Among many car fans, the 1990s are considered the golden age of Japanese sports cars with standouts including the Toyota Supra, Acura NSX, Mazda R-X7, Nissan 300ZX, Mitsubishi 3000GT, and Mazda Miata. In the current auto market, buyer tastes have shifted toward sport utility vehicles and trucks and automakers are trimming their lineups of sedans and sports cars. But Japanese automakers such as Toyota, Honda, and Nissan continue to bet on sports cars, and some big names, such as the Toyota Supra and the Acura NSX have returned to the US.

Also don't forget that America is the largest economy (still bigger than China) with the strongest military and by far the single most influential government in the world. Can't have it both ways, manufacturers only make money on the first sale which is why Mustangs and Camaro/Corvettes have been around this whole time - they price themselves in a way you can afford to buy them new and in lesser trims to maintain volume and keep the parts common with higher trims cheap.

GT86 wasn't underestimated, the reception was pretty damn accurate. After such a long time of being out of sports cars, Toyota was finally back and they were partnering with Subaru on this project, so there was a lot of hype on how great the car could be. And then the result was just an alternative option to an MX-5. The 200 hp was just mediocre to the point of being boring when you had exited a corner. If it had between 225-275 HP stock and with it's ~2800lb curb weight, it'd be Toyota bringing back a taste of the past's fast, light, and FR layout Japanese cars that Japanese competitors had discontinued ages ago (S2000, RX-7 FD, S15). Fortunately the new GR86 comes with 228 hp and ~2770 lb curb weight which is respectable and gives an excellent balance of speed and handling.

Not necessarily, I'm 20 right now, huge petrolhead, and I can assure you that I would have loved to be in that generation with these kinds of sports cars back when they were new, like the 240z or the supra for examples. The thing is, right now these cars are getting friggin old want it or not (my miata is older than I am)... so, in a world dominated by crossovers, I'm glad to have an opportunity, that "my" generation has an opportunity to be able to enjoy this kind of cars too... at least before they get over 25 y/o 😂

@@mattc2306 Buddy, in America you can still get the skyline R32 and R33 because the 25 year rule is up. Hell, I’ve even seen both an R33 and R32 skyline GTRs at local car meets and on the highways, and plus the single turbo 1996 Supra is also legal now thanks to it’s 25 year rule being up, plus America has lower gas prices than a lot of other countries. As long as you don’t live in a giant city like New York, or anywhere in the state of commiefornia, you can pretty much put on almost any car mod you want on something. And besides, if you really want to get into Nissans being banned, look at most countries in Europe. The new Nissan 400Z is actually banned throughout most of Europe. As an American car enthusiast, you really gotta count your blessings because I heard from some guy on Reddit that in his country, any car with more than 2 liters will get a heavy markup of around 65%. If anything, America has to be one of the better countries to become a car guy, especially with corona around because not only do you have a lot of open road to travel with, but also barely any traffic whatsoever.

An Outstandingly beautiful, top end, jaw dropper. Their reputation was made as they introduced an entry level companion, a two door fastback. Then a four door of the same model. My very first car was a 90 300zxTT. Not the wisest thing to purchase at 18yrs old! I couldn't even drive it because it was a manual. I fell in love with that car, as soon as I got it home I couldn't stop staring at it. Stood there for 5 min and taught myself how to drive a stick. That clutch managed to last another 2 months. It was such a pure driving enthusiast car. Been in love with Nissan's every since. I love how you can turn basically any of their cars into a one of a kind tuner. I then purchased a 94 3rd gen Maxima SE. It was a 5 speed and it has a limited slip front differential. It had the FWD version on the 300zx engine. It was completely stock and take when I got it. I then got the mod bug, I lowered it 2 inches, CAI, Full exhaust from headers, y-pipe, high flow cat, cat back exhaust. Fully upgraded the suspension so it handled well. Shocked a lot of ppl with that car. I've also never had a Nissan let me down. I've given plenty of them some good abuse too. Not one failed head gasket, no catastrophic failure. I've only had one Domestic sports car an 02 Z28 Camaro. That LS1 V8 there's nothing like it. Loved that car, but I still kept going back to the Nissan's. Ive had an 04 G35X AWD that has 209k. It still performs well, it's extremely reliable. That thing will definitely last another 100k. If you want a nice luxury car, and it's reliable get an Infiniti for sure. I've owned them all, had a Cadillac. Had nothing but problem for a then 10yr old car. Had a Lincoln Ls it was then only 6 yrs old. Can't really speak on weather it would of held up since it was totaled. Fun car though, I had a 95 BMW M3 as well. It was then only 12 yrs old, it was plagued with problems. Nothing has been as reliable as a Nissan/Infiniti. My car is 16yrs old and feels modern still. Car feels safe and planted and it's fast! It has luxury and performance. The best of both worlds, even though it's outdated. I have my eyes set on an Infiniti M56S. It's a more modern luxury sedan with a 420hp V8! It competes with M5s, AMGs, etc. The best bang for your buck, these cars are built to last. It's why ppl are still asking for 4k-5k for a 16yr old car.

The issue isn’t lack of interest. It’s the insane prices. Mid 50k for a Mustang/Supra/etc is insane. These used to be middle class heroes but now the payment is a mortgage. The 86 should be a 20k car. The fact that 35k gets you a 225hp car is pretty damn crazy. The stupider these prices get the less they’ll sell and get any acclaim.

Renault ruined Nissan tbh. Excited for the 400z / z proto but they've shifted to ecoboxes almost exclusively with the exception of the z chassis and R35 (which is not as attainable as the S, earlier Z, and earlier R cars were.) Nissan still stands a chance but I think they are going towards following in the steps of toyota and will never win that fight in the US market at least

Sure, it's lighter, it'll carry speed through a corner, but even squeezing every ounce of performance out of it, it will get left behind, so you kinda have to hang out with same or just do your own thing, which can be fun for some.
