I have only contacted my MP on one occasion regarding a non payment of tax demand with bailiffs notice. I thought might be a scam so immediately contacted my MP just to check. It turned out to be genuine but sent to my address in error. The intervention lead to a bouquet of flowers being sent from the Inland Revenue with an apology. The day the flowers arrived was, by coincidence, exactly 6 months to the day since my Mum passed away and hours before I attended the cremation of a close friend Not the most important thing an MP has ever done, but how often do you hear about the taxman sending flowers out ?

As a teenager I was a complete politics nerd. I lived for this stuff; read all the books and watched everything I could. I even went on to study this madness at university (for the UK and the US as well) - I'm 40 now and although I still keep up, politics has gone so batsh*t crazy over the last decade or so that I find myself hiding behind the couch whenever something related to politics comes on the TV or up in conversation. Essentially, I've gone in the exact opposite direction to Mike.

I've been fortunate to visit Parliament, witnessing historical aspects and events, as well as worked with the Government and it's ministers. I've also been lucky enough to have given a speech/talk at an event held within the House of Lords, and even had a meeting within 10 Downing Street. It's reassuring to know that we're lucky enough here in the UK to have such an institution (in spite of the imperfections) that underpins our society within the UK, and a privilege to have been in the midst and contributed in events in a small way. Like Mike, as I've aged I've appreciated and taken a greater interest as my life journey continues, learning so much more about the World first-hand and what I've observed. The counter-balance that's provided by the Lords, The Crown, the armed forces, the judiciary (laws) are all essential components to holding the House of Commons and the Government accountable, and ensuring the stability of our nation.

We actually have more, but most do only focus on those two parties. Here's more info on it. "In U.S. presidential elections, while the two major political parties (Democrats and Republicans) dominate, voters typically have more than two choices. In addition to the candidates from these major parties, third-party candidates (e.g., from the Libertarian or Green Party) and independent candidates may also appear on the ballot, depending on state laws and ballot access requirements. So while many people focus on the two main candidates, there are often several other options available to voters."

You have a similar system where your prime minister is chosen from only two parties: Labour or Conservative. These parties often don't allow the elected prime minister to complete their term. If a prime minister resigns, the parties can elect their own prime minister with the same mandate that you gave to someone else in the election. Nonetheless, UK citizens have other choices in Parliament. They can choose to give other parties seats. For example, a party might get 30 seats in one election, then 100 in the next, and then a simple majority in the following election but they don't do this. However, in the US, votes for other presidential candidates don't count, and your vote is wasted.

Good afternoon to you both. Just to clarify there is no democracy in British politics, during a National election you vote for a local MP (who represents the party you support). The party who gets the appropriate number of elected MPs is declared the winner and forms government. The local MP is meant to represent the needs and views of the population who elected them (constituents) BUT they very often vote against their own constituents and support their leader (the Prime Minister) as it helps their career. In parliament MPs are not permitted to use certain language (such as accuse someone of lying even when they are) otherwise the Speaker of the House banishes them from the house for a period meaning the MPs constituents have no representation in parliament, so electing a local MP is about fulfilling the wishes of the Prime Minister NOT the people who elected them

This system is a parliamentary democracy by way of proportional representation. I suspect the system you would think of as a "democracy" would be the classical Athenian model. Although, that wasn't really a "democracy" either. But point well made. The very fact an MP is beholden to their constituents and party means they will often vote poorly. I think removing the ability for constituents to vote on their MP's would greatly alleviate the problem. Most constituents don't know their arse from their elbow yet we expect them to vote on matters they will never put any effort into learning about. If one were to quiz randoms on the street about 5 major policies you'd get a mixture of rhetoric and blank stares.

At least we've got the freedom of speech to voice our discontentment and scepticism. Perhaps the fact there's a significant tranche of sceptical folks is one of the markers of a democratic society.
@RandomShart
@RandomShart 11 күн бұрын
Whichever way they vote, they'll make some of their constituents happy and others unhappy. To say there's no democracy because your local MP doesn't vote exactly the way you personally want them to vote is a bit if an exaggeration, to put it mildly. Remember they are there to represent all of their constituents, regardless of who voted for them in the election. I do believe however that most of the voting public generally are voting for the least worst option, which is quite sad. I've never been inspired to vote for anyone because there is no vision or inspiration in modern politics.
@martin-hall-northern-soul
@martin-hall-northern-soul 11 күн бұрын
@@RandomShart Obviously it's your right to vote or not vote but personally I've never understood why anyone would be happy to be governed by an MP representing everyone else's views. Other people are voting and your life is impacted by laws you've literally had no say in. The influence of the individual voter may be neglible, but it's not zero. Individual votes form blocks of votes which certainly do direct policy. MP's may have a moral responsibility to represent all constituents, but what's the motivation to further the concerns of those who don't vote at all? An MP has enough on their plate appealing to voters. If you don't vote, how is anyone ever going find out you feel like there's no vision or inspiration in any of the options? We even have choices on the UK ballot papers for people who believe that i.e. Count Binface or your local independents :) Non voters = non factor.

The main difference between the US & the UK is that in the UK we vote for a party to rule for the 5 years of a parliament. So even if the Prime Minister resigns that will not necessarily trigger another election and the ruling party can just elect the next Prime Minister in, eg before the GE this year we have had 4 Prime Ministers since the last election who were voted in by MPs only and not the voting public

The House of Commons is sort of like the US House of Representatives. The country is split up into 650 constituencies (what you'd call Districts) and each elects one MP. The candidate who gets the most votes wins - but because we have more than 2 parties you can have the most votes while not having >1/2 of all the votes. At our most recent election (July 2024): 13 different Parties were elected to the House of Commons + 6 candidates who were Independent of any Party. After all the MPs are elected, whichever Party won the most gets to form the Government. Their Party Leader (who is elected by their public members) becomes the Prime Minister, and the other senior members of the Party become the Cabinet. If that Party has an absolute majority of all the MPs that's simple, if they don't have a majority they might need work with a other party to get that majority. The House of Lords is akin to the Senate as the Upper Chamber - except unlike the Senate it is much less powerful. The House of Lords doesn't decide the Government. Doesn't have a say on financial matters and can only ever delay legislation not completely block it. This is because the House of Lords is unelected. It is mostly made up of "Life Peers", people who have been chosen by the sit in the Chamber for their life because of their expertise in a certain field. There are also 92 members who are from the historic Noble families and 26 Bishops - this is a historic element which many people oppose. The current Government plans to abolish these Hereditary Peers some time soon. The King's Role is Ceremonial and Advisory. The Monarch must formally grant their assent to every Bill (like how the US President has to sign Bills) - but this assent has not been refused for over 300 years. A key difference between the UK and US Systems is that the Prime Minister and the Cabinet sit in Parliament, unlike the American ones which are separated. So Ministers have to be able to answer for their policies and achievements directly. Another big difference is we don't have set dates for the Election. Elections must happen at least every 5 years, but the Prime Minister can (and usually does) decide to call them earlier.

That video expressed how Democracy was in the UK BEFORE the establishment of the Nations DEVOLVED Parliaments! SCOTLAND/WALES AND NORTHERN IRELAND have their own parliaments and the Scottish Parliament has the right and does raise its own taxes! So crime, housing, transport, education etc comes under that Jurisdiction whereas the Westminster Parliament deal with reserve issues such as defence/foreign policy/some social security! Of course Westminster still deals with all of the above with regards to England

@16:45 Could it be that the design of the US political system makes it vulnerable to corruption? Too much power could be centralized in one person, the president. Isn't that a major reason (similar in many ways) that the king or queen changed their position into a ceremonial one? Transfer the real power to parliament? Not a fail proof guarantee, but certainly a huge improvement.👴🤷‍♂

Seems a bit strange to have a president that wants a certain policy but can't bring it in because he doesn't have the power in the senate,Congress,or whatever. And what's with all the shutdowns over paying government employees?
@nzlemming
@nzlemming 10 күн бұрын
(Not a US citizen or resident BTW) It's not that too much power is invested in the President that is the problem. It's money. Too much power is invested by the lobbyists. If what happens with American legislators at federal, state, and county levels) happened anywhere else in the world, as blatantly as it does there, it would be called bribery and corruption and people would be going to jail. The power is in Parliament. The monarch has no power. All they do is spend public money on themselves and give Royal Assent to Acts of Parliament, and the last time assent was denied was 1708. It's totally ceremonial. The design of the system in the US *is* the problem, but it's not because of the separation of powers. It's because the only people who can prevent corruption are the people who are being corrupted (e.g. Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Senator Bob Menendez, and all the others). The design of three branches is a good one, and is followed in essence, if not precise form, by democracies around the world - executive, legislative and judicial branches. In the UK (and other Westminster-based systems) the PM and Cabinet, along with the Civil Service, are the executive branch; the Houses of Parliament are the legislative branch; the Supreme Court are the judicial branch (used to be the Privy Council, and still is for Commonwealth countries who have it in their constitutions). Since Citizens United ruled that corporations can give as much as they want to politicians, it's got a lot worse, but it was always pretty bad. Capitalism, raw and unfiltered has this effect. The UK has it's own corruption problems, but it's nowhere near as bad as the USA.

Just a point. Every single person over the age of 18 who is eligible to vote MUST be registered on the country's electoral roll. This means everyone eligible has the right to vote in an election. You can't opt out of not being on the electoral roll, though of course you do have the right to not vote if you don't wish to. A form is sent directly to every household compelling the people in the household to complete the form and to be put onto the electoral roll.

Firstly Jess so glad you have good diction 'master debater' could have got messy, pun intended. Our system is not perfect but the beauty is that the public can have a real say when they are passionate enough about a a subject. Two that come to mind was the change in Uk gun laws fater Dunblane and the law change for harsher sentances for those who kill front line workers after the death of a policeman.The campain was lead by his widow. Both of those changes were law within two years or less. The big difference between UK and US government is that unlike the US, private companies or business are not permitted to lobby Government to influence policey or laws. Where as in the US any proposed changes for say workers rights are often shouted down by those with the most money i.e. the corporations who want to keep their money. Not Joe Public who actually voted for the politicians in the first place. Here whether you are Labour or Conservative or other your vote can matter. In this last election so many people were annoyed with Richie Sunak and the Conservative Gov. as a whole the huge swing to Labour or other parties annihilated the Tories. That sort of swing would never happen in the US as areas are too entrenched with one of the two parties and the fact you only have TWO parties means little competition. Also one thing he didnt mention is our pre election campaining only is allowed for 6 weeks prior elections not 1 year plus.

When you see the Chamber of the House of Commons, you need to understand that there are 650 MPs, but not all of them can have a seat. There is only room for 427 bums on seats. The rest have to stand. This is like the House of Representatives only having room for 400 rep to be seated. It's insane. No other governing body in the world does this. But they won't build a new Chamber because tradition (and cost). It's insane.

Like Mike, I have been drawn into politics more and more as I age. We have too many political parties, especially left of centre parties (more caring of society and more inclusive of all people) and only one right of centre party (until recently, a party for the rich and wealthy and who don’t represent the poor). Sadly our First Past the Post voting system sees the right wing party (Conservatives) win most elections, simply because they have (until recently) taken all right of centre votes. The left of centre voters vote for one of the many left of centre parties, dividing the left of centre votes, allowing the right of centre party to win seats. Traditionally the UK voters are generally left of centre and at most elections the left of centre parties receive more votes than the Conservatives, but our system allows for the Conservatives to regularly win elections, despite the majority voting against them. It’s a messed up and unfair system that needs change. The House of Lords also needs reform as it has many people in it who have bribed their way in, although they will call the bribes made to the various MPs and political parties donations. Members of the House of Lords receive a tax free, daily payment of £332 ($445) for doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING but for just signing in. They can then use the highly subsidised (by the taxpayers) bars and restaurants. It’s a corrupt system.

The house of Lords needs abolished, it's little more than a retirement home for ex politicians and has no real power. Members can simply show up, sign themselves in, then bugger off home again two minutes later and get almost the equivalent of a weekly wage in a day for the privilege. subsidised meals, expenses... the whole thing is a mess. It's a complete drain on public finances. Also, since Brexit, we no longer vote in European elections.

They're called the "exempted Hereditary Peers". They are still in the House because they hold substantive hereditary noble titles.
