I dont think her mother rejected her because shes a killer. Her mother and her are "the same" because they are both manipulative psychopaths. But where Villanelle is intrigued by people she cant manipulate, her mother is repulsed. Villanelles mother controls both the family and also I think the community (the brother talks about how respected she is at one point). Villanelle is the one person she cant manipulate because she is her equal, they are the same. I dont think her mother likes this which is normal in a sycopath because they have a need to control everything. So the mother got rid of Villanelle soon after she realised she couldnt manipulate her sending her to the orphanege. And then sending her away again when she returned.

I agree on the whole "mommy issues" thing, and indeed i would hazard a guess: her mommy issues is reflected in her tend to love people who give her attention. I mean, she fell in love with Anna because at the time she was the only one who didn't take a step back, she actually showed her "extra love" as she said. V never loves first, she just loves the ones who already (somehow) love her. And honestly I think that V was at first amazed by the similarity between Eve and Anna when she first sees Eve in that bathroom, and that only at a second time she kinda fell in love with her: when Eve got out of her car choosing to trust V and to not be scared. In these women she finds the love she never had from her mother. Not saying Eve is a mother figure, just saying that the lack of love in her childhood effects her way of relating with others. Btw I'm not English so sorry for any mistakes

I actually feel that Villanelle had started that wheel in the bathroom. She initiated the whole thing back there. If only she paid no attention to the mirror reflection who knows how the plot could go. At least she definitely wouldn't kill anyone beside the exact target. But she got over emotional. As we know she feels things mostly when she’s with Eve. We can assume she couldn’t handle those sudden emotions & got totally mad. I think that if she paid to attention to the mirror, firstly, it could take much more time for Eve to find V, and, secondly, V definitely won’t be triggered by Eve that much.

A few notes. It was Villanelle's manipulation of Eve into killing that earned the rejection in the 1st place. She learned the hard way what loves not. Possession with the demand of unconditional surrender. She wanted her mother, Tatiana to admit to her own psychopathy. What happened to her father is a mystery. In her narcissism, Tatiana viewed her own daughter as competition. Even from the 1st season Eve knew on some level Villanelle wanted out of that life and that normalcy was what she coveted. And still viewed her as someone to be saved. Then on Tower Bridge, Villanelle demonstrated her understanding of love at it's most selfless by giving Eve the choice to walk away and Eve still chose her. It also showed how much Villanelle/Oksana has grown up.
@screentime45004 жыл бұрын
I agree, Villanelle had a lot of growing up to do between S1 and S3. But I think Eve would have rejected Villanelle at the end of S2 even if she hadn't manipulated her into killing Raymond. Eve was still chasing after Niko in Poland in S3. I would be interested to know what happened to Villanelle's father-is it possible that he also rejected Villanelle, hence why Villanelle looks to Constantin as a father-figure?
@Senate3004 жыл бұрын
@@screentime4500 Abandonment, murder or suicide is the question where her fathers concerned. Oksana worshipped the ground he walked on. Eve was too invested in Villanelle to dump her until she saw the gun which rendered the investment as worthless. Eve was chasing the last link to her facade of normalcy with Dasha sending her Texts from Niko's phone before the Pitchfork stabbing. Eve was also chasing after Villanelle like a mad woman with nothing to lose. After killing Tatiana, Villanelle died to make way for Oksana's emotional rebirth.

@@screentime4500 I also believe Eve to be the modern day Madame De Tourvel to Villanelle's female equivalent of Vicomte De Valmont of Dangerous Liaisons(the basis of Cruel Intentions). Only Eve's made of sterner stuff in the hard to get stakes and is the greatest challenge for Villanelle who's bored of the lovers(of both genders) she's so easily seduced in the past. In her quest to conquer Eve it's Villanelle who ends being conquered in more ways than she bargained for.
@NICOLETANYINGLI4 жыл бұрын
I love how you caught Villanelle's reaction when Eve says "I know". I now see that it is reaction of relief from Eve's acceptance, like how she had been rejected at every end and then to be accepted. I'd like to imagine that Villanelle had been alone for so long as an assassin. Not only was MI6 unable to identify her kills, no one was able to catch her. So we see in series 1 when Eve manages not only to identify her kills but was also able to have such a chanced encounter with her, it showed that finally someone was able to seek her out through her work unlike anyone has ever been. Villanelle is also incredibly proud of her assassinations/work, so for someone to be obsessed and "a fan" of her work stroked her ego.Therefore, she is both intrigued and elated that someone was up to her level. Finally she was seen. Because of that she reciprocates and sought Eve out as well. When she said her name was "Eve Polastri" during the fetish kill, she signals to Eve, "game on." This starts the chain of cat and mice, where Villanelle attempts to test and manipulate Eve only to be bested and for Eve to consistently overcome expectations. Hence, Villanelle sees Eve as an equal and "the same".
@screentime45004 жыл бұрын
Yes, you hit the nail on the head! Villanelle really just wanted to be noticed by someone and obsessed over. I considered having a section of this video talking about V and E's shared loneliness: E doesn't have anyone but Niko and V doesn't have anyone but Constantin. E even says "I basically married my dad" to Carolyn😂
@MrAdryan16034 жыл бұрын
Villanelle absolutely does not see Eve as any kind of equal to herself whatsoever, nor any other human being, because that isn't possible. People with this condition are self-obsessed egomaniacs and see everyone else as inferior, or at the very worst end of the spectrum they have no regard for life at all. She heavily implies on more than one occasion and finally even states to Eve that she is nothing without her and that literally the only thing that makes Eve interesting is Villanelle. Not trying to be rude, but V could (and did) think she killed Eve and just simply move on to the next thing in life and the next person without looking back and it showed us that if Eve had actually died V wouldn't have really cared past that interest that was barely there in the first place, she only had that reaction and got back into her life after Konstantin told her she was alive and he saw her. Otherwise, maybe she would have thought about her every once in a while but she practically forgot already. The idea of someone she is *physically* attracted to (I believe she is incapable of empathy or actual love, or they went the complete psycho direction with her character and then they decided to backtrack across the paint anyway and give a psychopath sudden, miraculous new feelings they make it pretty clear she's never truly felt before. These things are not possible with this level of psychopathy, just fleeting fascination or interest, and if they were staying true to the character they built up she wouldn't be able to truly love anyone. Seems like it's merely Eve's kind of twisted love towards and fascination with her that fuels any interest V has with her... And let's not forget that Eve is on the sociopathy spectrum as well, they have clearly shown that throughout all three seasons.

Yeah, more like she is looking for someone to fill the hole left by her mother who didn't love her. I think that's how she became an assassin too. I think Dasha pretended to care for her at a young age because she knew that was what Villanelle craved and then used that to manipulate her into becoming a violent sociopath. I think the darkness in Eve is important too though, because to Villanelle it means that she is capable of accepting her darkness too. But after the third season I don't think V wants that acceptance from her mother anymore thus she's no longer looking at Eve as an extension of her maternal figure. She's beyond that and in that dance scene she's just seeking acceptance from the woman she realizes she loves just for who she is. It's the same with Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling who end up together in the books. At first Hannibal tries to manipulate Clarice to become a replacement of his sister, Mischa, but he soon stops doing that and starts seeing and loving Clarice as an equal partner. The same with V and Eve. Villanelle is no longer seeing Eve as an extension of her mother and is no longer trying to manipulate or force her darkness out. Instead she's letting Eve do and be whoever she wants (bridge scene) because she no longer feels the need to make her fit that maternal pattern after killing her mother and understanding she doesn't want her acceptance anymore. She loves Eve for being Eve and that's freeing.
@Senate3004 жыл бұрын
With Hannibal & Clarice it cut both ways because while Hannibal initially viewed her as a replacement for his long lost sister, she saw him as a twisted, father figure she fell in love with. In Eve, Villanelle had the friend, the mother and star-crossed lover who takes a genuine interest in her as a human being rather than just a gifted killer with no soul. In turn Hannibal & Villanelle saw their perspective lovers as humans in their own right instead of objects to be possessed.

That's true-V's mom did ask her to leave before Villanelle said she was a killer-but I think V's mom knew about Villanelle's history of killing before V came to visit. I think V's mom being the killer during the game at the dinner table, combined with V saying "you're like me" and then immediately after saying "I've killed a lot of people" are huge hints towards V's mom being a killer too. Hopefully in S4 they will dive more deeply into V's past so we can see what happened!

If someone found you endlessly fascinating, the way Eve thinks of Villanelle, your interest would definitely be piqued. Lol. Eve also sees Villanelle with a certain lack of judgment, something which Villanelle might be craving. Eve knows her truth but understands, that can be very liberating, Villanelle doesn't have to lie, pretend or hide anything. The worst of the worst is already known to Eve. There's any number of reasons Villanelle would find being around Eve intoxicating. But it's mainly because she's the centre of the relationship. As she herself told Eve - 'Don't talk to me like that. Don't forget, the only thing that's interesting about you, is me.'
@zieteniere75004 жыл бұрын
Villanelle says she wants a normal life plenty of times. She wants stability. She wants someone who will accept her for what she is and gets her (someone to watch movies with, a normal life). If you want to play that back - her dad seemed to love her, and he died. Why no mention of that, and such fixation on the mom? What the mom represents in lacking, results in something everyone everyone wants - understanding and acceptance. These are basically uninteresting, baseline expectations in a relationship. So I dont get the level of fixation on that here, and no mention of dads role if you're going to fixate on parental relationships. I also feel you ignored her general upbringing in favor of fixating on the relationship w the mom. Unfortunate because that also plays into the lack of Villanelle feeling known and stable in who is there for her (Eve provides both and it is Eves job to know V). The thing that is unique about v and eve is that acceptance is about murder. That is where the sparkles in their relationship come from - Eve knows what Villanelle does and still treats her like a person and better. It's not a mom gap she's trying to fill. It'd a stability and acceptance gap for who she is now. But especially now, and that goes beyonddd what any mom would accept, and where it moves into the mom portion falling apart (most mom's would not approve their child being a murderer correct me if I'm wrong). She grew up adopted, groomed to be an assassin, and didn't get a stable, normal life. My stomach didn't like this video. Made me very uncomfortable and hope that no straights see this.

Villanelle meant that her mother was just as twisted as her because Villanelle is her daughter, hence "I am my mothers daughter". I believe Villanelle has "Mommy issues" to an extent, but i think she just had that spark with Eve and that spark told her that this is the person that would really love her. Villanelle has never truly ever felt loved by any one, everyone she's ever cared for or has shared a moment of her life has betrayed her. 1. Her mother abandoned her (There's a subtle subtext that i picked up re-watching the show in which i believe Villanelle's mother had told the orphanage to tell young Villanelle that they had died in the car crash and she then told their family that Villanelle had died in the fire so she didn't have to bring her back). 2. Dasha was the one who made her in to a killer, she was rough on her and somewhere in season 3 it is mentioned that Dasha tried to kill Villanelle. Which explains Villanelle's Hostility towards Dasha when she see's her at her wedding. 3.Anna wouldn't choose Villanelle over her husband and out of jealousy Villanelle killed him. 4. Konstantin set her up to obtain the whereabouts of his family.

For me, I’m not convinced Villanelle can love as true psychopaths are incapable of love and empathy. When V says “I love you” at the end of S2, E points out that she doesn’t know what that is and V confirms it by equating it to possessiveness (“you’re mine”). This is why the end of S3 confuses me because V seems to feel and show selfless love - so are the writers saying that V is no longer a psychopath? Psychopathy is not really curable from what I understand (though I am no expert).

Thanks for putting together the video. I wish you had dug a little deeper into the bus kiss and how that also illustrated Eve removing yet another barrier between them and a concluding summation would have tied up things in a nice little bow, but that aside, you did a fine job of explaining Villanelle's motivations.

OMG I loved when Eve did that it was quite clever. I'm pretty sure Eve was trying to lower Villanelles guard so she could escape and it worked perfectly.

Because of Villanelle's mummy issues, she always has an attraction to women who resemble her mother. But going off of her relationships with Anna and Eve, they both have another thing in common: they accepted her the way she was. Because Villanelle's own mother could not accept her for who she was, she has a particular connection to those who do, which is why her relationships with Anna and Eve went on for longer than any others. Villanelle wants people to choose her, because she is abandoned all the time. She made Anna choose between her and her husband; Anna chose her husband. She made Eve choose between her and her life; Eve chose life as she knew it. There is always an ultimatum with Villanelle. So, Villanelle still has this tether to her mother, until she visits her in Russia. On that trip, Villanelle is freed from the hold her mother had on her, and finally releases the emotional guilt she always carried. That is why after her trip, she changed. She herself became more accepting. She no longer pushed Eve to choose her. Instead, she gave Eve the freedom and space to choose what she wanted. She gave her the option to leave and never look back; it was all in Eve's hands. Because Eve didn't just symbolise the lost connection with her mother anymore; it was no longer infatuation. Eve was the woman Villanelle loved. And Eve chose her, when no one else has ever chose her. This symbolises the changes in both characters in comparison to the earlier seasons - they both had to accept the parts of themselves they weren't willing to accept in order to be free.

Wow this was such a good analysis and makes their relationship make so much more sense to me than it did before. It's not just a simple spy vs spy or cat and mouse situation, it's so much deeper than that. While Eve is a bit of a hybristophiliac- besides Villanelle Eve makes multiple comments and insinuations to being further than just fascinated by crime and actually attracted to the criminals that commit them, only trying to act the opposite when she begins to feel she's gotten herself too deep into the situation. Villanelle on the other hand is so enamored with Eve, as she has a shitload of deeply engraved issues that stem from her mother as you laid out in this video. Once again, great analysis and greatly put together.

thing about Villanelle is that she's not psychopathic. The show got that totally wrong. Psychopaths are incapable of feeling emotion, and her emotional and impulsive reaction to her mother's spurning demonstrates that she reacts emotionally to external stimuli. The fact that she reacts with emotion, accompanied by an extreme act of violence demonstrates that she's not actually a psychopath because doing something like that would not benifit her in anyway, therefore it could be considered an emotional reaction due to its irrationality. She also experiences regret, which is counter to psychopaths, who are unapologetic in their behavior and have lack of remorse. The show got this part about Villanelle wrong. Should have said she's a sociopath (they can feel selective emotions, and are "made, not born" which is what the show seems to imply happened to her) and not a psychopath.

I LOVE THIS, it's amazing your analysis, but I would like if you can analyze the whole season 3 based on the villaneve relationship, because it shows that villanelle is really in love with eve not just an obsession or something like that, even she let her go just for love, the opposite she did in season 2. It would be amazing if you make a point of view "what makes a Psychopath to fall in love", like a more deeply analysis focus on season 3, anyway, I hope you understand me lol You're amazing, love your work, love this video 💜

No hate to you or your video, but overall people need to stop calling Villanelle a psychopath without knowing what an actual psychopath is. She isn't a psychopath. Low functioning sociopath maybe. If that. But definitely not a psychopath. Two very different things. I know the show itself threw the "psychopath" word around a lot to try to describe Villanelle because at first glance, that's what it looks like. But as the show progresses and you get to understand ViIlanelle as a character more, her story, and yes. her emotions. You realize she's much more complex than that. For starters, one of the biggest differences between sociopathy and psychopathy is the fact that psychopaths are simply born like that. They don't need trauma to make them that. Sociopaths on the other hand are created by their environment. But even then. People who have ADP have a very low level of emotions. Psychopaths don’t have any kind of emotional responses to thing or empathy for that matter. They simply mirror people and their emotions. But can't feel any of their own. Whenever they do show emotions it’s simply to mimic or manipulate. But as the story progresses, you see Villanelle having genuine emotional responses to many things. Like in Amsterdam when she’s watching through the window, waiting for Eve to show up to the crime scene just to see Eves partner instead. She was clearly heartbroken by that. So much so that she goes out to a club, takes a bunch of pills and almost kills a girl. Then the next day she’s visibly falling apart while staring at herself in the mirror. When she sees that Eve is her next target. She grieves and asks a hotel employee to comfort her. If she was a psychopath she would just mercilessly do the job and move on. On episode 5 of season 3 when she goes home to finally deal with her trauma she faces it head on. Specifically her relationship with her mother. She’s clearly in search for closure or peace of mind. But because she doesn’t find it she handles it the only way she knows how by setting the house on fire with her own mother inside. She does in fact spare her brothers lives though because she does care about them. But that train ride home? You can visibly see her trying to hold back tears and her overall emotions. You can see how much pain she’s in. She tries to suppress it because that's all she knows. If she was truly a psychopath she would have been fine. Her moms murder would have been like any other kill. But the next day. She’s crying besides the bathtub looking at the ceiling helplessly trying to understand her own emotions. Next episode. More tears. She cries quite a lot from half of season 2 on for someone without emotions. Let’s not forget how Villanelle has a tendency to act like an innocent child on many occasions because of the fact that she was denied a normal childhood with an overall very rough upbringing. Dasha trained Villanelle from a young age and basically constructed the “perfect killing machine.” Which suggests that she only kills people because she doesn’t know a different reality. Because it’s her job or to get people out of her way. Or even when people are between her and Eve. But overall, throughout the show, especially near the end you see so much personal growth and change in Villanelle as a character. Psychopath can’t change or be cured. Villanelle on the other hand doesn’t want to kill anymore because she just doesn’t see a point and wants to leave that part of her life behind to start over. Whatever that may mean for her. Which we will see more of in season 4. So yeah, taking all that into account, you can understand my problem when people try to suggest that she is a psychopath when she in fact is not.

Vs mother was a psychopath who resented V for taking even a small part of her husbands affection and loving V.( so she got rid of her) V saw how her mother was destroying her brother and step brother and hurting them, so saved them! E is a strong intelligent and unpredictable so is intriguing! We also see her admiration for Carolyn in the final episode, another strong intelligent woman, who can be unpredictable! We also see the lack of respect for her mentor K as he is shown to be weak in her eyes!
