Great video! Hah - these virtual try-ons are the "next worst things." I do not like most of them and I am not giving any of them permission to access my camera. I try to use the ones that present models that may be similar shade - but sometimes the model may be your shade but not your undertone.

I actually just used the virtual try on feature for glasses and it was much better than any attempt I've tried for make up. I'll reserve my full review until I actually receive the pair I ordered! still - racism in tech is so real! I never thought about it until someone pointed out the sensors on automatic sinks and dryers. I almost always experience issues with them.

Very good that you are doing this, and your not the only one who thinks about these things, but the only one who speaks up because of your channel. We all know about HOURGLASS the brand that does not include other skintones than white people. I do my best to speak out on YOU TUBE about the problem of inclusivity [ hope this is the right word ]. We have come a long way, but we also still have a long way to go. We have to keep talking about this, and do something about it, I mean not buy or use . And I almost never buy on a brand sight.

In my case, it would be easier for me to purchase from a brand retailer. However, when you look at the European e-commerce market for makeup or beauty products in general, the accessibility is very different from the US. For example in my country we don't have Sephora, Ulta etc., we could purchase from Sephora US/FR but the shipping cost are really high, so the next best thing would be to purchase from the brand website BUT in some most cases, they don't even give you the option. So from there we make it work for example I would purchase from Cult Beauty or Beauty Bay if the difference in price is not too high (now with the Brexit it's another story). I can't purchase from Colorpop without having high shipping costs AND dutie fees. The Ordinary ships here so that's an easy one. L'Oréal and Maybelline are available in store but not the whole range. Game of chess really.

Just wanted to add that I RARELY purchase from a brand's website - I do like the Fenty website and have purchased from them directly during their sale and it was a very positive experience. One of my items broke enroute and they replaced it - no questions asked. Mac is another brand I purchase directly because of the fact that there are many Mac stores so I can return items in store.. I prefer to purchase from Sephora our Ulta rather than from the brands.

Hi. Love your braids! I am guessing because facial recognition technology not being able to discern dark-skinned people very well may be related to why this technology doesn't work either. The programmers/creators have more work to do. Need more people of color to help or better yet come out with their own version. Mac wasn't too bad with the eyeshadow. MAC powderkiss eyeshadow have been on my loves list for a bit. Will purchase soon. As other commenters stated, I prefer to buy MAC at MAC (although Macy's and Ulta sells some items and convenient also). For the sake of not having all my information and reward programs all over the place, I tried to buy from retailers like Sephora and Ulta that have brick and mortar for quicker returns, if needed. Otherwise, I use Paypal at the brand's website. Thanks for the sharing!

You said everything I’ve ever felt about these virtual try-ons lol. I’ve tried them but they always gave me My Scene Barbie games from back in the day so I never took them seriously lol. They’re getting better, well some. But overall, it’s not effective. From the smoothing and skin lightening filters to the colors not translating well...it’s largely a mess. I’ve never used it for a foundation shade match but I’m going to try it. I usually use it for eyeshadow, blush and lipstick and you are right sometimes it’s accurate and sometimes it isn’t 🤷🏽‍♀️. I don’t usually use the brands page unless they are having a sale. Because we get rewards for purchasing from Ulta and Sephora.

I do prefer to buy directly from the brand’s website, especially if it is Black owned. I like to make sure these Co.’s get to keep all of their $$$. Great video!

I do not use the virtual try ons for the reason you said -- it's not "made" for darker skinned people. The filters that they use to apply the makeup are meant to create a sheen that can only be properly observed if your skin provides enough high contrast for it to show up (aka, you've got to be light/pale). It's why many colors distort or just didn't show up when you tried them on -- the contrast isn't there because it's pigment (product) on top of more pigment (skin). It's just kinda a waste of time. I'm just doing things the old fashioned way we did it before Sephora and whatnot -- eyeball it online, pick it up in the store, and return it later if I was wrong 🤷‍♀️🤣 Ig: xxria94

And that's why I don't rely on virtual try on because most of the time they are off and inaccurate. Which is so sad because most companies still don't consider us deeper skinned people. I purchase from the actual companies when I purchase foundation because of more shades and better deals often times. I do also purchase from Ulta and Sephora.

I did a virtual try-on on the MAC website for eyelashes it worked because that the only thing that they can't mess up 🤣 but for the other products like foundation, blush, or even eyeshadow I feel like they always look ashy on me in the try-on.

This is such an important topic and I love the series format with the coffee too. I really really wanted to try the virtual try on tech but these apps and websites crash on my phone all the time. I do not know why. A thing to think about separately from the software is that camers tend to generally wash ppl out, I do not look in real life anything like the camera portrays me to be. If the software does not take that into account then you cannot buy products using that software. Ulta and Sephora sounds awesome for those who are in the US, france and Germany. In other countries these 2 stores either do not exist or offer a much more limited stock of items. There are awesome websites like beautybay and beautylish which helps to stock up on all our makeup wants in one sitting. However the brand's actual website has a far better range of all their goods so international customers looking for specific stuff prefer the brand website. This will be a thing even after the pandemic is over as outside the Asian, UK, German/French, nordic countries and US bubble the make up industry is eons behind offering miserable shade ranges and overpriced boring products. The true international makeup enthusiast who wants good products cannot try them at the make up counter and is forced to get them online. For us this try on software is super important to help us decide to order before we commit ordering with international shipment and customs duty to pay. Brands and makeup websites need to stop being lazy and really invest into this software instead of complaining that revenue is falling due to the pandemic. Incomes are falling and we got nowhere to go to doll ourselves up for but being at home all the time means we have more time to practice makeup tricks at home as a hobby. So the makeup industry needs to get it together, make an effort and take advantage of the opportunities available.

Yeahh I used the Nars virtual try on to see how the air lip mattes would look. Needless to say its for the white giirls only. I just went to ulta, bought the ones I was interested in and returned the ones that don't work

I tried the virtual once on Armani's site and I looked ashy lol. do you have 80WY swatch for the Stay Naked foundation? I definitely go to the brand's sites , more often than not they have way better discounts than Sephora and Ulta. Many also do free returns so why not? :)

I’ve definitely used virtual try ons before pre covid. It’s completely pointless. I’d much rather user youtubers such as you that have similar shades as me to get my right match. @b.blesss

I’ve tried a lot of virtual try ons becusse of COVID. E.l.f, Nars, Urban decay, etc and they’ve mostly been for complexion. I’ve just been too scared to buy anything based on it because like you showed in the video, almost nothing looked liked it matched me and ya girl is not trying to waste her money so 🥲. (IG: miyeamanda) Plus: I loved your hair while you were doing the virtual try ons! 😍, and it also sheds light on how deeper skin tones are left out in tech on a broader scale, like you briefly said. It’s kind of sad that even with as far as we come, we are still an afterthought

This was a great video. I also don't like the shade finder quizzes on sites. Never works for me, that's why I don't try virtual try ons. I have more success getting my shade from KZbinrs. I usually purchase at a beauty retailer except for Black owned brands like Fenty and Juvia's Place. @mmaolisa
