Why U.S.-Iran Tensions Are On The Rise In The Persian Gulf

Over the last decade, Iran has been causing more and more headaches for oil tanker operators in the Strait of Hormuz, a central artery of global trade. In the last two years alone, Iran has harassed, attacked or interfered with 15 internationally flagged merchant vessels.
This critical waterway separates the Persian Gulf from the Arabian Sea, which makes it an important conduit for millions of barrels of oil that flow through the region.
"These tanker seizures, whether this is a sheer coincidence or not, is happening around the time that we have just passed the five-year anniversary of the Trump administration withdrawing from the nuclear deal," said Arona Baigal, research assistant for the Middle East Security Program at the Center for a New American Security.
In the most recent incidents, Iran alleges that the tankers Niovi and Purity were seized over separate legal disputes regarding ownership, and that the Advantage Sweet was taken due to a collision with an Iranian ship. In response to Iranian ship seizures, the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, which is responsible for security in the region, announced an increase in patrols. That included the guided-missile destroyer USS Paul Hamilton transiting the strait in late May.
"When you do beef up your presence, you increase your size as a target," said Victoria Coates, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation. "And with the Iranians feeling quite emboldened now, one has to worry about the possibility that they will lash out on a larger scale."
Watch the video above to find out more about why this critical waterway remains key to the global economy, and why Iran's threats to maritime traffic in the region are raising tensions with the U.S.

All the so-called actions of Iran are just following what America has already done. However, the media focuses on Iran's reaction, without saying anything about the first part and the US action. Every action leads to a reaction

The US must destroy the peace between Iran and Saudi, this peace deal is making the the US look bad, its increases China soft power. Russian oil can continue to flow through the Persian Gulf, better not upset the Saudis and India, but Iranian oil is fair game. Anything that will start a war in the region, better still, war with China will keep the US military industrial complex happy, and distract Americans from the political corruption in the country.

That lead to globalisation and because of that 3rd world countries developed into 2nd world countries and then home grown industries. If US stopped policing the oceans everything would've been way more expensive, including things like oil, food, medicine and cloths. Careful what You wish for

It doesn’t work that way. First of all, the oil industry in Iran is owned and operated by IRGC, a terrorist group. The tankers the US seized were shipping oil illegally while their transponders were turned off; a maritime violation and a dangerous and irresponsible act in the strait of Hormuz that is only 29 miles wide. Yes, they should’ve been seized. The tankers IRGC seized didn’t violate anything. IRGC is a terrorist group just like ISIS, and just like Al Qaeda, and they should be treated as such. IRGC is not Iran, and it is certainly not Iran’s national army. Reports like this video misrepresent the entire political landscape of Iran that is driving this conflict.

This is not journalism at all. What you've heard is just the daily propaganda retroric uttered by the Whitehouse press office! What the report hides is that the sanctions on Iranian oil is a US sanction which is legally not obligatory for other countries to abide with. Only UN sanctions obligate all countries to abide with and this is not the case with Iranian oil or other Iranian trade activities. Therefore it is illegal for the US to enforce its own sanctions by force in international waters, it can only do so in its own US territorial lands and waters. This means the US navy is committing an illegal act of piracy when it seazes Iranian ships and tankers outside US sovereign waters. In return this gives the right for Iran to seize any US ships and tankers to recoup its loses and deter the aggression.
@lordhoden
@lordhoden Жыл бұрын
US, EU, Canada, Switzerland and a bunch of other nations have sanctions against Iranian oil. Also youre forgetting that most oil trade is conducted in dollars, which ultimately means the US is in control of that. China uses RMB to buy iranian oil, India uses rupees. The US cant touch that, but it can touch anything that involves US dollars.

@@lordhoden Regardless, even if 99% of nations plus the entire solar system impose sanctions on Iran, still that doesn't give right to these nations to touch Iranian tankers and ships in international waters because only UN security council sanctions give legal legitimacy to do so in international waters. Remember, there's no UN security council sanctions on Iran , only US sanctions and similar ones by a bunch of western countries. So the same also applies to these countries, that is they can only enforce their own sanctions on their own sovereign territories and not outside that.

American citizens are still in the dark because they blindly trust the domestic media or perhaps don't have enough time to study carefully. You should know that there is no legal prohibition by the United Nations to sell Iranian oil in the world market. The US government uses the media to convince its citizens that its territorial laws and its will are the same as international laws and the will of all the people of the world. America is only one country among 206 other countries in the world and it has no right to decide for everyone.

Imagine if the Iranian fleet was positioned in the Gulf of Mexico. Iran had sanctioned US oil sales, based on our continuing to develop long range and nuclear capable missiles. And on top of this Iran kept releasing reports about how everyone needs to now be careful because these US guys are dangerous and they might be feeling emboldened. You know ever since Iran reneged on the JCPOA (aka the sanctions lifting deal). Could you imagine?
@CasterbalTV
@CasterbalTV Жыл бұрын
*While your analogy seeks to promote understanding by painting a picture of a hypothetical reversal of roles, it oversimplifies the complexities of the situation between Iran and the United States. Firstly, it's important to clarify that the US naval presence worldwide isn't an entirely accurate parallel to the hypothetical scenario of an Iranian fleet in the Gulf of Mexico. This global presence is tied to a broad network of alliances and treaties, such as NATO, providing it with international legitimacy. These deployments often serve in peacekeeping roles, supporting mutual defense agreements, and ensuring freedom of navigation in international waters. Secondly, the sanctions imposed by the US are more nuanced than simply a response to the development of missiles. They have been applied largely due to concerns over Iran's nuclear program, which, if not adequately regulated, can pose a significant threat to global security. This concern is shared by many countries and is not unique to the US. Additionally, the JCPOA agreement aimed to ensure Iran's nuclear program was for peaceful purposes in exchange for sanctions relief. It was designed to promote stability and security in the region. Lastly, the portrayal of the US as the sole source of tensions may not reflect the entirety of the situation accurately. It's critical to remember that conflicts are usually multi-dimensional and involve actions and reactions from multiple parties over time. It's rarely a clear-cut case of one nation solely instigating or escalating tensions. Understanding international relations requires acknowledging the complexity and interconnectedness of these issues, not boiling them down to simple cause-and-effect scenarios.*

Who left the JCPOA that was guarantee by security council? How come USA & NATO having nuclear weapons and policing others not to have it? USA is the only country who had used nuclear weapon. How many countries have Iran attacked during last 400 years? If someone agrees to buy Iranian Oil who is the US to stop it? Isn’t just that USA is powerful so it is abusing her power to impose her will on others?

@@CasterbalTV Also worth noting is that the only country in the middle east that is known to have undisclosed nuclear weapons program and long range missiles program is Israel. It is pure hypocrisy to claim that Iran must be regulated at all costs when Israel, a nation with a long history of showing aggression against it's neighbors even it's own citizens, by constantly bombing and killing them would somehow be exempt from such regulation. Also the fact that they receive billions of dollars of US tax payer money each year, yet show no regard for adherence to international laws and standards. The double standards at play are quite obvious to the world.

It accuses the US of illegal activities, such as roaming inside Iran's territory, stealing and confiscating ships, and interfering with Iran's private business. The commenter characterizes the US as a "treasonous big bully" that unlawfully invades Iran and installs puppet governments while exploiting Iran's oil resources. The comment also mentions the US imposing sanctions on Iran, bombing engineering buildings, and targeting Iranian scientists. As far as Turkiye is concerned, Turkish army is in Syria to fight against PKK, YPG which are obviously supported by the USA and its allies. They are not looting any oil or other resources from Syria. That's why there's feud between Assad and Erdoğan. You asked a very good question on where I got that kind of news. I generally don't follow Western media when it comes to countries like Iran, Russia, China etc which are typical anti-Western countries. I follow their own media, for example, Iran's Press TV, Russia's RT which are banned in USA and its Western allied countries. This has to be deliberate. You can't be a journalist covering a story and do zero research. Each and every tanker that the Iranians have seized has been in response to a similar act. This is the first time Iran has seized a tanker with oil bought by Americans, and it is a response to Americans seizing multiple Iranian oil tankers. It seems that the Iranians are seizing tankers and oil based on the value of the load. If they can't get enough value in oil back, they harm the other side by holding the ship longer so it can't haul oil. They did this to the British after they held an Iranian tanker in Spain. The US seized an Iranian ship named Suez Rajan with a gross tonnage of 81,282 tons. This ship, Advantage Sweet, has a gross tonnage of 81,453 tons. See the pattern? They seem to want their viewers to think this action is illegal or hostile, and they are trying to minimize the similar act done by their government.

So who decides whether Iran oil is legal?? UN or the US?? That’s the problem! One country can unilaterally decide Iran oil is illegal!! To these people it’s perfectly ok for US seize Iranian oil but Iran has no right to seize US tankers!! It only makes sense to the western countries
