Maybe it's just me, but I have noticed a big difference in quality between my first pair of Ugg brand boots (tall ones, which I got as a gift over 25 years old that I still wear regularly) and the newer ones (a pair I bought about 5 years ago because I wanted a short pair and I only use around the house). The old ones were made in Australia. I spray them at the start of each winter so they don't get as stained. I changed the insoles once. The new ones aren't as.comfortable and the sole seemed to wear out a lot faster.

The name for the uggs became a common use word in Australia and could not be trademarked and there is evidence of trademark attempts in Australia. The surfer you referred to, visited Australia and then went back to the US and trademarked it there, not in Australia where the term comes from. The American company then claimed it as an international trademark. Ownership of the trademark has never been recognised in Australia, which is why the US company takes Australian companies to court in the US.

Unfortunately with the manufacturing rules from government they still have to source the soles in China and assemble here in Australia. I bought my pair of Uggs 25 years ago. They are a leather bottom boot with a sheepskin boot shaft that covers up to my calves. About two years ago the outsole began to separate from the boot. When I went shopping for a new pair, I couldn’t believe the difference in quality between my old boots and a new pair. I decided to have my local cobbler resole my boots. Honestly, I was shocked to learn that my Ugg boots had outer soles that were attached with glue. Bottom line, since my boot uppers we’re still in perfect shape, I had my local cobbler, Role Club, fabricated a new insole, midsole and Finished off with Goodyear welted Vibram outsoles. The cost was about the same as a new pair. But I am sooooo much happier than had I bought a new pair. I KNOW my Uggs will last me, AT LEAST, another 20 years.

As a fiber artist I can tell you wool is really underrated in modern society which is a shame. Manmade materials don’t come close. Wool is also dirt repellent, so it’s easier to keep clean. The sweaters, socks, hats, etc that I knit are naturally water resistant, insulating, and require fewer washes than even cotton clothes do. Bonus: wool is easier on the environment, both to produce and to clean. Man made materials just suck. Period.

As far as I understand and perhaps you can correct me, navies still equip their fire fighting teams (not the ones that have to go into the hottest areas) with wool uniforms and head covers because wool will also hold back heat, wont catch fire as it's flame resistant and if they have to jump into the sea will hold body heat and even when saturated wont drag a man down, so there's that. Being Irish even though living in France I still have a stack of Aran Island jumpers, envy of the locals :D

Wool is definitely amazing. Merino thermal undergarments are incredible. They keep you warm, but not too warm. They keep you dry, even when they're damp. Best of all, you can wear them for ages and they never get smelly! It's a bloody miracle.

I got a pair of Corporate UGGs when I was like 12 in 2011 at the beginning of the fall and by the time January rolled around they had aquired the foulest wet foot smell and were falling apart. If I would've realized they were meant as slippers instead of regular shoes they would've lasted a lot longer but still even in the winter the only thing I did in them was go to school and come home. I still think they fell apart pretty fast even for slippers tho.

A little history: In Australia ugg is a generic term and the ugg company only just won the rights to call themselves that. They aren’t the inventors of Ugg boots and didn’t come up with that name, should there should be no prestige or high quality associated with name brands uggs. They are good boots even though they are simple though. They will easily last you ten years but aren’t really meant to go outside. I don’t think the association as being somehow girly is really earned or fits with their history. I got my ugg boots from an Australian made company called eagle wools for slightly less than this and they are totally Australian made, but I’m sure that isn’t an option in America. I agree that this price for a boot that is made in China and doesn’t even have the historical prestige of being the inventor of this type of boot (like modern blundstones), is pretty steep.

I agree about the low cost to manufacture. This company really cracked the code a long time ago and their margin on these items is sky high. They also do relatively very little advertising and I’ve watched my daughters over the years by a few pairs as different ones came along. I think people see them as a fun item that is comfortable and warm and with the different styles they can kind of have a different look than the plain brown. Here's the thing Uggs are the brand, but uggs are also the type of shoe. The brand didn't come around until long after uggs were being worn and called uggs in Australia. They were designed as a aprés surf shoe, something warm and dry to wear. Uggs the brand came along and tried to trademark the name, which became the subject of an International lawsuit. They were predominantly men's shoes in Australia. I'd love to see you do some genuine old school uggs from Australia up against, Uggs brand uggs.

Real Uggs come from brands like Emu or Ugg Originals (Emu by the way makes them in the original Uggs factory in Australia). You can also get sheepskin dessert boots and more that are harder wearing. The build quality of the Decker owned Uggs are nothing compared to the proper uggs still made in Australia - and their cheaper! Great work love your videos.

Agree...my Uggs 100% wool. I only wear in Winter & indoors. Have fexible rubber soles that allow movement unlike the rigid sole in the video. I’m with Amy Moon. I’m not paying for the status on a tag, when I know darn well that company got (or keeps) their name by shorting people on quality. Being a sucker is not a good look to advertise, or model to young people. Studies have shown that wearing name brand clothes and shoes is negatively associated with wealth. I’m a little embarrassed when I wear the Decker Ugg label, as opposed to my imported Australian ones, because they’ve gotten a name for cheap construction, over the years. Uggs are for surfing (originally made for the surfies as warm shoes in colder months, only worn to the beach where ordinary dress codes do not apply), sitting around a campfire out bush where only your mates will see you, and inside the house. If you wear them down the shops you're deemed a no hoper, the same as wearing your PJs in the street. I have my house uggs and my bush uggs with reinforced soles, I wouldn't be seen dead outside with them on.

These boots aren’t really boots. They’re basically house slippers and for surfers. These style of boots started in Australia and were made for surfers to wear after a day out on the waves to slip into and keep their feet warm. More often they’re actually worn more as house shoes and rarely, if ever, worn outside of the house like we do in the states. In short, Americans don’t wear these as they’re intended to be used.

I wear a brand called Emu. I think they are stronger, they have a strong formed heal cup. I have got difficult wide feet, but the older Emus had a loose inner sole with a bit of an arch support. Very good for me because I have my own orthoptic inner soles and put them under Emu soles, so I can still feel the glorious fleece and my toes are warm, no socks. Emu changed the boots, no loose inner sole and narrower, because women prefer their looks to comfort. They have many different styles now, but I still like my old boots. Problem is the toes have small holes. Soles are still okay. Also quite pricey, but a bit more affordable. Must tell you the truth, they are really my indoor shoes, but worth every penny to keep this 70 year old lady's feet warm. A leather toe and heel cap would be a good idea, but could you imagine the price.

I have Ugg slippers that I received as a christmas gift a few years back. When I opened them, I said to myself "I will never put these things on my feet." Now several years later, I have completely worn them out, and wear them every day when I'm around the house lounging. They wear out quickly, but they are super comfy, very warm, and incredibly easy to slip on. All I can say is that if I tried to wear them outside of the house I'm sure they would be in pieces by now but I do love them.

My first pair felt awesome, super comfy and got them 12 years ago. They are awful in the rain or snow, your feet get absolutely drenched and the boots stay wet for days. The wool inside gets matted after a handful of wears and isn't soft after that. I had the spray and brush but it didn't help with staining over time. I liked how comfy they were initially and that was it, never wanted another pair. Sorel or Kamik for Canadian winters.

I've only worn uggs once when I got my shoes sopping wet and my sisters uggs were the only option and even from that I could tell they were cheaply constructed. So funny enough, I wound up with my pair of uggs as an accident. In 2014, freshman year, my school had set up a bounce house, and I was one of the last people out. The only pairs that were left out were some tennis shoes, and "my" boots. I went to put my boots back on, and left. I got home, and FINALLY noticed something was kind of off. Turns out, somewhere along the lines, my boots got swapped out with someone else's, and I now have a pair of name brand lookalike uggs, rather than my cheapie aeropostale ones! I can only imagine how mad the girl's mom probably got at her for mistaking my boots for hers... And I honestly preferred the cheapies. They were much softer, whereas these are rougher and I can feel them where my skin's exposed between my sock and pants.

I had uggs in 2009 and those were supposed to be warmest shoes available in the market. But Australian shoes just can't be made for Siberian winter. Snow was sticking to them and melting and water was leaking through the seams resulting in cold wet toes. Also they were extremely slippery. I have Ugg Australia boots I got secondhand for $60. Just wore them tonight and walked a little bit in them. I definitely don't consider them an outdoor boot.. but I walk pretty comfortably in them, and they keep me warm and are very cozy. I work them tonight to with leggings to be basically in pajamas and it was very comfortable. I'm really happy with them. It's not something that I'd wear for outdoor activity, but it's great for lounging.

I used to buy UGGs almost new or never worn on auction on ebay for a fraction of the price in the summer. I bought them for as little as £9. I used to prefer the cardigan ones. They destroyed my feet along with ballet flats and now I have plantar fasciitis and I'm pretty sure I have a heel spur. They might feel comfortable at first but in reality they have no arch support. I wish someone would have told me to wear them with orthotics. UGGs don't actually wear out particularly quickly. Rene, its all about the sheepskin, density of wool, it's meant to be plush, thick and wraps itself to your feet. Then as the wool gets compacted shapes to your feet, then they're yours, hence the warm relationship so many of us have with them. Look to the density of the wool, it should be dense fibres and perfectly teased to a perfect pile. The wool on those looked scraggly in comparison to what a good quality pair of uggs should be. Much like eating Mexican food in Australia, versus San Diego, they call it Mexican here, but it's a far cry from the Mexican I had in CAL... same same.

I’ve had Ugg for over 10 years, probably my favorite shoe when it gets cold, for me the biggest issue is the discoloring that happens from rain and salt (the salt that’s the ground, so we don’t fall on icy parts). Despite yo being wrong with the woolly interior being horrible with sand (Uggs are house-boots: for cold winters walking around the house, where the floor is cold), compare Uggs to Crocs. Crocs are also very ugly, but comfy, shoes designed for a specific purpose (warm weather boating). But Crocs don't suck because they cost an appropriate amount ($35). Uggs are worth $80 at most (Sheepskin is enough to really boost the value), especially with where they're manufactured, but cost $170. So they are horrible $170 boots.

Wool is my favourite material for clothing! In Austria we have quite a lot of traditional clothing (mostly coats and jackets) made of Loden - a special type of cloth made of wool. It’s extremely sturdy and great for all weather conditions’

The confusion regarding “UGG” the brand owned by Decker and “UGG made in Australia” is down to the fact that In Australia, ugg is a generic, descriptive term for this style of boot. Saying ugg boots there is like saying cowboy boots in the USA. Decker capitalized on this, popularized the style as a brand, UGG and now sells cheap Chinese made boots as though it is an Australian brand. It would be interesting to see a cut in half Australian-made pair of ugg boots to see the differences in materials and workmanship.

In terms of price, I believe the company is also banking on the name and notriety. In Australia, the term "ugg" is a catch-all for all boots of that type. The company (now owned by Deckers according to Wikipedia) has since tried to assert a trademark on the name "UGG". Kinda like how some people call tissues "Kleenex" but, for ugg, the name was around before the company/brand.

Would love to see a breakdown of uggs alternatives as well as an (or your) attempt at a high end ugg with a leather lasting board or insole!

I have a pair in black and I love mine. I have had them for about 🤔 ten years now? They still look great because I don't wear them in the rain or snow. Very warm and I consider a good investment. But to each their own.

I have 2 pair of uggs that I have had for over 10 years and are still in good shape. No complaints. Very comfy to wear in the winter. I dont live in a harsh climate though. Perfect southern California winter wear.

I had a pair of the “real UGG” before they were famous. I’m born and raised in CA and surfers were wearing these uglies long before Oprah ever heard of them. The quality of those cannot be compared to the fast fashion they churn out today. They were like snuggling up to my Icelandic sheep, Uhtred. 😊

You're 100% spot on! The quality is in the skin and feel and not the cobblers craft. They were called UGGs because they look primitive and they are .. It's so hard to describe the ugg experience unless you've owned and loved your own pair for that warm, cosy place you can dive your feet into when you don't want to wear shoes, or even warm up your feet. They've gotten expensive in Australia too since the legal battles over the name.

I had a pair of uggs from 2004ish and recently re purchased in 2019. The quality was SO different! I would love if you could hunt down a more vintage pair of uggs to compare to todays!!!

Paid $20 for a non brand pair at a local store. FOUR YEARS Ago!! Still have them for spring and autumn, late summer in Vancouver. Great boots. I did put an extra in sole in myself after 2years however, I can't imagine uggs being so hardy😂🤣

I bought my Uggs 20 years ago. I wear one everyday during the winter and it held up just fine. The insoles are finally flattened so I need to replace it. I’ve worn it in the rain when I’m not suppose to. I barely cleaned it today but it’s not really dirty either. I felt it was worth every penny spent on it. It was $130. I haven’t purchase any new ones since then so I’m not sure how the quality is nowadays.

Well, I just did some research and it appears that you may have purchased a pair of UGG boots that were made in China. The original boots are made in Australia and if they were made there, they sew a tag inside the boot stating this fact. They sold their patent to the USA, the Netherlands and a few other countries. So if you want the best pair of UGGs, buy them from the original manufacturer in Queensland. I just purchased a pair of mens slippers, size 49.5 for my son-in-law, which were made in the Netherlands and I paid about 90€ for them and they look durable, soft, but strong and have stitching all the way around them. It's a Christmas gift, which I believe he will love.

I have ugg boots that are made locally. Best investment, last for years and the warmest winter slippers even. I sometime waterproof the outsides so i can wander around the grounds in winter. Love them

Interesting video. Thanks! I don't think it is the brand that is the problem but rather the model. I have a different model of Uggs which have lasted me for the past 4 years (doing a lot of walking in town and out of town in the country side, short hikes and beach during the wet and cold season. They are super comfortable but have lost a bit of their waterproof -ness.

UGGS aren't a waste of money if you can buy a new pair on eBay for around $80 USD or less! They are basically a boot version of the L.L. Bean Wicked Good Slippers that are shearling-lined. Also, "windproof" implies that wind cannot blow through the material. If you had ever driven a motorcycle, you would know the term. Have you ever seen a motorcyclist with a jacket that looks all puffed up with air in the back? That's not windproof. Now consider another driver with a jacket that's not filled with air. That material is windproof. The same goes for shoes, boots and slippers. I would argue UGGS are a modified and cheaper version of the famous Canadian Mukluk. Many of those are waterproof with Vibram soles, too. Look for the deals. They're out there.

For an alternative, back in the early 2000s when Uggs were first getting popular I got a pair of Rocket Dog boots that looked almost exactly like uggs. The sole was a much thicker rubber and as far as I know it wasn't sheepskin on the inside. I still use them occasionally when I shovel and they actually hold up pretty well. I'd be curious about the comparison

I bought my pair about a yr ago...black bailey bow, short with one bow...and I have three pairs of knock offs and because I never owned a pair that was made back in the day, the difference is insane...I can tell how good they feel over a pair of Wal Marts...mine were 218...still over priced though for sure...
