@@loves2smooch384 no. When it comes to barbell squats going slightly beyond parallel or ass to grass produced similar gains, it might actually be bad to go ass to grass because you can lose tension in the quads and load it all in the lower back because it has the tendensy to round, the reason why it looks like Tom Platz's ass was touching the ground is because his legs, both things and calves, were ginormous, so they would touch each other much sooner. You know, everytime I have the hack squat as my first leg exercise I always superset leg curls and standing calf raises; I know it sounds stupid, but these two exercises aren't taxing at all and by working them first thing when you're fresh, not only you will perform better, but they will be pumped up of blood, so they will be able to better stabilize and you will go to a full squat position much sooner, so it will actually IMPROVE your squat performance. I have to try it on barbell squats tho, right now I only do it before the hack squat

Full range of motion is not necessary to build muscle. Half reps are equally effective. But people typically do half reps in the easiest potion of the range of motion. Why don’t more people do half reps in the bottom half? Because they’d have to cut their weight in half and the ego won’t allow that.

Unless you have knee/joint issues, sounds like you have a form issue. Lower your weight, & experiment with the width of your feet - make sure your toes are pointed outward (to what degree depends on what feels best for you), & of course brace your core & keep your back erect
@dabofiron.itzsimplicity2 жыл бұрын
It will take some getting used to for certain, as that’s not a movement your muscles or joints are used to. But it’s certainly worth dropping the weight & working your way back up to where you were at before Not using a full ROM means there are parts of the muscle that aren’t being worked

i’m 6’1 and what helped my knees was switching to low bar, or somewhere between low and high, but not actually highbar. keep in mind you do not need to go ass to grass unless you’re training for olympic lifting. Platz is only like 5’8. when he squats just to parallel, his ass is pretty close to the ground. when you and i do parallel, there is still a lot of room between us and the floor, even though we’re doing the exact same position as he is. the best development of legs is going to be what the modern guys do - machines. dorian yates didn’t even do squats. he used machines for his absurd leg development and this is what the modern guys have stuck to doing

@dooderman8361 Жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said except “half the muscle mass” you don’t magically get double muscle mass by increasing the range of motion by an inch, like you said it build more strength for the entire movement, allowing you to train harder/lift heavier safely, indirectly allowing you to build more muscle mass. It doesn’t directly build more muscle mass, it indirectly gives you the potential to build more muscle mass, there’s a difference. Not to mention, some people literally can’t do it without huge risk of injury, and if they do get injured that heavily heavily offsets any additional gains you would have gotten from the “full range of motion”. Anyone can still build strength and mass using a mostly full and much safer range of motion, as hypertrophy is driven by the net tension placed on the muscle, not how far it’s stretched, training your strength to stretch it further (such as using a longer range of motion) will allow you to increase the tension applied but the act of stretching it further doesn’t directly increase the net tension therefore has no direct effect on hypertrophy.

Wrong. Tom Platz squats full range of motion because it works for his structure since he’s a shorter athlete. Go watch Arnold squat, he doesn’t go all the way down not because he has poor ankle mobility but because he’s taller. He would stick weights under his heels that act the same way squat shoes do to keep the squat from being a butt and lower back movement, to keep the tension on his quads. If your short you don’t need squat shoes in fact squat barefoot. If your 5’10” an up invest in squat shoes but don’t be surprised if you can’t squat as much as you usually do because it’ll keep you from using your glutes an lower back.
