Why Vettel's Aston Martin F1 debut was so bad

Sebastian Vettel's first F1 weekend as an Aston Martin driver couldn't have gone much worse. He was eliminated in Q1, had a silly incident in the race, and picked up penalties for infringements on Saturday and Sunday. To make matters worse, he's struggling to get up to speed with the team's AMR21, which has taken a step back from its race-winning predecessor over. the winter. There's plenty of time to recover, but Vettel would have been hoping to start from a slightly higher base

At least he didn't spin - he'll be saving that for round 2 and 3. I like Vettel...but this has been embarrassing for a while now. Sainz jumped straight into that Ferrari and was fine. Stroll vastly outperformed Vettel in round 1. Those with championships ahead of them are on the ball immediately. Vettel's are behind him now, coming up on 10 years. Who knows, when he retires, his hair might start growing back.

I think for SV it is the sum of all the parts. The hangover from Ferrari, the lack of testing mileage, unable to do a decent qualifying stint, the penalties and the finally the error. Now that is quite a bit of weight on any sportsperson's shoulders. And it will take an exceptional effort to firewall onself from all this. Aston will improve and perhaps that will also help SV. The key here is how is Aston Team and SV going to come around to address these issues. That will an additional spark for already what is looking like a great season ahead.

I think people are disrespecting one of the most successful drivers of all times. He was never that good to start with. His four world championships came from a car that was able to qualify on pole most of the time. He was also favoured by the team and had a compliant team mate in Webber. If Vettel got a good start, he just drove off into the sunset. If he didn't get a good start he thrashed around, running into his team mate, breaking team orders etc. Vettel got a non-compliant team mate when Ricciardo arrived and couldn't cope. He ran off to Ferrari and hasn't done much since (apart from a few unforced spins). This latest string of excuses (the car doesn't suit him) is typical, and what we've been hearing ever since the V6 era started. I really think Vettel is the most undeserving world champion in modern times.

@@paulfisher4765 wow, do you have this much hate for Lewis as well then? Seeing as he is pretty much all you have described just he hasn’t left Mercedes yet? He has a complacent teammate in valterri bottas, he is almost always on pole, he is always in the best car (apart from maybe this year), and at the start of every race he just gets the lead and runs away, then during the very, very, odd occasion that he falls back closer to the midfield, he usually doesn’t recover and tends to make more mistakes. It seems that every good driver who is blessed with the best car is not deserving because they are in the best car... would you rather seb had won in for example a lotus? Who weren’t the best car on the grid? F1 is about engineering as well as racing, all of the drivers are very close in skill and who wins is really just decided by who has the best car. Also as a side note, when Rosberg was his teammate they had a very very toxic relationship in the 2015 and 2016 seasons because Rosberg could actually beat him, and that hurt his ego and made him uneasy.

@Balaerus

Mazespin's pirouette was out of his control, but getting penalized for it wasn't. Drivers always pull the same shit keeping their foot in under yellow flags. (Max in mexico 2019, Hamilton in Austria 2020 for example). Fact is he might have seen Mazespin crash into turn one right infront of him, but that doesn't mean he has the right to keep his foot in if the whole sector is yellow. Perhaps someone else had a moment too which he hasn't seen. Considering drivers are on the absolute limit of their abilities in qualifying yellow should always mean that your lap has to be aborted. Also Seb fucked up his lap under yellow flags by himself too. His sector 1 wasn't even down on time, he totally screwed up his own sector 2.

I think it's a simple answer, I'll drop a TLDR in the bottom. 1. New aero regs specifically targeted at Mercedes, which had a low-rake philosophy, and AMR (RP) copied the low-rake design. 2. Vettel had by far the least amount of mileage on track in testing- switching teams does not help at all. 2b) The race was at the same circuit that testing was at - teams have more data, AMR had very little running on his side. 3. Practice time cut short because of odd errors (Aero bits flying off) 4. Unable to do a proper run in Qualifying - was improving in the second and third sector despite the yellows 5. Untimely penalty and starting at the back 6. Damage to the front wing in the first few laps (watch the onboard) 7. Car was around 5-6th fastest the whole weekend. 8. Poor strategy with the tyres 9. An inexcusable error. I am not defending him on that one, if you know downforce drops when you're that close, go alongside, not behind. TLDR: This was a very unlucky past few weeks for AMR and Vettel specifically. He needs time in the car, above all else. He was moving along decently until the strategy went south. That was generally the only positive thing that happened. He isn't in his prime anymore, but to completely write him off is a mistake.

I‘m afraid the problem really is Vettel... I had hoped so much that he would do good, but I can‘t lie to myself anymore. I understand the Ocon incident, though: Ocon had the indide line and should‘ve turned left about 5 meters earlier. When Vettel says „why did he change line“, he‘s right, because Ocon changed line from taking the curve narrowly to taking it widely by turning in about 5meters later than anyone would

I hate when I see comments like WASHED UP, SPENT etc. Vettel is a veteran driver. However, he’s not a risk taker like he used to be. Unlike a lot of younger drivers who don’t have children and family life. Vettel is thinking twice consciously or unconsciously due to his responsibilities. You see this in a lot of older drivers. Less risks. Listen to his radio call when Grosjean crashed in Bahrain - first thing he thought about was Grosjeans family.

you forget that Vettel also got to P5 from the back of the grid, the difference is that Seb had to stay out long after his tyres were competitive because someone who's job should be at risk decided he should do a one-stop. If he would have had a normal pit strategy he'd definitely be in the points. Just look at Lance Stroll, who, despite starting 10 places ahead, was behind Vettel by the time everyone but Seb started to pit, yet still managed to finish only 3 places below where he was at that point.

Tell that to Sainz, Alonso, Perez, Ricciardo or Tsunoda. Vettel and Mazepin where the only rookie or transition drivers to perform badly in the first race. Sure 3 days of testing is nothing compared with other years but is still enough time to get adapted into the game like the drivers i mentioned before proved it. Vettel might be suffering more because he was the driver with the fewest amount of laps completed in testing but still, once again hes proving that he is terrible adapting to a car that doesnt follow strictly his needs.
