I use allies and protectorates as buffer zone when on map screen when I’m spread a bit thin and don’t want to continually protect the border

It depends on the difficulty you are playing, on easy-normal protectorates and allies can be very useful. On hard too sometimes if you take time managing diplomacy. But on very hard they will just get you into needless wars before you are ready for them and are generally not worth it imo.

Typically when I play on N/N as UK if I create Belgium, Prussia will declare war on them, major powers being liberated typically will eventually declare war, while I find they can be temporarily useful in some spots, I find them to overtime be more troublesome and useful.

Never liberate major powers. I did have one game where i played Poland and Courland conquered like 8 territories and destroyed Prussia.
