Why "TRANSFORMERS: Age of Extinction" is better than you think...

As a story you’ve got actual solid motivations for the characters. Prime has been forsaken by the humans and seen his oldest friends destroyed by them - of course he will be angry and conflicted. At it’s core this film is about the destructive power of greed and humanity’s belief that they are “the centre of the universe”. It’s also a warning about how technology can and does bring out our evil side. There’s so many layers to this film and I think with a bit of editing it could be brilliant.

I really enjoy this film as well! I never understood the criticism about Optimus being too violent.. The movie verse is obviously a little darker and more serious then the animated versions. Not to mention that the autobots and the decepticons are FIGHTING A WAR. And a pretty brutal one considering it lasted for thousands of years and completely devastated their planet.. I think it's a little too late to take POW's LOL.. Honestly, I like all the movies. Maybe with the exception of TLK. These are popcorn movies that are based on a toy line. Try to lighten up and have some fun.

THANK YOU! I'm one of the few people who liked Age of Extinction. Sure, it has some problems, but I have seen the movie more times than all the other Transformer films. For one thing, we get a darker Optimus Prime with a freaking sword, Lockdown was a cool bad guy (Who should have been Megatron and Galvatron should have been the ghost of Starscream like in the cartoons), a manly dad Cade Yaeger is better than screaming bratty Shia LeBeouf, Cade's daughter is a better actress than Megan Fox (I like her too), we have better Autobots where we recognize their personalities, the awesome Dinobots and we get Frank Welker back as Megatron/Galvatron. I love the movie.

@@novustalks7525 Alternative theory: Prime said that the AllSpark "created worlds and filled them with life". That's vague enough that you can treat it however you wish. The AllSpark created Cybetron, the Creators cyberformed planets and built the Transformers, then used the AllSpark to give life to the Transformers.

I don't care how popular the internet has made to hating these films - they are incredibly well mounted blockbusters. You simply don't have modern blockbusters that look like these films. Speaking as a person who has no ties to the original cartoon, I couldn't care less about the films disregard for the "lore" of an 80s cartoon made to explicitly sell toys. Like, I know ya'll TF fans are into that shit and more power to you. I ain't judging you. I just think fans latch onto to literal childrens toy commercials with a bit too much obsession. It ain't that deep. Fucking unclench. To me the Bayformers films are wild ass showstoppers. They're unhinged in the best of ways. They have a certain IDGAF attitude that is becoming more and more retroactively appealing the age of the capeflick widens. Bay knows how to craft action in a way that is immediately recognizable. There are at least 3 "fuck yea!" moments of pure cinematic badassery in every TF flick. Even the worst ones. "But muh writing and muh depth blah blah" cries the person who can't wait to fap off the Ant-Man meets the Bloopity Blop or whatever. Am I gonna pretend the stories for the Bayformers films are intricate and deep with layered and amazingly compelling characters? Nope. But I think this image of Bay being nothing but a blubbering man-child who bangs pots and pans together yet somehow ends up with amazing looking blockbusters is incredibly short-sighted, cynical, and unfair. There is more going on under the surface of many of Bays films that people simply don't want to acknowledge because he's the director we've been memeing for over a decade now. Bay may valorize and lavish love onto say, soldiers. But in most of his films there is a deeply cynical distain for the military apparatus, the suits, the decision makers. The leadership is often corrupt to the core and shown to be cartoonishly incompetent. Hell, the film that is the subject of this video is basically about how fucking evil and shady the CIA is - something a lot of Western media plays softball with. And here we have a 4-quadrant international blockbuster outwardly stating how fucking shady and gross they are. 13 Hours does the same thing. Need we talk about Ambulance? A film that is deadass about how the power structures of this country work against the very people we feign to support? I think Bay leans into his "dumb-dumb manbaby macho director" image with glee and a smirk. His films aren't subtle. But subtly is overrated.

This brings up a lot of good points about why I like this movie. I love all the bayverse movies equally (even the fifth one, but it’s increasingly hard to defend). One point I don’t agree with is Optimus’s design. Everywhere I go, I see people who hate this design of him specifically. I actually don’t mind it at all. It gives him a knightly feel. While I do think it would’ve been better to include more of his truck aspects, like his windows and wheels and what not, I love the idea of taking a compassionate, intelligent, patient leader and comparing him to an equal role. Knights are known for intelligence, leadership, courage, and sacrifice. I think, while not necessarily a take on G1 Optimus as so many people wishes he was, Age Of Extinction’s Optimus’s is really good and it fits the nobility that the character is known for in almost all iterations.

Although AOE is not one of my favorite movies because of how long it is, and how there are a lot of flaws with it, I do believe you bring up some fair points. I haven't watched the movie in a while and you've definitely inspired me to do a re-watch. I recognize Optimus' character arc and I like what they tried to do, but in my opinion they didn't execute it very well and that's mainly because the story is too far and wide and suffers from bloat for me to attach to the character arc. So many things happen in this movie and so much focus is spend on the other sub plots that it hurts the overall tone and theme the movie is going for. Instead of combining all the plots and sub plots into a coherent story, it messes with the flow of the story and makes the overall "package" a bit overwhelming and unfocused. If the movie stripped at least half an hour of it's run time, reduced the human stories a but and put a larger focus on the theme it could've been such a great movie, maybe even one of the best blockbusters, even if it wasn't recognized in its time. I really don’t. Like AoE its trust felt like a mess. There is a story I can see it, but it’s just poorly executed. Plus to me prime just feels like an angry father. But I must say lockdown is great. The trio of this movie is alright it’s not bad it’s not good. Overall I would rate the movie 3/10 or a 5/10.

my problem with AOE is that this movie is totally different movie, not transformers anymore it was like some reboot where characters looked so much more like humans they weren't original and beutiful like they were in the first 3 movies. Many old characters disappeared, without any explanation... It wasn't much different from other transformers movies by formula and its story is direct continuity from the third, but it didn't feel like connected to previous. Lockdown was pretty cool.

you just articulated what I feel abt this movie and why I love it, u kind sir, deserve more recognition, and to that I sub to you minor nitpick, I'm a G1 fan (not a purist), that being said, it still doesn't sit right with me hearing Optimus Prime say "I'll kill you!", it's like what you said, prime is kinda like batman in essence, so hearing him say it feels off from the character, and some might argue "well this prime has been through a lot" but again like what he said in the video, prime is willing to go the mile but he's still the same old Optimus Prime in his spark, so him being vocal about it, again, feels off. lastly I agree with what Pizmo said in the comments, the designs here feel less transformer and more human like, they all look great IMO especially hound and crosshairs, but I guess if the design team added a little more car-looking parts and less biomechanical smoothness to it (/the bumblebee movie did a great job with the designs btw melding bay-verse and G1 together seamlessly/), it would have more of that transformers feel. thank you for listening to my TED talk
