This is a great video and I'm looking forward to the others. My father was a five pack a day man. He said that cigarettes changed in the early 1970s and he stopped enjoying it. He kicked it in the early 80s, but died at age 53 in 1989. I enjoy smoking cigars and LOVE smoking pipes. The amount of nicotine varies a lot, depending on how the leaf was cured. I can smoke up to three cigars or five pipes a day, but not more than that. I also can just drop it for weeks or months without any consequence, so I'm not addicted. It's that way with the vast majority of pipe and cigar smokers. It's a nice hobby and safer than wine or scotch with similar attributes (color, flavor range and complexity, availability, cellering, literature, conventions, etc . . .) I grow tobacco in my southern Wisconsin garden and encourage people to do that. It's a beautiful plant that is easy to grow. Mine get to about six feet. Gorgeous pink flowers come in late July and attract lots of hummingbirds and butterflies. If you're a gardener, you could save the leaves and seeds to make your own insecticide for the following year. The seeds are really small, about half the size of poppy seeds, and each plant will yield more than 250,000 seeds. Some people will beat me up because they equate cigarettes with pipes and cigars. That's like comparing a heroin addict to someone who takes aspirin every day. Unless you've been there, your opinion counts for nothing. Try a premium cigar or hookah, then a cigarette or two the next day, and tell me I'm wrong.

I for one am a 'super taster', so many things that others don't think is bitter is extremely bitter to me, which means coffee is so bitter that I gag. I cannot get used to it no matter the amount of sugar or milk. Heck, even fraps are almost too bitter.

I watched this, whilst smoking a pipe and relaxing as I Occasionally do to unwind. I do many things that are very good for my body, low meat diet, I drink kombucha to help liver function, exercise, eat very little processed sugar, etc... however I very much enjoy the relaxation, and contemplation that I get while enjoying an occasional bowl of tobacco. That breathing technique and the focus you must have on the task of smoking a pipe is zen-like for me. I feel I’m quite likely to be hit by a car while riding my bicycle, getting a concussion while snowboarding, get food poisoning from a restaurant, or accidentally cutting an extremity off while wood working... all behaviors have some risk to your body, so be sure to remember, all things in moderation, with precautions noted

I know this is an old comment, but people have to realize that people should be paying far more attention to the all of the sugar and processed foods (which are regularly sprayed with pesticides and herbicides btw) than pipe tobacco. Cigarettes, which have over 100 chemicals added to them, 69 are carcinogenic, are a totally different animal. It's generally the chemicals that have been added to cigarettes that people are addicted to than the nicotine. Very few pipe smokers are addicted. Nicotine also has shown recently to have a positive side as it has shown to inhibit the penetration and spread of Covid and have a prophylactic effect, though I'm not endorsing it.

(Take me with a grain of salt im only psych student as of yet). I have a theory for a disorder that I call "trained dopamine dysfunction". It involves things that people are aware of but I dont think understand the significance of. There are a lot of different factors but ill be more specific to the video. Through different types of dependence on varying things, you are in a sense training your dopamine system to only be stable when the external stimulus is present. Take the stimulus away, you get a dopamine imbalance, and in turn spikes and dips in energy. Again, this is understood as a thing with cigarettes, but I dont think the idea of dopamine conditioning as a disorder is widely accepted or given much attention. So the take away of this for anyone trying to quit smoking, the #1 thing to restore dopamine balance in your brain is exercise / abstinence, then more exercise and more abstinence from nicotine. The exercise is extremely important, it will help your body learn to produce a normal/adequate amount of dopamine on its own. Abstinence over time helps your body forget nicotine dependent dopamine pattern. Now if you want to get a little more theoretical with it, I believe dopamine has a type of memory to it. What this means is that the more times you quit smoking, the better you will get at it, because the body will stop recognizing the lack of constant nicotine as unfamiliar and uncomfortable.

This is the case and we see it with amphetamine addiction where the release of dopamine is exponentially greater. The body always tries to return to homeostasis eventually as you keep agonising these receptors (dopamine d2_ they become accustomed to this constant stimulation. This is seen in all addiction, the brain becomes conditioned to this constant release of dopamine. The addiction more or less comes with the elevated state and physiological effects; the brain craves this stimulation, making it believe this is what is normal. The same is seen with GABAnergic substances such as benzodiazepines, ethanol, and gabapentinoids. The brain gets used to running in a depressed state, when you stop taking the substance the brain becomes overstimulated.

Tobbacco seeds are only left to develop if its for breeding purposes, for production the plant is clipped to stop it from increasing in height, this disrupts apical growth.. in turn increasing lateral growth and increase in leaf size.

tobacco seeds are very very small. when i lived in Belize my neighbor had true Cuban tobacco plants and gave me the seeds, i moved 40 miles north into Mexico and not a single seed would grow. but there was native tobacco there, subspecies rustica, which when brought back to the states did not grow! As far as fruits they were just small green seed pods. the flowers were beautiful little pink trumpets. I wish i never started smoking. very addictive. i think over the last 9 yrs i went two whole months of not smoking.

I'm a cigar smoker, I smoke big cigars somewhat infrequently and smaller cigars semi frequently. While I enjoy them and I do sometimes get in the mood where I want one I can't say that I feel addicted to them in anyway, I only smoke when the warmer weather comes here in the UK which is about 4-5 months and I can go quite easily half a year or longer without one. I think there is a huge difference between premium cigars and pipe tobaccos compared to normal cigarettes. I would be very interested in a study comparing frequent/infrequent pipe and cigar smokers with that of normal cigarette smokers conducted over a long period of time. I personally don't drink alcohol which I consider to be one of the worlds most harmful drugs. I understand there are potential dangers with smoking however in moderation I believe a person will be fine, your probably doing less damage smoking a cigar in the countryside for an hour than breathing in city air for a day. If I wanted to live in a completely safe world I would check into a high security prison where I will be under 24/7 armed protection, have set meals, bedtimes and bath times all year round, in an environment where pointy objects are restricted so I don't hurt myself or others.

It is not just the nicotine that is harmful to the health. What is really harmful are the countless pesticides that are sprayed on the tobacco plant in mass production commercial farming. A smoker is breathing in A LOT more nasties than just nicotine... If I was a smoker I would grow my own tobacco, or buy reliable certified organic tobacco grown without pesticides.

so why is it the case that I was addicted to cigarettes for over 20 years. a few months after I quit I started smoking a pipe. I smoke it 2 or 3 times a week. sometimes I'll go a week or 2 without smoking. I do believe nicotine is very lightly addictive (addicting is not a word) if addictive at all and it's the added chemicals used to make the paper that is smoked instead of tobacco in cigarettes. there is little to no actual tobacco in cigarettes.

barnacle pete some people don't get the effects of certain medication, this is especially true for psychiatric medication. Since nicotine is chemical that affects the brain it follows that the same is true, it's highly dependent on the individual. I was smoking for three months, don't know if that's long enough but I've given up solely because it's just too expensive in my country (12 fucking Euro per pack).

I smoke and would love to quit but it's hard. I've tried medications, the patch and the gum but it's just not the same. I know the health risks but it's so addictive and it works so well in dealing with stress and other "benefits" that it makes it that much harder. Unfortunately there isn't a 50/50 with it as far as bad health risks. The damage does not out way the benefits. With that being said even though cigarettes are bad there are many factors that go into whether you develop a disease as a result from smoking or not. Genetics and pre existing conditions are just a few. My advice is don't start smoking. I started at the age of 20 after I joined the Army and I wish I hadn't. But it's done now so all I can hope is that either I quit or I beat the odds and don't succumb to its ill effects. Good luck to all those of you who smoke and I wish you luck in quitting or good health.

I'm a plant biologist and I regularly grow tobacco in our green house for experimental purposes. I love tobacco because 1. it is easiest plant to genetically modify and study interesting stuff, thats why you find a lot of scientific literature on tobacco. 2. it is excellent host for plant viruses, actually first virus to be discovered was tobacco mosaic virus, so we can study plant virology very efficiently; and 3. by definition it produces fruits but these are actually seed pods, giving out a lot of seeds.

There's been at least one study that demonstrates that nicotine alone is only mildly addictive and that it is a naturally occurring MAOI in tobacco which magnifies the addictive qualities which makes smoking and other direct tobacco consumption so addictive. Physiologically nicotine itself is quite similar to caffeine. Even chemically the molecules are similar and in nature caffeine would appear to server the same purpose, a natural pest deterrent. Point being that nicotine itself is not incredibly dangerous and it appears that it also, on it's own, is not terribly addictive.

Smoked for 7 years and for awhile smoked a pack a day. I quit cold turkey haven't craved a cigarette for a year and a half. Although I smoke a briar pipe now and then which is a good medium. I might smoke a bowl every couple weeks or so. But I don't really crave it I go months without even thinking about pipe smoking.

tobacco also contains an Mao inhibitor that many researchers believe when combined with nicotine makes it irresistible if you have ever tried vaping you probably noticed it didn't do the same thing as a cigarette

Tobacco has the smallest seed of any plant. I visited a tobacco farm and he said that he can keep all of his seeds for over 100 acres in a pill bottle. Of course, he gets seedlings because the seed is so small and fragile though

Nicotine is also an immuno-suppressant; it does this by lowing your white blood cell count. I do not know what the mechanism behind this effect is. This is probably why it's carcinogenic, since cancer is, in essence, a failure of the immune system.

It's because it's got a naturally occurring MAOI (can't remember if A or B or both, or how strongly it inhibits), and nicotine is only addictive when co-administered with MAOIs. I heard about this years ago.

There is nicotine therapy for a few different gastrointestinal ailments. I have met a few older people that were told to chew tobacco for their stomach problems since childhood. It would more likely be a patch therapy for IBS today.

Smoking doesn’t only mean cigarettes or vaping. There’s also pipe smoking where you shouldn’t inhale. How does pipe smoking effect the human body? Does it do it in the same way but in a different manner because your not getting the same amount of nicotine as other ingesting types? How does nicotine cause diabetes? Very informative video thanks may your ember stay lit!

2:08 I've never seen or tried one but after some minor googling I found some images of little berry-sized things that look like tiny green tomatoes. That's what the fruit of a potato plant looks like too, so since the three are related I bet that's what tobacco fruit looks like too. Also side note, potato fruit is super toxic (like it doesn't kill you right away but if you eat a bunch over a long period of time it can ruin you) if memory serves, and I imagine tobacco fruit is too but probably more so or even straight up poisonous if I had to guess.

I've been smoking cigars and the occasional corncob pipe for about three years and I don't have the "cravings" or "itches" for a smoke. I do it when I want to relax, but I don't need it to relax. If my need for it would be comparable to something it would be a cup of coffee in the morning; it would make my day but I can live without it. Is there something specific about why cigarette smokers are more dependent then the alternative tobacco smokers?

I smoke and vape. Nicotine helps my ADHD. Shuts my brain up. It’s an addiction but it’s like I use it as a medication. And if I don’t have it I freak out. I’d rather not smoke anything at all but it’s the only thing I’ve found so far that’s easy and available that stops the symptoms of adhd.
