Very hard BUT, if they have it everywhere, no need to add it on your own land, right next to where they bed in your land. Instead, with zero food they can bed randomly anywhere. That's one way if it applies to you...

I cannot tell you how many private property owners here in PA REFUSE to shoot does on their property because they think “more does around will bring more bucks during the rut” they have just made their property a rut only property (no good if you follow jeffs videos) ive seen groups of 20-30 does feeding in fields during rifle season and bow season. Then these guys wonder why they have nothing but scrap bucks and yearlings on their properties or they cant pattern the big boy hanging around

I had a conversation with someone with a degree in wildlife management, and they tried to convince me that the key to good hunting was to develop a doe sanctuary. That doe bedding was the most important. I know that a property needs to be attractive to deer, but I believe that this was old school thinking. I believe that Jeff has a better philosophy.

Don't confuse sanctuary with over abundance of does. Deer need to feel comfortable living on the land = sanctuary. If your land is a "pads thru" property, meaning no bedding, then your chances of success are low as you need to hope that deer / bucks pass thru. Deer need a reason to be there. Cover, food, water, does to breed.

It's about the ratio as well. If you see 30 does and 1 buck, you're out of balance. If you see 30 does and 10 bucks that continue to be on or around your land, you have a decent balance. It's all relative. That's why Jeff said there isn't a particular number. You may have 10 does that you see more than once in a day. If you're counting the multiple sightings as 20 or 30 deer, you risk making bad decisions on herd reduction.

My property is a doe bedding area and I have monster bucks show up every year. I have horses and the does are so use to seeing me on a daily basis, when the bucks show up, the bucks actually tolerate my presence without running off. I could get a 150” plus buck every year off of my property, but it doesn’t seem humane or fair since they have their guard down. I had one of my horses out last year riding and I had 5 mature bucks hanging out and battling over a doe-and they acted like I wasn’t even there.

I currently have 120 acres of mature oaks (principally) that's been pass through property. That should change after logging in October and food plots in the fall of 2023. Would you plant clover or something else now on our atv path to attract and hold some does this year in prep for next year?

Howdy Rick- I don’t know your limitations, but I’d say start this year!!! In my opinion, you get to test out your equipment, methods, potential, results and needs. You’ll have a unique, positive life experience that gives you momentum into next year’s logging. Any late season food is going to attract deer too! Just apply WHS strategies and see what happens. Tomorrow is not a guarantee 👍 (This is my first season of plots and the excitement might be getting to me!) Good luck!!!

@@kurtpearson2793 I do use Huntwise and record fall deer routes as Jeff recommends. I also have put in three mock scrapes and licking sticks in front of stands with a camera to document deer. Most buck sightings were at night, which is consistent with my open, mature hardwood property. Last year I burned out the five stands I have by hunting too often. Also, they were too obvious so I'll need to conceal them better.

Had an extremely good Wisconsin hunt this season. I only saw three does in the 7 day hunt, but one of them was an albino. I felt pretty blessed to see something like that from my stand, and watch her go about her way. I was also fortunate enough to be in the right spot to arrow a nice 8 point on the last day of the hunt. So as Jeff points out, seems like less doe presence can be a good thing. Thanks for another excellent video.

For planting buckwheat next weekend for me in SW Wisconsin do you recommend mowing the rye that is about 4’ tall before spreading buckwheat seed or put seed down and roll over and spray?

Hi Jerry...if you are using my Ultimate No Till method you would want to wait until about mid June to plant on good soil. If good seed to spil contact and up to 15/18" tall I just seed into the rye, then roll and spray. Enjoy this great weather 😊

Just wanted to thank you for putting all your videos on youtube. I started watching your channel 2 years ago. After implementing many of the things you talk about in your videos, I wanted to let you know that we had out best year ever this past hunting season. We (myself, brother, son, and daughter) harvested 5 "mature" bucks last year. In any other given year before I started watching your videos, we would usually take 1 "mature" buck every 2-3 years. We continue eliminating excess does and it has allowed for more of the older bucks to be willing to stay on our property much more of the time. I expect to that we will have an even better season this fall than we did last year. I know there are more mature deer now where we hunt and a BIG part of that is because of what you teach on your channel through your videos. Thank you.

General question - would you avoid cutting any trees you want to resprout/hinge between green up and August? Still plan to cut a bunch of cedars blocking the sun (new job has made it so I haven’t made it to the farm this spring, man never thought I’d miss lockdowns) but didn’t know if I should hold off on trees I want stump sprouts and hinge growth since everything is fully awake now.

I’m considering converting maybe 8-10 acres to switchgrass etc for betting but looking to find a way to have the feds pay for the rent on the land and cost share on the plantings. Our property in southeast ohio was clear-cut 12 years ago and is still decently thick. Bucks roam on us in the summer but tend to leave in the fall. Unfortunately, the does were also gone this past fall. I'm pretty sure they were drawn away by bordering leased properties heavily baiting w apples and such. We really don't have much room for food plots. Our land is too steep in general for them. We baited w corn and were able to see quite a few younger bucks during the early and late bow season. Nothing during the rut. Any advice would be appreciated on how to hold more deer in baited regions.

I've been listening and trying to learn as much as I can from listening and watching your videos the last 2 years and we have consistently seen bigger more mature bucks in daylight in October and November on our lease. My friend and I only control 40 of the 200 acres and we have 3 small food plots that generate good activity. If it weren't for a few of my mistakes I would have killed a mature buck each of the past 2 years. Your principles work to a tee. I'm hoping this next year we can finally capitalize on a big one. Too many does? I wish I could find a deer of any flavor, my freezer is empty and I am hungry. The only deer I have seen on my cameras are a few does and a few fawns, the neighbor shot one fawn so now there are 3 does and two fawns. They only come out at night except for the one fawn and that was the end of that deer, it was smaller than my dog but around here we shoot any deer we see even when it still has spots. I have 11 cameras that run year round so I know every deer in the woods and this year is slim pickings. Last year was slim too but at least there were a couple of young bucks but we shot them so now we are fresh out of bucks and when we get those 3 remaining does and the 2 fawns we will be completely out of deer. You may say "Don't shoot the deer, let them build the herd" but if I don't shoot them then everyone else will. I let the fawn go because it was tiny but the neighbor shot it and turned it into snack sticks so now I have no dumb fawns that come out during daylight and no snack sticks either, what a bummer.

Hi Isaac! A clear cut is where the loggers cut every tree down in a given areas...or nearly every tree. Could be a clear cut pockwtbof 1 acre or 5 or 10...or an entire 40 acre parcel. Trees like aspen and certain stands of conifer need to be completely clear cut for maximum regen for the efficiency of timber cutting.
