Now Yonex Aerobite : the main needs higher tension (thicker gauge) and the cross lower tension (thinner gauge) because of two different strings; thus in general you could modify your string tensions as you wish to get the max sweet spot you need it … success with your channel and greeting from Indonesia (thanks a lot for your racket reviews and I enjoyed a lot especially after stop playing badminton for years)

Unfortunately, only one person, Ronald Dekker, wrote the correct comment. He doubted - this is a great property of the human mind. He conducted the experiment. And experience has refuted all recommendations! Bravo Ronald! I've been a stringer for over 20 years . I started in 1983 string practic without a str/machine with 6 point in base. Hand made. And practice is the basis of knowledge... The same !!! load on the vertical and horizontal will inevitably lead to frame deformation from 9 hours to 3 hours. There are two main reasons. First, - inside frame, horizontal strings have a lower elastic coefficient than vertical strings. Any musician will confirm this.....string Note height different... with the same v/h lbs tention. They are shorter than the vertical ones and will compress the frame more (9h to 3h). Remember - there are always more horizontal ones. +Second, - remember the theory of arches. The l/r sides of the frame are arches with a large diameter. They are easier to deform than the lower and upper arche of rims, 12h, 6h (small diameter + Tzone near shaft). These zones will withstand the tension of 13 and 14 and 15 kg... My practice is vertical - more lbs, horizontal - less lbs. There are many more ways of analysis - mathematical, physical, geometric, chemical, etc. But they are all secondary. Ask yourself - why did Y&Ko release different strings in the same package? 5m elastic / thin for horizon and 5.5m "thick" for vertical? And another leading question - why stringers don't like them? :-) Good luck to all. Don't break the rackets. Don't get sick with the virus. Practice badminton. Think / doubt / live. This is a good video channel =BG= with racket analysis.

@Alexander Voetsky. Thanks for the comment. I think that minimizing the deformation of the racket head is the best way. Anyway, compare the size of the racket head in the vertical and horizontal directions before and after stringing. Thank you ~~ :)

This is very interesting. The elephant in the room is, of course, Yonex (and the other racket manufacturers). They have designed the frames and they know the characteristics of the material and the behaviour of the frames under stress. They could give us the answer we seek; as it is we are trying to second-guess information that they surely possess. Their stringing instructions are a big clue, but there is quite a lot of physics and material science behind those, which we can only speculate about. For example: depending on the structural properties of the frame, a requirement of the strings must be to load the frame equally all round. I suspect that frames with a more oval or less circular shape are designed for non-equal stress in the vertical and horizontal dimensions. Taking the (hypothetical - I don't know if there are any like this) case of a circular frame, we should expect a symmetrical string pattern and equal tension in the mains and crosses. Any deviation in frame shape from the perfectly circular frame should be accompanied by either an asymmetrical string pattern or stringing instructions to vary the tension across the stringbed, or a combination of the two. Hoop stress is the key parameter at play: this is the compressive force circumferentially around the racket frame, in the plane of the frame. I suspect that the designers aim to achieve equal hoop stress at all points around the frame (if they build the frame with the same cross-section all round; any variation in section should reflect expectation of or intended unequal stresses). Another example: we talk about tension in the crosses as being essentially similar to tension in the mains (I am speaking as a stringer) and we may choose to make the tensions in the crosses higher or lower than in the mains; however, when tension is pulled in a cross string the only section of that string in which the tension is equal to that being applied is the section between the machine (diablo or clamp) and the first main string. Friction between the cross string and each main during pulling surely reduces the tension felt or experienced as we move along the string, passing under and over successive main strings. Contrast this with the case of the main strings: when tension is pulled, the entire section of string inside the frame (and back to the machine) is at the same tension. (To some extent, this effect is evened out by the crosses being pulled alternately from opposite sides, but I think that if we were able to measure the tension in the cross strings adjacent to the frame immediately after stringing it would show a zig-zag pattern up and down the frame.) Anyway, I think I have already exceeded my allowance of words so I will stop here - and leave discussion of the extent to which tension changes or even equalises across the stringbed by movement of the strings during play for another post.

Great video blog > BG. Detailed characteristics and diagrams of the rackets will help you to understand and choose the required model. Any spatial design in the form of an oval (toilet seat, inflatable boat :-)), i.e. the head of the racket - regardless of the material (wood / metal / carbon / gold / basalt / etc.) has one physic pattern! An oval made of a homogeneous material is more rigid in its long component (frame from 12 to 6h), and vice versa, an oval is more susceptible to squeezing along a narrow component (frame from 3 to 9h). This is a common knowledge. There is only one conclusion - if you apply the same load (lbs) on vertical and cross strings, then the rim will deform. To maintain the oval shape, you need to apply a different load. Vertical (main) - more, horizontal (cross)- less.

Interesting thought. However, a friend and I did some testing with multiple top end rackets, stringing them mains/crosses equal, Yonex recommended method (+10% lbs and top 5 crosses equal to mains), and also +10% lbs and top half equal to mains. Stringing mains equal to crosses resulted in least frame deformation. All other methods resulted in elongated frame length wise and also smaller, mostly at the top. Especially the Yonex recommended method. Stringing them equal works. Feeling will be different. But, as you said, you can do whatever you prefer. Cheers!

@@alexandervoetsky219 Ah I see. Although I'm not yet convinced to string the mains higher than the crosses. Might give it a try sometime. My theory was always as follows: The cross string bends the mains, so the mains end up higher than strung. Many use this as an argument to string the crosses higher. However, since the crosses are shorter than the mains, it is not necessary to string them higher than mains. These two factors cancel eachother, so I string the mains equal to crosses. Result is less frame deformation. And I also like the feeling of the stringbed better, but that is personal. Stringing the crosses tighter gives a tight feeling for a longer period.

The decision to use a hybrid stringing pattern with different tensions for the main and cross strings in badminton is a matter of personal preference and playing style. It is not necessary to use a hybrid stringing pattern, and many players achieve excellent results with the same tension for both the main and cross strings. Many times it is just a placebo effect for normal players who do not know the real purpose and usage of hybrid stringing. Using a hybrid stringing pattern can provide certain benefits, such as enhanced control, reduced string movement, and improved feel during shots. The higher tension on the cross strings can help stabilize the string bed and minimize the strings' movement upon impact with the shuttlecock. This can be particularly useful for players who value precise shot placement and want to minimize any loss of control. However, it's important to note that using the same tension for both the main and cross strings is also a valid option. This can offer benefits such as increased power and a larger sweet spot. Having the same tension throughout the string bed can result in a more consistent response across the racket, which some players prefer. Ultimately, the choice between a hybrid stringing pattern and using the same tension for both the main and cross strings depends on your personal preferences, playing style, and the characteristics you value most in your racket's performance. It can be beneficial to experiment with different stringing setups to find the combination that suits you best.
