6, to his high, high potential. Youth development and league progression is essential which I worry the PL is stagnating on, which I’m not happy about. One way to beat that is to make our players more tactically intelligent which Tuchel’s methods can help on a wider scale. As I say, delighted to have Tuchel, and as for English coaches, the game 20 years ago should’ve been rewarding great tacticians rather than media manipulators like Redknapp and Allardyce and perhaps ours would be in a better position. Our players have lost out from that too, much more. While Europe has made strides, we’ve taken baby steps. Howe should spearhead the catch up of English coaches but it will take time. He’s got much more to achieve in the club game as do several of the others with potential.

There was a balance to the play and the interchanges particularly of the wing backs (1 would invert the other then would got wide) and the 2 10s. There remains in the inherent weakness of our playmaking pivot and left back area, problems Tuchel will have to solve. In the heat of the USA a deep lying pivot could be crucial. Seeing your research on his other jobs really helped cement my huge repsect for Tuchel. The mainstream media will have a ready-made scapegoat if we do not win. Great video as usual Adam and Tuchel definitely has a lot of approaches on his CV that'd suit the absolute stack of English attacking talent at his disposal. My only concern is, and you mentioned it yourself, he _coached_ these teams to play with two 10s. Time coaching isn't a luxury national team managers get to enjoy, so the press and fans will have to get comfy with him using friendlies (and I include Nations League in that as glorified friendlies) to coach and experiment, if the brief is indeed to win 2026. He's also got some decisions to make, I don't think you're building a world cup winning team around 2026 Harry Kane. I respect the FA going for a "we can't waste this talent" throw of the dice in taking Tuchel with the brief to win 2026, but it really feels like the best time to do that was after whiffing Euro 2020. Losing Euro 2020 was unforgivable with the squad, circumstances and honestly, quality of opposition. That should have been the trigger to hire a manager to actually get the best out of the talent available. The second best time is now, hopefully Watkins or Solanke or someone can step up to fill Kane's shoes by then.
@dennisgoatimer10793 ай бұрын
Watkins can more then fill Kane's shoes with Solanke as his understudy not that I wouldn't mind playing a two up top with them two as Tuchel did with Cavani and Mbappé that's honestly what I've wanted with Kane instead of Solanke in a 4-2-2-2 for a long time now.
@Whoami6913 ай бұрын
Yeano. Unfortunatly both Watkins and Solanke aren't far behind kane in terms of age. we are lacking a tried and true striker. I mean we had one - Greenwood - but that ship set sail. Without him we have no real up and coming strikers. I truly think the BEST way to get the best out of kane is to whack watkins up there with him. He needs support - Spurs and Bayern had this figured out, but england do not. Kane needs the support to be at his best and with England he is always forced back to defend when he should be the target man - it leaves our counter attacks severely lacking.

This. As Mr Clery said in a previous video before the last Euros England tried to build around Bellingham, but that didn’t suit Foden. To my untrained eye they should have built around Foden’s Man City role & let the more adaptable Bellingham fit in around that system.

Agreed. And this is why i was a bit doubtful about Pep’s suitability. Tuchel’s ability to get his message across quickly is so much more valuable than Guardiola’s greater(?) tactical nous that takes a year of intense training to implement. Guardiola also has a habit of overthinking the big games, and this is before considering the potential awkwardness if Pep had any knowledge of the actions related to city’s charges if found guilty. I do think that countries over a certain size/world ranking should appoint a manager that’s eligible to play for them, but until that happens, I’m looking forward to seeing Tuchel in charge.

What i'm looking forward to is Tuchel just having qualification and the WC itself - it means he'll pick the players with a summer tournament in north america in mind... my guess is that he'll look to have a squad where he can use Kane as the first sub rather than starting him and he'll want players who know how to make the ball do the work when teams will be playing in serious heat even if they are all evening and night games to catch the european audience. There will be a few surprises but i think Pickford will be out and he'll definitely try Foden or Palmer up front with Kane coming on as a sub during qualification and i think anyone other than Kane & Stones who is already over 30 will be out - we'll need players at their physical peaks @ the WC and the beauty of Tuchel's appointment is that he does not have to worry about the future or upsetting a couple of players by leaving them out - their chance will come again once he's gone. Tcuhel will use a system that he can slot at least 2 players into each position without losing quality - we have the player pool to do it but it probably means leaving one or two fan favourites at home.

I wasn't excited about Tuchel before this video. Now, I think he will bring dynamic management to a group who just need a shove in the right direction. Great analysis again.

I've been critical of quite a few of your videos, usually the ones which are trying to make out the England teams of the noughties were somehow amazing, but I found a lot to agree with in this video.

You are a master class. I watched 1 video and subscribed. Chelsea fan here. This appointment definitely made some Chelsea fans happy 😂😂.

I like his appointment. He is probably the first manager who always wants to win in any role he takes up. Not likely to be a manager who will treat the England job as if it's some sort of UN Ambassador role. He has this hunger that I like.

Can we expect that hell be able to deliver this level of intricacy and dynamism in the England team during the much shorter time he has to coach them during international breaks / tournament camp?

Great video Adam, I've never looked too in detail with his previous tenures but always been familiar with him philosophy. Very interesting,

Adam, you are basically correct. Tuchel is a fantastic tactician and a Football intellectual. Pep Guardiola holds him in high regard and Tuchel has even outwitted him on the biggest stage! The only worry is that Tuchel can be a little spiky and rub people up the wrong way... With the reduced contact time that he will have with the England squads he really needs to work on his man management skills and try and simplify his instructions. Good luck to him!

Literally thought of this video after the announcement and knew I’d agree, the best possible appointment for us in my opinion

It is the best appointment of an England manager since The FA appointmented Terry Venables in 1993. The break down of how Tuchel gets his teams to play will massively suit England with the players they have got. I am very excited for the World cup now

Really looking forward to seeing his first squad selection, and then seeing his first lineup! The first international break of 2025 can't come quick enough 😂

I think he will be fantastic and i am super excited for what the future holds. Doesn't matter if he's German he's very humble and honourable and will give everything for the shirt so that is all that matters! Plus he's a tactical genius and knockout expert.. What else do you want? Couldn't of picked anyone more suited to our current setup and ambitions!

I have to be honest, I never liked Tuchel for some reason. But with this video you opened my eyes and at least I can respect him and give him credit for what he did and will do further. Wish him the best for the England job.

Huge positive - Tuchel has worked with the very players England will face in WCs and Euros. My only caveat is are the current English generational talent intelligent enough to work in a different way to their club football. That’s the biggest challenge Tuchel will face.

We've been moaning about England being negative, being vulnerable at the back, being unable to press, being unable to keep the ball, not scoring enough goals and not gelling as a team despite the ream of players labelled as 'generational talents.' Tuchel has, seemingly, managed to get all of those things from his teams - at some point or another, and sometimes all at once. I'm optimistic he can make England play with that little bit extra confidence and swagger that we're all craving. I'd have loved to see what Pep could do, but this absolutely feels like an upgrade in the tactical and coaching department. And his resume is vastly more impressive than either Howe or Potter. I'm feeling surprisingly good about his appointment.

Video on Nottingham Forest NOW!! Elanga, Hundson-Odoi, Gibbs-White, Anderson, Wood. That team is filled with good players.

I like the video but think you could have gone further. A video analysing the possible ins and outs for the England team would be very interesting. Who keeps their place? Who gets benched? Who might not be in the plans entirely? Who could have a new role?

I'll be very happy to see England play attacking football and going for it. Too many times I felt I was watching paint dry under Southgate. That's not a knock against achievements, rather that's how it felt as a fan watching the game. There are other issues I have with is tenure, but it's history now. So looking forward to seeing what Tuchel is able to get out of the players available and if he'll be sticking with the same ones regardless.

Some good news for English football, a pleasant surprise. Hope he'll win some silverware in the new position. But also, he's somewhat a difficult character, so will see how it will be with the players
@SkyHighTigre753 ай бұрын
Has to be said as a Chelsea fan watching his teams, they just had an air of calm. Even when 3-0 down to West Brom, there was no air of concern, no lack of composure. Tuchel himself always looks like he knows exactly what will happen. If you look at his UCL record he is incredibly unlucky not to have 1 or 2 more UCLs, or at least 2 more finals appearances
@IEPerez19943 ай бұрын
I was an avid follower of his dortmund side. Pretty much my way of seeing football aligns with that specific brand of play. Was beyond excited when he was announced at chelsea, and will be forever grateful for his UCL run. If i was an england supporter, i wouldnt be too exited atm. The tactical flexibility this analysis perfectly demonstrates, is far behind him. He’s simply not that coach anymore, and has become stagnant. His team reflect quicky. There’s little rotation, the players become cautious in possession, and as a result become predictable. It simply reminds me too much of the last moments of southgate, even down to the preferred system. Hope to be wrong, we all deserve to see this generation at its maximum expression
