I wouldn't blame the award shows. This will continue to occur because our Afrobeats artists have neglected growth. They chase money and fame. They forget that in order for the culture to outlive them, they need to invest in it's growth. They have not built institutions to claim authority in global music landscape. They run to grammy to get a pat on the back. They run to foreign labels who don't really care about the genre. I'm talking about industry growth. We have not built anything to compete with the previously dominant "owners" of global music. This will continue to get worse if the real stakeholders of afrobeats don't wake up and take charge. What makes these award shows big enough to have a say in Afrobeats? Why can't we build our own authority?

Tyla's sound is Afropop (likewise 90% of 'Afrobeats' artists); the most prominent influences are Amapiano and Afrobeats. Top Afrobeats/Afropop producers and songwriters like Sammy Soso, Ari Pen Smith, and P2J capitalised on the Amapiano wave and shaped her Afropop sound. Understandably, Tyla is reluctant to call herself an Afrobeats artist, but the genre heavily influences her music. It's interesting to see her distancing herself from Afrobeats by identifying her sound as unadulterated Amapiano while benefiting the most from the Afrobeats association.

Americans are frustrating us they want to destroy afrobeats the VMA awards for best afrobeats would deserve ayra Starr she does original afrobeats if you listen to songs like stability that's a all vibe seemly tyla didn't also deserve the Grammy imagine songs like calm down were not even nominated those people are not fair
@pump1180Ай бұрын
Firstly you have to understand how the Grammy works. Each label can only submit one artist for a Grammy. Rema and Ayra are signed to the same label and Marvin records decided to summit ayras rush over remas calm down. Thats why it wasn’t nominated. Also water was the biggest song in the category and had the best performance in the nominations. Secondly the VMA’s is a voting show. Fans have to vote for their artists and I don’t remember seeing any Nigerians telling people to go and vote for Ayra but I saw a lot of tylas fans sharing links and making hashtags to get tyla the votes to win.
