There is truth to the idea that he's not great at 1v1s, but that doesn't matter to Liverpool. They will happily accept the occasional mistake from Alisson because everything else he provides is worth the tradeoff, and the same is true of TAA.

He’s a good defender. In a 1v1 (which in reality doesn’t happen a lot in games) the attacker has a big advantage and it’s common for most prem wingers to be able to go past a defender. It’s only when it happens to Trent it becomes a story

Yeah, the Doku thing in particular is very weird, because it's one of the few duels a Liverpool player did quite well for in the first half. I think people had just decided he was going to have a bad game beforehand and ran with it. He's just such a unique player that people who don't understand the game have to simplify it to attacking=good defending=bad, which has never really been the case.

The Doku stuff reminds me of when Arsenal fans hyped up Pepe dribbling past Van Dijk a few years ago.. while ignoring Van Dijk actually caught back up to him and Pepe ended up doing nothing. Same thing with Trent. Liverpool fans dont think he is amazing defensively. He is fine, average and that is all we need him to be given Liverpool's role for him under Klopp. Trent showed him down the outside mostly and that is all I wanted. Doku will give most defenders fits. No one talks about Roberto Carlos being awful defensively. Marcelo and Dani Alves were average defensively too, but their roles going forward override those things. Cancelo didnt get any criticism until he fell out with Pep too. Countless examples. Imagine Reece James at Liverpool? No 3 CBs, deeper line and negative coaches to hide behind. Then what? Great vid anyways. It wont get through to the knuckledraggers though.

He did well against Doku, since Gary Neville has come on our screens with his backwards views of coaching, he's been crying about Trent being bad defensively. It's a myth, like most defenders he has flaws in certain situations and any good attacker at that level should be comfortable taking on full backs one-on-one. As a manager I'd pick him at RB all the time, he's only divisive amongst fans, most coaches I've spoken to on the continent think he's one of the best. A team getting 90+ points 3 times and reaching 3 CL finals in his 7 seasons, that doesn't happen with a big flaw at full back.
@chicocannon
@chicocannon Жыл бұрын
It's not a myth, his positional sense defensively is horrific. This is also added to his lack of urgency to get back into position. His new role actually makes this even worse but, Salahs work rate supports him massively. Now as for Saturday City just kept giving Doku the ball so it makes sense he had a lot of the ball, but he created almost nothing, not all of those successful dribbles were against Trent

My thinking is...maybe Liverpool utilized City's usual targeting of Trent against them. Like, used it in their favor by letting City focus on trying to capitalize on Trent's defensive weaknesses to score. This would effectively give Liverpool more control in the rest of the pitch. Basically, Liverpool used this as bait and just defended when Doku did manage to get through. If I am correct, then this is bloody brilliant from Klopp, the coaches, and the team.

Trent has always been an attacking player under Klopp. The system from 2017-2020 was two centre-backs, 3 defensive midfielders and 5 attacking players (Robbo and Trent being the wingers, plus the front 3). Defending has never been his primary responsibility. People always talk about him being 'caught out of position' when he is going exactly where his manager tells him to.

I believe the 3-4-3 concept was from our own Pep and approved by Klopp. There was a drop-off in output last year since teams found it easy to block off the right flank. Hence this 3-4-3 / 4-2-4 / 4-2-3-1 hybrid system makes opposing managers think harder.

TAA's versatility (and obviously generational talent of passing) has allowed Mr. Klopp to fill in the holding midfielder's gap, at the end of this season's initial transfer period, no one predicted that Liverpool would be right up there in the league table 'without a proper holding midfielder'. Are the opposition teams' coaches and players too dull to figure out how to break a team without a proper holding midfielder? Liverpool have only lost once in this premier league season, that too with 9 men and in the last seconds, if the team isn't set up solidly, the stats would've been different. MacAllister has adapted very well in the deep sitting midfielder role, Man U tried to do it with Mount, look at them, it's one thing to have an idea, whole other to execute it properly. There's a reason why Klopp has gone toe to toe with a team backed by the money of a whole petro-state and with 115 potential FFP breaches.

I confess I was skeptical about Trent playing in midfield, but I instantly became a believer. Once Trent drifts into the middle of the field with ball, the entire pitch is within easy range of his right foot and most of the pitch is within easy range of his left. His first touch passes forward are an absolute nightmare for the opposition defense, as anyone in the vicinity of the box might suddenly be going on goal.

Now that we've seen what happened with Fulham we looked so much more solid with Endo in CDM. Macca and Szobo are both so forward-facing that it was always going to create issues. Especially that Macca is trying to close and open at the same time. I also honestly feel we don't need all three upfront. I would love to see what would happen with a false 9 (Darwin?) and a true forward (Salah, Jota, Gakpo) and give up the front wings positions. Our goals are coming more from mid buildup than from running down the wing as in past seasons. Correct me please.

I'm largely a Trent admirer. What he offers in possesion and progressively is elite level. He's also improving his tatical acumen and reading of a game by spending more time inside. But I have to say, its a bit disingenuous to say Doku created nothing when he beat Trent. I havent watched the whole game back but I definitely recall one time in the first half he beat him (very easily) and won a corner with a dangerous ball into the box. And in the second half he played a very threateing ball right into the 6 yard box after beating Trent again and Liverpool scrambled it clear. Point being, just because a goal wasnt scored or a big chance created, that's not on Doku when he does his job and beats his man and plays the ball into the right area.

It just shows how few people actually understand that watching highlights doesn’t mean you know anything about the game. Some are just anti-Liverpool… which is simply a matter of wanting to disparage someone regardless of facts. I hate Sevilla, for example (because any team that fields Sergio Ramos is my most hated team)… but I am not going to invent fantasy statistics to defame one of their players. Here is the undeniable truth: Trent provides more assists than any other player, scores goals, and occasionally gets caught out. Ok. Harry Kane dives constantly, so is it fair to say he’s a cheater and shouldn’t be highly regarded? No. Because although he does cheat (which is what diving is), he also provides assists, scores and litany of goals each season and hustles all game. Sergio Ramos is the dirtiest player in the history of the game and is not that great defensively. So is it fair to say he is/has always been a terrible player? No. Because he also is a team leader and scores clutch goals. I hope he snaps both legs each game I watch, but I’m not going to delude myself. Sad how groupthink is so pervasive

When it comes to Trent's defending, he is good at tackling and intercepting. It's his defensive awareness that's shocking. The amount of time Liverpool have conceded game changing goals from Trent's poor awareness, Laziness and/or lack of interest to follow runners is embarrassing for such a high level player. Especially the back post, balls over his head towards the back post Trent switches off and it's basically a Guaranteed goal. I am absolutely convinced that Liverpool would have beaten Madrid in the last UCL final if Trent didn't switch off for Vini Jr and give away that silly goal. Liverpool were the better team that day and Madrid were hanging on for dear life with Courtois making numerous world class saves, that's just the first big game that pops to mind but there has been many, many more I assure you. Now the other side of that, is that he has the best long range passing accuracy of any player in world football. Crossing to the box, cross field switches, first time balls to set the striker through from his own 18 yard box; you name it, this boy can hit long range passes with pinpoint accuracy, swerve and backspin, literally at any point in the game you want and he lands it almost every time. This is what makes it so infuriating for the fans. Some times his defending can be OK and he can look solid when those backpost crosses or certain tracking of run situations aren't required, but it's kinda crazy to me, he would only have to get these parts of his game to an OK level and he would be the best fullback in the world by a MILE. HE ALREADY DOES ALL THE HARD STUFF.

Lets tell the full picture Doku got past Trent multiple times and if it weren’t for poor end product from him and City as a whole you will be singing a different song. For City’s first goal Trent was dribbled too easily by Ake a CB masquerading as a LB whilst in a 2 v 1 with Dominik Szoboszlai supporting him. Just before the goal Trent scored (huge credit btw I’ll never dismiss his offensive contribution) Matip had to cover Trent & he was beaten too easily by Doku fortunately for Trent & Liverpool Alisson made a great save. If a defender is consistently giving up chances down his side either through him directly or indirectly they will eventually amount to goals conceded. Relying on the opposition to be wasteful is simply not sustainable. Trent showed more effort than usual in this game hence the good defensive stats however he is still a liability on that end

Imagine if you showed how many times Luke Shaw gets dribbled past or any other full back 😅 , I mean Reece James had a nightmare and nobody mentioned it , and rightly so because that's what happens I'm football isn't it ? Your winger flies down the wing and puts a cross in regardless of who the full back is.Was Roberto Carlos shite !! Or was he just better at attacking but still an immense full back ? Could show you him being dribbled past and also him putting amazing tackles in and boss free kicks etc etc , Danny Alves another. They hate him cos they aint got him. The same people that call Klopp am amazing manager ( rightly so) then criticise Trent as if Klopp is stupid enough to play a shit full back . YNWA

The point in why he's using last year is because once we switched over to this system lfc closed out the season very well and if the season started from the start of 2023 we'd be in second by I believe 2 pts. So while sure the beginning of the year left a bit to be desired we played the same way for the last 11 matches so it's a truer comparison than let's say 17-18, 18-19, or 19-20. We pressed so much more in such and so much more from the front. The statics would have little to no help in analyzing this years team.

My guy because Trent is in a place where teams can't just sit on him anymore. That's literally the entire point last year ppl were playing so we couldn't use our full backs to aide in our attack. So we had to adjust and this was the move. You're literally saying they're more balanced because they are more in fact balanced but because we can still get Trent the ball and he plays it into szobo, Diaz Nunez or salah then they get the assist or score. When someone's running down the left who he's getting them the ball?? Trent. Just watch the match and Everytime we launch a break it's he or Macalister getting the ball to someone in space

No he doesn't, he's still a RB, he's just inverting in the buildup more often to create the box midfield, instead of just inverting or overlapping when we get into the opposition's third. This is bullshit! I'm a Liverpool fan and I was happy with Trent against City but he has been awful and cost us goals in a lot of games, he was awful against Newcastle away he should of been sent off and gave them their goal and against Villa he was at fault for their goal and gave away another big chance they should of scored to go 0-2 up, he was awful against wolves and got run ragged by Neto in the first half and he has a shocking game against Luton. The guy keeps getting called world class and one of the best RBs in world football but he ain't even close! You need consistency to be a top top player and he has no consistency! He has way more bad games than good and if You watched every game You would know that. He constantly gives the ball away in most games then hits one great pass and everyone forgets the 15 bad ones he done before.
@xxthekingfish

Costing us a goal is fine and well. All our goals we've given up this year in the EPL have been down to lack of concentration. It's been Trent twice this season. But the others have had lapses as well. That being said he's still probably or second or third best player. His impact on our matches is incredible. Also it wasn't just Trent that was asleep to the city goal, szobo got passed as well and matip and VVD were too slow to react. The point of this thing is to have the best team. We defend as a team and when they do that most get nothing. We have a good defensive record and once we do that for 90 minutes a match especially with what we have going forward, we've gotta win the Europa and a domestic cup this year. I feel that's bare minimum.

The flawed defensively argument comes from Pundits, focusing on his errors. If Reece, Walker, and Trippier got half as much focus people would be convinced they were awful defenders.
