Great discussion ladies~ I'm at around the 7:20 mark! I think this part is totally true - the social pressures are HUGE. I think us humans put ourselves on some sort of moral pedestal and we like to think we will always choose to do the right thing but we, more often than not, see humans always doing the wrong thing in many social situations. So in my mind, it's either - they went plant-based for their health/weight loss so they quickly quit OR they were actually vegan for ethical reasons but due to social pressures and the world being so unvegan, they go back.

"Knowing why." Great point, gotta have a reason, beyond a fashion trend or a diet trend. And there are sooo many good reasons! A friend of mine says, "Oh, you're so disciplined!" Maybe a tiny bit, at the start, but really it's nothing to do with discipline ... it's just that I don't WANT to eat animals. That simple, ain't never gonna change.

I don't have any vegan friends, even my husband is a dedicated meat eater. The community that was a food desert for vegans up until the past few years. I never considered giving up. My mom was not supportive, and always complained at holiday time. I just didn't eat with the family in Thanksgiving or Christmas. My sister lives where there are many more vegan options, but she only lasted for 2 weeks. It depends on your convictions, compassion, and dedication. I've been vegan since 2010. But, like you ladies I'm not a mean judgy vegan. Also, if people would just start eating less animal products, they're moving in the right direction. I eased into it. I think it can be overwhelming to suddenly make the switch. You all look so healthy. You have gorgeous, glowing skin, and good hair. I got sick a couple of years ago, my nephrologist told me the vegan diet is the healthiest diet for the kidneys. And my kidneys recovered quickly, and he believed it was because of my vegan diet. He said meat and dairy are bad for the kidneys.

I liked that you ladies spend a good time on social pressure because for a lot of people, myself included, that is a real thing! I made the transition in 2019 to buy only vegan products at home and order vegan meals when I'm out if possible, but that's not always the case. I feel the best I have being plant-based and maybe someday I'll get fully vegan. This transition has worked for me and has reduced the amount of animal products I consume.
@Oathkeeper1992
@Oathkeeper1992 2 жыл бұрын
I initially went vegan as a New Years resolution to be healthier and lose weight, ended up falling off about a month or so later. The first attempt was cold turkey and didn’t stick because I hadn’t solidified my why and given myself a transition period. About two months later I was fully vegan after watching Cowspiracy and allowing myself a longer transition period. Now I’ve been vegan for 5+ years and I have not intentions or desires to ever consume animal products. I’m still struggling with my health occasionally, but that’s separate from veganism. I’ve definitely had friends who have come to me asking for my praise for going vegan for a week or liking vegan food. Also had a friend watch an environmental documentary, freaked out, said she was going vegan, then proceeded to only eat rice and beans for 3 days. She then texted me and said she was hungry and it wasn’t sustainable so stopped. It does feel like a special cognitive dissonance goes on with those that have not “come to the light” as we could say. Whenever I have a brief thought of wavering I always go back to my why, and now amongst my multiple whys, animal welfare is always at the top, and is my constant reminder that I don’t need to consume other living beings to sustain my own life.

Omg why are you right about the outcast, bully thing 😂🤣
@chubbatheBOSS
@chubbatheBOSS 6 ай бұрын
I was strict vegan for 2 years. I wasn’t on social media or preaching, but I was very strict and perfectionist with myself. For spiritual and ethical reasons. I was an outcast and bullied growing up so it was isolating but I dealt with it. Feeling out of place at birthday parties. I didn’t have friends growing up so food had always served as my friend. To think that these “friends” were bad for me or actually made of violence was like a betrayal. At the same time that old toxic friend draws some people back again and again. You must have compassion and forgiveness for them because we are battling an addiction. How many times have people gone back to toxic relationships? Drugs? Any addiction? It often takes multiple tries to quit. You cannot shame them or judge them saying their “why” was not good enough. People who eat animal products are battling an addiction and are traumatized (yes the aggressor is also a victim to his own violence) and we will “fail” many times. We have to forgive ourselves and keep going instead of shaming each other. My “why” was strong at the time. And then later it wasn’t because when I felt emotionally low, I reached for what felt soothing and that was the old addiction. At some point I went on a spiritual retreat out of the country and they didn’t cater to my diet. I ate whatever they served. When I went home, I fell off and ate everything. That was two years ago. Now I feel drawn to plant based again and have been vegetarian for several weeks now and some days all plant based. I don’t want to judge myself. I know I have an addiction and will probably be dealing with this my whole life. I am taking those labels off myself. Whatever I end up eating, I am not going to be perfectionist and I am not using the label vegan or vegetarian for myself ever again.

As someone who has many times quit and returned to being vegetarian and vegan, it has always been ethical (at least that’s been one of the reasons) but it was family and friends pressuring me to stop, then anemia after having babies and still pressure to stop that made me quit. Going back to it again because I always come back around to not being able to get slaughterhouses out of my head. I first chose to go vegetarian against my family’s preferences at age 9 lol

Yea I think this definitely applies to people who were eating pretty restrictive vegan diets. I'll always find it interesting that most of them immediately went back to animal products instead of trying to tweak their current diet while staying vegan. Very black and white, all or nothing thinking on their parts and definitely made me question the ethics they claimed to have.

Facts! Although I'd always just say people are '100% plantbased' if they are "vegan" for any other reason than ethical. Since veganism is a philosophy and not a diet. Going vegan just means doing your best to not profit of exploitation and other cruelty.

Okay, I've been vegetarian and then vegan for awhile now- before it was really "a thing" like it is nowadays- it's mostly the conscious/clean-eating/plant-based thing that's cool. Veganism and even vegetarianism as it is- isn't cool. People still don't think it's cool to campaign for animals but chlorophyll water, spirulina popcorn, and chlorella lemonade are cool. Technically, I went vegan because I'm comfortable being in the counterculture- you have to be, because people really don't like us. Even vegans don't like other vegans nowadays, so veganism has always been a one-man-show kinda thing. YOU honestly have to believe in what you're doing- not looking to the left or right, on your own path. It's gotten better as veganism has grown and become more mainstream, but I'm not convinced that all the vegan products, or veganuary, meat-free-mondays are actually keeping people vegan, they're just dieting imo :/

The compassion fatigue thing is real. Sometimes I don’t even think about my reasons for being vegan and I just do it out of habit because the why is hard to think about all the time. For example I don’t think I could ever make myself watch Earthlings again but it is part of my why. Whenever I start feeling disconnected from my why I revisit it, but I try not to live in it all the time because it can be draining.

I consider myself vegan (or plant based I guess), and will always be. But here and there out of convenience and not wanting to be a pain I’ll eat dairy/ eggs. Typically when I’m at events where they likely didn’t make vegan food or I’m staying with people who already made food for me not knowing I’m vegan or what vegan means (tons of people assume vegetarian or don’t realize butter is an animal product). I think whatever people need to do to keep themselves life long plant based is more important than making sure they never consume a single animal product again. I like to think of it with my dollar, I shop plant based to only contribute to that market. But sometimes with free food I can be more lenient. I’m 5 years plant based and over 8 years vegetarian! Thanks for discussing this!!

I often think channels like this cant ever speak on these grey areas because if im to assume(if im wrong im more than welcomed being proved wrong and corrected) that even if they grow up not knowing any vegans or not in a vegan family they have/had supportive family, enough money that when they found out about the vegan lifestyle they could just switch,and access to decent vegan options(aka could order vegan food online or get takeout if the local options are lacking they are from California or at least live their now/for a while California has a lot of vegan options which maybe something they never had to not think about for.... like if someone has family who picks a non-vegan restaurant for their birthday and costs are already covered and this person is low income they just cant go buy often times a vegan meal to replace it food especially now is pricey and you dont wanna invade on someone elses day and make it about you when it could just be easier that time to get a vegetarian meal and keep it pushing... people are not going to starve when they have limited options at the end of the day it comes down to making being vegan more accessible in every way shape or form thats really wow most people struggle with staying vegan if you could walk into every mcdonalds and they had vegan pancakes/hashbrowns or a vegan big mac and so on those things matter and add up especially for people who live in food deserts and making it the same price as the nonvegan item
@tspicks4360

You're correct, that's "plant based", not vegan. A vegan approach would be, "Dang, they don't have any food here without animal products in it, shame they went to all this trouble making it. Guess I'm not eating right now. Is there a salad somewhere to tide me over 'til I can get some real food?" :)
@radiocorrective

I deeply understand this perspective but I gotta say its definitely enabling the nonvegans around you. If you don't voice the valid discomfort associated with unnecessary violence or disturb the negative peace by at least not participating in it then its definitely sending a message of "everything is fine and dandy with this situation". Its making people even more blind to the prominent sinisterness. If no one breaks the illusion by refusing conformity then it'll stay this way forever. Don't choose the minor discomfort of misinformed people over the major horrible impacts it has on exploited individuals, please.

I personally decided to start eating fish and eggs after 4 years of being strictly vegan my inflammation caused by my scoliosis, eye sight and anxiety had significantly worsened.. along with my hair shedding way more than normal + skin clearly beginning to age prematurely. Now I eat sardines, salmon and organic free range eggs.. along with taking capsules of glands like Testicle, Thymus and Adrenal + Liver, Heart, Bone Marrow, Trachea cartilage and Tallow fat (all from Ancestral Supplements which is a brand that sources from New Zealand which has very high standards for how they treat their cattle.) I do highly recommend drinking celery juice daily on an empty stomach along with eating all of these nutrient dense foods if you're wanting to potentially improve the things I mentioned because it has worked for me. Avoiding animal products however did not.

Glad you are feeling better! I think it’s important to note that many underlying health issues are not caused solely by food, there is usually some other type of issue or deficiency at play here. It is SO important to make sure you are eating enough and getting a variety of nutrients in, no matter your diet. Just as a vegan diet is not always a “cure all” for any ailment, it is also not always the “sole cause” of an ailment either. Millions of people thrive without the addition of sardines, salmon and eggs, and many cultures overseas have thrived off a primarily vegan diet for years.
@BlueBackflip

Good for you, you finally realized like I did that there are certain micronutrients you simply cannot get from plants alone. I wish it wasn't the case for me, but it is.. my eyesight worsened too along with crazy digestive issues and leaky gut from plant toxins like oxalates in my smoothies from all the spinach and almond milk and nut butters. Horrible depression, anxiety, chronic pain and fatigue. There are so many anti-nutrients and toxins in some plants and seeds like chia we can't even digest them so we don't absorb the nutrients. This is why vegans are always hungry no matter how much they eat and food is on their mind all day long, because their bodies are signaling them to eat some fat soluble vitamins and minerals from animal products.

I would love to hear you talk about the disordered eating thoughts and behaviors that can come from a vegan/plant based diet. I believe that aspect + social isolation go hand in hand and they feed off each other (no pun intended 🤪) it’s one of the main reasons I chose to stop being vegan. That along with hormonal imbalances and PCOS. There comes a point in many vegan’s lives where they have to choose between the mental and physical health of themselves and the health and well being of animals. It’s natural and understandable why humans would choose themselves. It’s our evolutionary/survival instinct. Same goes with social inclusion. Those are some of our biggest needs as humans. Anyway those could be some really great video topics for the future. Would love to hear more of the grey area because I don’t think this issue is black and white✌🏼

@UChzP5oQ8KDSSf9Ya6IsFEgw right, but I think specifically for a plant based diet it gets tricky because morality is placed on food on a bigger scale. I know a lot of vegans don’t view animals as food if you’ve been doing it for years, but some still do. Especially when we’re living in a non vegan world and everyone around us views it as food and eats it. So when we place morality on certain foods like eggs, meat and dairy, we think we’re bad or crazy for craving them. Just like any other diet that demonizes sugar, gluten, or carbs. Some foods are viewed as good and acceptable and others are viewed as bad and evil. I personally think it’s more magnified with a pb diet. With the eggs, meat and dairy (food we’ve been eating our whole lives) it’s natural and normal we would crave them from time to time. Even if not for the nutritional value, but for the nostalgia. Whether vegans want to admit it or not, a plant based diet contributes to toxic diet culture. Food cannot be viewed as neutral for them. Which should be the goal of anyone trying to heal their relationship with food. On top of that the inconvenience of eating pb 100% of the time even in tricky situations is difficult and annoying. Being the only vegan in your circle of friends and family is mentally and emotionally taxing. Feeling responsible for bringing food everywhere bc you know there won’t be vegan options (I once had to bring my own food to a wedding and it was so obnoxious ☠️). Not being able to walk into restaurant and having the ease of ordering whatever you want off the menu. It’s a lot. And it wears on you over time. And at the end of the day what no one is talking about is the fact that most humans will choose themselves over an animal. Vegans aren’t ok with that. I think that’s the thing beneath the surface that no one mentions. Most people in our world will never view animals as equal to humans, so they will always prioritize their own mental and physical health over animals they don’t know.

@@MoreSaltPlease Your posts here reek of defensiveness and a huge amount of projection. Don't condescend to think you can speak for any vegans but yourself. No offense but I think you should check yourself. Veganism is NOT a diet, and you thinking that illustrates that you were just plant based. Veganism is an ethical stance. Your food issues are unfortunate but they're your own and you can't use them to slander an ethical movement just because you weren't able to sustain that lifestyle.

@@MoreSaltPlease Hello! I saw your other comment i will comment on that one soonish. But, yes i think uncomfortable grey areas and questions make some folks mad because people just wanna be able to give a easy answer to something that is way more complex than they want it to be. Like iv seen a few comments for a while now saying a lot of how they heard professional saying sometimes the vegan diet messes folks up(when they ask them) because dna wise their culture/ancestors now have their body wired for certain foods that they hunted and were local to the area so they quit these foods cold turkey(and have no vegan replacements/access for their cultural foods they grow up eating and their body rejects because lets say they were use to eating a very fish/seafood heavy diet the omega 3s/6s im sure homemade tofu is amazing but they dont have those vitamins and minerals infused in it I dont think a great deal of ex vegans would go back to salmon if they had the vegan version with the same vitamins accessible....

Being vegan is highly logical, even Spock (a vegan!) would tell you so. :) Also demonstrably healthy, my own health, for example, improved dramatically after undertaking a vegan diet, eating whole plant foods (going on 10 yrs now). Veganism is very pro-human, pro-animal, and pro-Earth. Win, win, win.

@@tspicks4360 Illogical because eating meat and fish is the natural human diet and satisfies all nutritional requirements. Mono crop agriculture (for human consumption) is an environmental disaster on an epic scale - all to grow mountains of fibrous garbage for which there is no nutritional need (for humans). Illogical.

@@waddaplayer4030 The natural human diet, historically, looking at the fossil record, was basically whatever people could get in their surroundings. Which meant sometimes animals they could catch or scavenge (ugh :), and sometimes meant just plant foods - there have been archaeological findings indicating no consumption of animals (going by dental fossils, poop fossils, and such, in at least one location (and very little in some others). If you're figuring meat and fish supply all your nutritional needs, good luck with that. Mono crop agriculture grows a higher percentage of corn and soy for animal consumption than for human consumption. Animals who people then eat - highly inefficient, far more calories consumed by those animals than what people then get from eating them. Of course, all this is when there are people in the world going unfed, and so "Highly illogical, Captain.":) And that is in fact the only way to generate enough animal flesh for what people consume - there's literally not enough land on the planet to get there with "grass fed", "free range" animal agriculture. So if it's thought that mono crop agriculture is destructive on an epic scale (for which a case could perhaps be made), it's highly illogical to eat animals. More efficient to just eat those plants instead. As for plant fiber, it's been well documented that people's guts are considerably healthier and more frequently free from cancer when consuming significant quantities of plant fiber. We don't much break down cellulose ourselves, but the bacteria in our guts thrive on it - keeping them happy keeps yer colon happy. Don't worry, be happy!
