Why Ultimate Spider-Man is the best SPIDER-MAN game yet

Firstly solid video and good editing and audio. However I do disagree with some things I don’t think it’s fair to use rhino boss fight and comparing it to a regular crime in ps4. Also the insomniac games have enemies that can block your attack but you can counter it with webbing them. Where as ultimate webbing doesn’t hold them long and mixing attacks only sometimes work. Also yes you can regenerate but it’s a risk reward thing. In ps4 you can either heal yourself or do special takedowns. As well he doesn’t heal on his own you have to make that choice As well when you get hit in ps4 your combo goes down and that matters cause the higher your combo the faster focus you make. Also yeah Spider-Man an acrobatic character is going to dodge while fighting. As for the mj and miles stuff I understand and to an extent agree. They aren’t as good as venom but they do add to narrative. Mj and miles have a character arc just like Venom. As well mj and miles are regular humans it makes sense for them to feel similar. Also that’s the point of Mj and miles feeling weaker because as I said they’re regular people 😂. Look at Miles handling Rhino he’s seen as some big terrifying enemy. However as Pete he’s just seen as a normal boss. As for the boss fights I don’t fully disagree but you could argue that you rinse and repeat as well. You say “you just dodge and throw things and web” at otto. Which is true but for rhino you do the same thing. Just dodge until his back is vulnerable Don’t get me wrong I do agree that ultimate does have better bosses but I just feel the comparisons you were using weren’t the best The suit complaint is odd because you have to craft and earn them. Just cause it isn't as hard as ultimate doesn't mean it's not rewarding. Collectibles being easy to find is odd to complain about cause you don't like it when they're hidden in ultimate yet it's a problem when they're shown in ps4. As well it's justifiable to do side activities cause it upgrades Pete and giving you new abilities and gadgets upgrades as well when you craft a new suit you get a new suit power. Also it's not insane to prefer ultimate over ps4. Both are good games I love ultimate but it's not impossible for someone to say ps4 is better.

You make some very solid points especially with the low ball we did in comparing rhino to civilian missions and how we sorta disrespected the significance of Miles and MJ in the narrative of Spiderman PS4. Just to let you know, my name is Ryan, I am one of the 3 sods that run the channel. The guy who wrote this video is called theo and I helped out with the script here and there. So in writing this we were thinking about how to approach a game that although Theo absolutely loves, is undeniably the less popular spiderman game compared to Spiderman PS4. At first, the idea of a proper comparison video that compared the priorities and game philosophies of each game was being thrown around in the first drafts of the script. We were thinking about comparing the narrative priority of Spiderman PS4 and how much more important that was for for gaming community at the time of 2018 with the more arcade and traditionally themed priorities of Ultimate Spiderman. However, we eventually landed upon the idea of letting Theo just absolutely Stan the crap out of Ultimate spiderman and make a piss take on spiderman ps4. He loves Ultimate Spiderman after all and it was the more entertaining and less obvious option that would give Ultimate spideman the attention it deserves which is the priority with these videos (giving underrated games a chance in the spotlight). If we compared the 2 games more formally, viewers would take it as an option to favour one or the other which to most viewers, would be spiderman ps4. So ultimately, in our intention to prioritise giving Ultimate spiderman the spotlight, we low balled spiderman ps4 with admittedly several unfair arguments. Well, at least that's the way I see it. I'm personally more of a fan of Spiderman PS4 and theo obviously prefers Ultimate as you've seen in the video so we try our best to just focus on the priorities of the video and making it entertaining rather than waffle about making our arguments fair (after all this is a KZbin video about games, not a PhD thesis). But don't worry, we will eventually get around to making a video on Spiderman PS4 and tackle it with the depth it deserves. Stay tuned for that! It really shows us the great potential of how masterful it can get when insomniac takes it further upon future sequels... especially in Spider-Man 2.

​@@youngspecial64 It really isn't! Besides all the flashy moves and gadgets and finishers. When it comes to straight combat and making combos it's not that deep. I have played most of all the Spider-Man games and I can say Spider-Man 2 and 3 have more combat variety. Especially if you played the PS2 and Wii versions. Ultimate Spider-Man has a pretty decent combat system as well. If you have even played Web of Shadows then you'll know what you said was very laughable. Spider-Man has many moves he can do with his Regular and Black suit. That alone is already double the move set. So not much argument anyone could make for Insomniacs spider-man there. I have yet to see a Spider-Man game come close to that level of combat. So I wouldn't call insomniacs first outing with spider-man peak because there are MANY things to be improved in the sequel. The first game is as wide an ocean and deep as a puddle.

Ultimate is not a bad game it just couldn’t get out of Spider-Man 2’s shadow. Sort of the same situation with the two Arkham games that came out after Arkham City. Origins and Knight aren’t bad but Arkham City was such a huge step forward.

This game and the original 2002 movie is the reason I fell in love with Spider-Man as a kid. I liked this game so much I started reading the ultimate comics. This game was so good it became CANON to the comics. This game is at its best if you have a pc copy which is near impossible now. The suit mods for spiderman and venom and resolution fixes are incredible and make it infinitely replay-able. Honestly the treyarch era of Spider-Man games was truly something special. Post-web of shadows was not the same until insomniacs Spider-Man manage to relight the spark for me. There are many aspects to what makes a good Spider-Man game great but really only needs one aspect to make it replay-able. Either amazing story or amazing free roam/wed-swinging. Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 and Web of shadows were able to do both and I can acknowledge the flaws of insomniacs storytelling and combat gameplay but the story is still compelling and web swinging is cinematic. I think there are a lot Spider-Man fans out there who don’t know these games exist because they are sheltered by the movies which makes me believe that the general Spider-Man fanbase doesn’t understand Spider-Man. Some of the best Spider-Man materiel are the videos games like ultimate and edge of time and I’m so glad to see ultimate getting the recognition it deserves recently.

I've beaten this game over 15 times since I got it as a kid. Ultimate Spider-Man has way better music, better difficulty, skill based swinging, and unique boss fights, and the shorter run time means there's constant action. While Spider-Man PS4 has the better story, move variety, and cinematic feel, it definitely lacks in those areas. From a purely gameplay perspective, USM is king. But that level of gameplay fluidity is why PS4 appears better to most. Play PS4 if you want big budget game, but play Ultimate if you want the most well rounded Spiderman experience. Also here's some USM tips you may not know: Alternating Punch and Kick increases damage. This works on bosses. Alternating between punching different enemies does more damage. Venom can use tendrils to pull an enemy in for a back break by pressing tendril then grab buttons. If you throw a car straight up as Venom it will explode in midair. You can swing at an enemy and press kick midair for a "swing kick." While webbing a guy rotate the left stick to spin throw them. During the Electro boss fight, super jump as venom and use tentacles on the TV screens, way more effective than trying to throw cars at them. Web a guy near a lamp post and press jump to stick them up there temporarily. You can wall run for longer if you tap the grab button instead of holding it. Electro's grandma moves faster than the speed of sound. Thanks but I had a fireball FOR LUNCH!!

I loved playing Ultimate Spiderman when I was younger. Personally if I were to rank the Spiderman games I've played, I would put these ones in the top 3: - Ultimate Spiderman - Marvel's Spiderman (Spiderman PS4) -The Amazing Spiderman 2 I absolutely adored the suits in The Amazing Spiderman 2 and I am honestly very happy that they included so many suits in the newer games.

The complaint about regenerating health on Spider-Man PS4 is kinda nonexistent if you play on the hardest difficulty, which is where the game shines imo; with the damage increase to enemies and bigger health bars, combat is much more deadly and engaging, especially in the DLC’s with the mini gun brutes and shield thugs with jet packs, I have to choose between using a special to take out tough opponents or regenerating health, similar to The Last of Us where med kits and Molotovs take the same materials

I haven't forgotten Ultimate Spider-man. When I finished the remastered vversion of 2018's game I remembered how much sweat I have put as a kid fighting the Goblin or chasing Johnny Storm. The only thing which came close to this difficulty was acing all of Screwball's and Taskmaster's challenges. The rest of the game was just too easy. And I know it's Spider-man - arguably one of the most op characters in comics/gaming history, but as you said the bosses were just boring and too easy and more than half of the game felt like a movie rather than a game. Cutscenes, quick time events and dumbed down enemies really took away of the charm of Marvel's Spider-Man.

This game definitely deserves way more praise and I don't get why it's rarely mentioned. Imo it outclasses Spiderman 2 in almost every way (except I can see why people prefer the swinging in 2). Actually, it's legit the only pre Spiderman PS4 open world Spidey game with good writing and voice acting. Basically every other one either had the movie actors half assing it or just spiderman whining. It's also surprising to me how the old game has way less busy work than the new one. Spiderman PS4 on a first playthrough is fine but doing anything besides NG+ is a chore. So many of the cool unlocks and upgrades are behind endless collectables and meh side content. And that's not including the "stealth" sections where you don't play as Spidey. I still think PS4 is the best Spiderman game for many reasons, but Ultimate is the second best no doubt.

I heavily agree on the boss fights in Spider-Man ps4, they can be sorta cheap and lackluster with they're "Complexity" or challenge. But... we should all know that bosses will be fixed in number 2 when we literally just witnessed Miles Morales! In miles morales, the boss fights were pretty improved, and the one boss that i REALLY loved the most was the tinkerer... that junk never havd repeated animations, no, insomniac put in thought to make it fun. That makes me more excited for Spider-Man 2... as Spider-Man ps4 was the foundation for EVERYTHING! Just imagine when they take it further in Spider-Man 2. For bosses to be at they're freaking PEAK, the combat system needs to be at it's peak; more expanded and layered depth for the combat is what's needed for that to happen. I can see so much potential on what they can do for the combat in Spider-Man 2.. and if they take it further, the bosses can honestly be masterful this time. The one character i want to see return to fight against within the sequel, especially when were in the Black Suit, is the freaking Taskmaster. His boss was ok at best in Spider-Man ps4, but on God they can take it further in Spider-Man 2... they should really take some great inspiration from the Deathstroke boss in Arkham Origins.

1. Double jump makes no physical sense, eventho it's a superhero game. Spidey ps4 webswinging is more "realistic" which makes it better. That ultimate spidey webclimb is my shit tho 2. I like ultimates combat a lot in terms of pacing and wall bounce attacks. But spidey dodging is literally the whole point of his spidersense, this and the finishers alone makes spidey ps4 combat better. I can do without the gadgets and the healing factor, eventho that makes more sense than picking up healing items. Spiderman can actually heal in canon. 3. Comparing Venom who is 50% ultimate spiderman to MJ and Miles makes no sense. But yeah Venom being playable in the game at all is a point for Ultimate. 4. Ultimate Spidey is better in terms of bossfights indeed because it offers more variety and more colorful villains. Spidey ps4 is more cinematic and its cool when u fight 2 bosses at once, but datsit. 5. Free roam is WAY better in ps4. Collectibles are actually do able, theres more side activities to do, who cares about racing. And the rewards are cool. You get more suits and they are BETTER. So lemme get this straight... regenerating in Spider Man PS4 is bad because it makes things too easy, but Venom being able to do the same thing without any costs is just- ok? Like, I get that Venom's health deplets constantly and you have to keep eating people to survive, but again, literally no costs or risks because as you said, no one can even attack him while he's doing that. Spider Man PS4 has you juggle regenerating with finishers and if you don't do that then you're going to get your ass kicked, ESPECIALLY in the higher difficulties. Not saying it's the hardest game in the world even then, but then again, neither is Ultimate. And what kind of stupid argument is that having LESS suits is better because they're more "rewarding"? Are you serious? Having five suits, most of them looking the same and not changing shit, is better than having dozens that actually give you different abilities to use, and all of which you have to do side quests and work to unlock? I don't disagree at all that Ultimate is a great and underrated game, but you can point that out without making up ridiculous excuses as to why it's actually better than the more popular one. It honestly just comes across as disingenuous more than anything.

That's great and all but Spider-Man 2 is still the greatest with insomniac's efforts being 2nd best. The only reason i put Ultimate at 3rd is because of the 2 single most important factors, traversal and combat. First off I love how you can climb your web lines and the system allows for freedom but doesn't have as much deapth as 2 and to me felt a bit clunky. Combat was always fun, very acrobatic, even brutal sometimes, but the fact there's no dodge button irritates me, plus i cannot hold on to an enemy and throw them off the tallest building lol. Ultimate does have better boss fights and a MEMORABLE OST though, not to mention that timeless art style

I agree mostly except for the double jump. It makes zero sense for Spiderman so I'm not a fan and try to use it as little as possible. The charge jump from spiderman 2 was way better

While I understand that Peter Parker is a techie, I've always preferred versions of Spider-Man with a simpler toolset than ones that are basically Marvel Batman with the amount of gadgets and advanced technology at his disposal.

I'ma say this. Spider-Man ps4 was simply the foundation for the greater future of it's gameplay. And if that foundation is like that... Just imagine when they explore and expand it further within future sequels! The people that made the system for combat and traversal in Spider-Man ps4 are back to work on Spider-Man 2... and oh buddy, now that the foundation is set in place, just IMAGINE what they will do when they actually *UNLEASHE* they're creative minds and add more layers, depth, complexity, and mechanical veriety that will bring out this combat and traversal system's greatest potential. Like how Arkham Asylum was Rocksteady's foundation, they completely took it further within the sequel. I swear to gosh man, Spider-Man 2 has the potential to be a SEVERE Spider-Man masterpiece... hell, this will be the Arkham City for Spider-Man in general! But though, we shall see of what insomniac has to offer us... but man, do i have great faith in them to surprise so many of us. Especially when it regards to story telling.

I've played it up until the end of the first Venom mission, the only thing I saw available was a race? Do I have to do race challenges to progress the story or do I unlock more open world activities as the story progresses?
