TR4 is still my favorite classic game, but as a kid I thought Lara actually died. Luckily she survived, however it was still shocking for me. Also, I was surprised how much fun it was after playing TR3 which was so hard. Loved the video!

TR4 always holds a special place in my heart. Not sure if it was because of the emotion the game had or the fact that Egypt is completely awesome idk. It was a fun adventure with Lara and I hope we can get a full remake of it one day.
@everdimension2 ай бұрын
Concentrating on one setting made the game so much more atmospheric than the other entries. It's kind of a slow burner that let's you get immersed into the world so deeply and explore it to the fullest. Ancient egypt is the holy grail for tomb and artefact plots but gets touched only shallowly in most movies and games. But here the locations, the puzzles and the myths are brought to their full potential. I wish there was a modern remake of this game, maybe even larger and just as slow-paced as this one TR 4 wasn't my first tomb raider game but it can easily be the my favorite one. I only finished it once but I keep thinking about it a lot ever since for so many years...

Tomb Raider II, in my opinion, was the greatest of the original series. TLR was my second favorite because I adore Ancient Egypt, but II wowed me so much back then, both in terms of story and technical aspects, that I can't deny I prefer it. TR II boasts some of the best levels in any video game ever; from the time you enter the Opera House to the very end, everything is brilliantly planned. TR II is jam-packed with insanely amazing riddles, as well as the series' best action experience. The story is complicated and seamlessly mixes the various locales you visit; the entire plot feels like one large and deeply connected adventure, despite the fact that it takes place in a number of separate locations. From a technical standpoint, the TR II plot is most certainly the most intricate in the series, with a lot, and I mean A LOT, of hidden mastermind things behind the scenes that the game does not explicitly tell you about. I can recommend FoxMaster's video "The Hidden Beauty of Tomb Raider 2 - Full Documentary," which provides a wonderful, deep, and somewhat well-rounded look at this.
@Bobthepetferret2 жыл бұрын
TR2 does have a great story. I personally don't think it's all that intricate, but it does a great job tying all the levels together and offers up a fun adventure of dragons and Mafia cults. It simply does what it needs to and does it well. Thanks for the recommendation too, I'll definitely check it out!

The Last Revelation has so enigmatic, beautiful, unique athmosphere. The music suits really well. Egypt takes the player to so many puzzles. Not very easy game, I would say. The ending really was quite a shock back then, when played first time. I love this game, forever! :)

This game is really iconic and has a special place in my heart. It was my first TR experience back in 2002. That soundtracks, storyline and animations were mindblowing (for a 7yo kid sometimes traumatizing) at that time! Puzzles were too many and hard but enjoyable when you do one after 5 hours or more :'). Even after I played older and newer TR games, it is still the best one in the series for me.
@Bobthepetferret3 жыл бұрын
The puzzles in this one are some real brain teasers at times. I love how much the library planet puzzle can trip you up with the sun and Earth placements, for instance. But it's such a good game, and even though the first game was my introduction to the series, the fourth one is the one that won me over the most.

I could listen to you talk about Tomb Raider for hours. I love the series and really enjoy the LPs you did of them. Maybe you could do video essays on each game in depth? I realize you covered a lot of ground in your previous video, but you going, say, level by level and explaining your likes, dislikes, what you think of the secrets or the music, Easter eggs or quirks like that random lock in the pillar in TR1, etc. would be a fun watch. Or maybe a video about Tomb Raider ideas? What you would like to see done or which culture explored? Basically, you + Tomb Raider = automatic must watch for me. ☺️

I actually have a couple ideas for future TR content! They're bigger projects though, so they'll be out sometime next year. Not saying anymore right now though ;) I did consider a video on each game, but I feel that would have been better throughout this year, following the official celebration, but who knows? Maybe I'll do it one day anyway?

I agree 1000%. I remember this being my first TR game and completely falling into the wonders that made it so great. The amount of research that core put into this one game is just mind boggling. I recently picked up my skills on TRLE and I'm currently making a level dedicated to the Cleopatra location, which was my favorite area design wise. This game is a masterpiece.
@Bobthepetferret2 жыл бұрын
Cleopatra's Palace is such a cool area. That opening room with the pool instantly sets a vibe, and the little clockwork scarab was a cute way to get through traps. I would say I'd love to see what you do in TRLE, but my knowledge of how to get it all working is so poor right now!

This is also my favourite game ever. It holds a very special place in my heart. Ofcourse it has problems which I cannot ignore today(huge amounts of ammo, constant graphical glitches on PC version etc...), yet still better than all the soulles industrial junks today. I have funny memories about this specific Tomb Raider entry, at my friend's parents beach house, we played it for some time and we found so funny those guys with scimitars blocking our shots so calmly with their blades, it's hilarious, comical. I think I was 11 when I finished the original Tomb Raider on the Saturn back in 1997, it was a game changer for me, the very first 3D action game I played where you could freely explore ruins, swim gigantic flooded areas, find secrets and feel secluded in eerie places. Tomb Raider II and III, much like DOOM II and Final DOOM, never felt like true sequels, but rather expansion packs, nothing groundbreaking actually happened from TR2 though Chronicles (like the aforementioned series sequels) and getting back to magazines from the time, when in Last Revelation reviews, they will show the series was dragging on and on and Core/Eidos were milking it since it was their biggest hit series. I like all classic Tomb Raider titles, even the Gold expansions, but something needs to be said about the open ended approach with IV. It's the same with Hexen, whereas the previous game was Heretic, which was a straightforward DOOM in the dark ages, Hexen opted for a hub world and you know what? Today it sucks big time. Super Mario 64 style where developers can't find better ways to make a good long game, so it's an artificial way to make these games "last" longer. In contrast, previous TR games are better games, in my opinion, as wondering around huge and empty areas, where they are interconnected with loadings, it's really not a good choice, feels like a step back. Don't get me wrong, I really like TR4, but in many aspects, all three previous entries are more fun and more engaging, level by level structure is the way to go for the PS1 TR classics, open ended requires a lot of tuning and probably better hardware to work right, but If I consider all subsequent TR classics as extensions to the original, I can digest IV and V much more easily. As for the best third person action game in Egypt we can play today, it's hands down AC Origins, TR4 can't touch it in any regard. If you haven't played it, please, do yourself a favor and try it.
@Bobthepetferret24 күн бұрын
I find it fascinating you criticise TR4 for feeling like it's artificially padded, then recommend AC Origins, a game which features an entire corner of its map containing literally nothing just so Ubisoft can boast about the size of the map. Don't get me wrong, I liked Origins, but if any game is guilty of excessive padding, it's the Assassin's Creed series (or indeed, most Ubisoft open world games).
@roberto151924 күн бұрын
@@Bobthepetferret Open world games heyday is a thing of the past indeed, and I was expecting this argument. As I said, I like TR4, but even comparing as a long running series, AC Origins is just a much better game in Egypt, better yet, ancient Egypt with a proper and much closer rendering of a real world than any classic TR could do. I'd say that any third person action game past the original Tomb Raider borrows from it and even AC can't escape it. I wouldn't say I'm the biggest AC series fan as I only jumped in when ACO was released so I didn't suffer from this series fatigue, I played few open world games overall, and I'm happy that I did because I enjoyed it thoroughly, just like I did with the sequel/prequel Odyssey and I feel I played enough AC ever since. I will say again, TRIII, in my opinion is the better game because it's more varied and centered as a game, whereas TR4 tries to do things it could only be done properly in another generation, not a bad game, but flawed in many aspects, I don't even think Chronicles is a bad TR, it's just the worst classic TR, which I can still enjoy because it's still better than many other games.
@Larry3 жыл бұрын
If this is your favourite, what did you think of Legends. It's a shame Eidos only saw money, as killing off a major character would have been something wholly original. Even today I can't think of one that die dies. Even Snake didn't really die at the end of MGS4.
@SheezyBites3 жыл бұрын
Raziel's the only one that really comes to mind, and he's nowhere neat as major as Lara. I guess you could argue Desmond Miles?
@Bobthepetferret3 жыл бұрын
Legend was good, if a bit short and generally easier. I enjoyed it quite a bit, even if it was a dramatic shift. And you're right that games rarely ever kill off their major characters. As you say, Metal Gear sort of tried, and I know God of War 3 did the same (before Kratos got better and moved to Norway to raise a family). I don't think any publisher would be too willing to let it happen permanently sadly, because it would be a real shock and narratively interesting

This is also my favorite video game of all time. I adore it. I always found it weird how many people gush over TR1 and say the series went downhill right after that... I love all of the first 4 games, and i believe they only kept getting better and better up to this one. I was bit concerned how it was entirely taking place in Egypt, but the game's level design is a masterpiece. So much variety, i rarely felt bored. Only in couple of spots, which is great for a game of this lenght. It's crazy how many memorable places it has. Tomb Raider is my favorite series because i find ancient historical places so fascinating, and another thing sparking my interest is the supernatural. So combine these two, and bam. I even love the modern yet isolated areas. This game manages to tickle all the right spots for me, even the soundtrack is great. The version of the main theme is just beautiful.

I really liked Tomb Raider 3 and The Last Revelation. Graphically, they were amazing, and technically, they achieved complex executions like sprinting, crawling, and improved enemy ai. The problem with those games, for me, was a lack of major innovation, which was mainly caused by Eiddos Interactive's overzealous marketing. Even the team at Core Design was becoming tired of the franchise by this point. Even so, I will defend them as great games with creative stories

Egypt still got a bit stale for me. No matter how much they mixed up the environments, it all still felt like "Egypt". It was simply the constant vibe, whether inside a sandy tomb or on the streets of a town. And to my detriment, Egypt is not my favorite historical or cultural spaces in these games. It offers great challenges and lore, but I can only take it in very short bursts. That was probably the only overarching gripe I had, but because it was so constant TLR forever left me with a sandy taste in my mouth.

Different locations is what always felt most exciting to me in TR games, I could never wait to see where we'll take Lara next and how it's all going to look and feel like. So having that taken away sucked a lot of the fun out of it for me.

Levels are connected but they fail in communication to the player in where to go or what to do plus the new moves for Lara as well as the new utilities are either bad implemented or never told to the player. In my case I grew up with TR3 and learned sort of that lack of communication to the player bluntly, but this one got me stuck so many times that I skipped some parts, specially the ending :( Im interested in how Aspyr will remaster this game because it can be way more enjoyable if they worked on the communication to the player by telling what Lara can do or how to use some items in the adventure

I agree. TR1 was a massive hit, TR2 improved everything TR1 stood for, TR3 with small improvements in gameplay seems more like a vignette. TR4 is peak Tomb Raider in terms of gameplay and story. Out of all Tomb Raider games, TR4 is the one I replayed the most, even TRL doesn't come close.

Exactly. TR4 is the result of years of refinement, taking everything from the previous games and putting into a package where everything screams "this is what a Tomb Raider game should be"

Ooh. The fight between 2 and 4 is like choosing between your children.

Tr4 was my first game for the PC i i got It for Christmas 99 from my mum who also liked it, i was 9, i was in love with Lara, she totally turned me on😁 played the shit out of It! I still remember It all and i play It every while, sure the best tomb Raider for me, i still dont get why they tried to kill off Lara when the tr saga was a mega succes, that day i finished the game for the first time i was like WTF? What core design Is thinking? I hated them but Lara was so loved and TR their main game so they changed idea of course

Sorry but the first Tomb Raider will always be the greatest. Nothing comes close to capturing the magic and sense of isolation in that first game. Whilst all all the sequels brought something new and exciting, last revelation was for me a departure from a lot of what made Tomb Raider so successful, a globe trotting bad ass who only plays for sport.

I agree 100%! Even though I hate TR3 London levels and for me this one being the weakest of the first threes, I still wanted to finish it. I don't get why people say TR3 is the hardest one. TR4 was so frustrating to play that I thought to myself "I will have a better time just replaying the other ones". And I adore the gold expansions. Lara just became bitter in 4 and AoD and even though she's really funny in 6, it's just not the direction I wanted to see. Or at least having another character development where she finds her love for adventure again.

Funny. I just couldn't love this game. The lack of self-contained levels just meant I never knew where to go. Just endlessly getting stuck. It all felt a bit aimless.

That's fair, it can get a little confusing at times. I can see that what was fun for me running around figuring it all out can be obnoxious for someone else!

I think you can really enjoy these games even with walkthrough and guides, to appreciate a bit more the athmosphere and story, or just to think “oh yes i had to do this or that.”

Interconnected levels were confusing, the game dragged for so long I actually finished Chronicles first, the final boss was a joke, riding the motorcycle was awful, the sandy level design actually got boring really fast. The best Tomb Raider game? Absolutely not. Would I still recommend this one to those who played the first three and liked it? Absolutely yes.

I couldn't stand this game. The enemies are so annoying, many of them are invulnerable. On top of that the game requires you to solve puzzles whilst said invulnerable enemies are chasing you. There are far too few moments for relaxation and exploration. It was a downgrade in many ways for me. Even the small changes, like the menus were worse.

@gintonichub There are more. The scarabs and locusts for example. While I get your point, the implementation was far too annoying to me.

Ropes are the biggest crimes of this game lol Aside the new mechanics, this game would have been as good as the original trilogy if the last half of the levels were not as bad as they were.
