That is what Western media does! If one fine day US decides to mudsling Vietnam, they will start with that Communist Vietnam again just like what they did during the Vietnam war!

That what U.S. and the West European Imperialist do and still practicing in most Asian Nation particularly those nations of the Oriental. They will never ever let any Asian Nation rise and "Communism' is use as a tool to divide these Orientals in order to control and rules them thru' their influence. United States had almost destroy Vietnam and will the Vietnamese forget and forgive ? Only those Greedy Oriental like the Japanese and South Korean who sold and pawn their own soul to the American and worse the Korean is still killing their brothers ,sisters , fathers and mothers.

China's communism is more about socialist capitalism, a far more humanistic model and ideology than the unfettered capitalism in the west which enslaved the people in the west.

USA has been and is trying to steer the world towards democracy. What better way than converting? If USA wanted to force countries under its rule, it would have done it at the end of World War 2, and no country would have resisted; even now, if USA want to use force, no other countries can resist it.

Vietnam fought brutal Vietnam war with America. Then Vietnam fought another war with China. Historically this is the history of Vietnam. They always choose to be independent. Vietnam will take advantage of the rivalry between the US and China. They will never take any side even if this causes economic loss for Vietnam.

This is an interesting episode providing so much insights about China and Vietnam relationships and to a great extent how distorted and ignorant Western media reporting on Asia and Africa. WSJ as cited in the podcast is a good example - ever since they were sold to Rudolph of Australia, they have become a biased media with agenda and ill intentions. Thank you for your good work!

In the Vietnam war, the Vietnamese ally of the US lost everything. The problem may be corruption. Today, Vietnam is still corrupt. In that since it doesn’t matter too much which side it is on, as it is a liability. The other issue is, Vietnam is next to China. It does not want to go against China regardless of friendly it can be towards

I'm not exactly sure if Vietnamese are still trying to fight their water economic zone against China in the south sea or they are trying to have a good relationship with China even though their rights of the the south sea are also very important for their economy Why is that? We all know that the Philippines is still fighting for their water rights until at present and not giving up for sure...

May be the Vietnamese understand the bigger picture. They understand that China national security matters more than sovereignty dispute. China militarization of SCS is the reaction to the 350 US military bases in Japan, Korea, Philippines and Australia. If the US can sacrifice 10,000 islanders of BIKINI Islands for the only sake of nuclear experiment on humans, then why can't China disregard Pinoy objection rgd SCS for the sake of China national security. How many Pinoys were killed by PLA. Not as much as 10,000 as in BIKINI island

If we look at just post 1945 you miss a lot of the experience. The country started breaking from China, fighting and invading China , ally with other countries to invade China. Trying to learn about Vietnamese from the context of the colonized by Chinese, French, American is very short and narrow scope. Today is no different than the days before the French arrival. Vietnam trying to make it.

Is Vietnam trying to invade China? Do you have a nervous problem? A country that is too small compared to China (population is 1/14, area is 1/30 of China) is trying to recover after decades of war, just wanting peace to rebuild the country, instead of invading a giant country right next to it? The leaders of Vietnam are not crazy to do that. China has wanted to split Vietnam in half like the Korean Peninsula in 1954, then tried every way to prevent Vietnam from unifying in the 1970s, and China itself provided all the resources for Pol Pot to attack Vietnam in 1978 and sent 600,000 troops to attack the Vietnamese border in 1979. With all that, what do you want Vietnam to think about China?

@@brucelu4782 No, it's all just a pretext for China's expansionist and hegemonic intentions. With actions such as: scheming to divide our country, like the Korean Peninsula through the Geneva Accords, trying every way to prevent our unity (failed because we united in 1975), then nurturing, equipping Pol Pot to instigate attacks on us at the southern border, mobilizing 600,000 troops to invade our northern border to defeat our country but all failed (you know English, you can find the truth about these two wars on the internet). The Chinese government may deceive the Chinese people, but how can they deceive the world? They know it all. It's ridiculous when you try to defend those actions. Today, we have put the past behind us (but we will never forget) to focus on peace, stability, and development for the two countries.
