This reminds me of the story about a rooster who was put to death in medieval Switzerland for “supposedly” laying an egg. People once believed that a rooster laying an egg meant that it made a deal with Satan and the egg would hatch into some fictional creature that looked like a dragon crossed with a rooster. So to give some more context to this strange trial, ancient Greeks used to believe Murder would leave a miasma in the air that could only be cleaned via trial and sentencing and not just for animals but inanimate objects too. Accident or not this miasma had to be dealt with lest it attract more tragedies, this idea lived on through the church who believed animals had a set nature and when something like this happened it went against their very nature and only the devil would cause this so to drive off the devil the offending animal had to be punished in Ecclesiastical court. These trials would persist even after the church came to the conclusion these things were just tragic accidents and not evil afoot. Historia Civilis goes into way more detail.

Great video. However one correction, I've seen a wild pig nearly takedown an adult human male. They're fast, smart and mean. The pig in question was easily 150-200lbs. Had there not been other, armed people around, the gentleman in question would have been pig food, as the first bite to the leg was incapacitating.

EXACTLY. I knew that was a screw up. My uncle knew a guy who's pigs had tried to kill him 3 TIMES. They'd push him over and try to eat him. These are FARM pigs too. I nearly had my hand broken by one during feeding. They are QUITE dangerous, particularly the domesticated black breeds because they have more wild boar in them.

Pig on Trial? Come on... :-) We, in Russia, had a bell on Trial (at the end of the 16th century). I'm talking about the famous Uglich bell, which announced (legends say that it happened miraculously by itself without a bell ringer) about the murder of young tsarevich Dmitry (last son of Ivan the Terrible, his only living heir at that time and the last representative of the Rurik dynasty) by conspirators, after which they were also killed by angry townspeople. After that, the instigators of his murderer (Boris Godunov and his entourage) ordered to publicly judge the bell, cut off its "tongue" (the internal clapper), punish it with lashes, and then exiled it to Siberia. After these events, a Time of Troubles began in Russia with all these crop failures, hunger riots, civil war, three False Dmitry and foreign intervention. In the 19th century, the bell was officially amnestied and returned from exile to Uglich.

Only one? Those are rookie numbers! The city of Wittlich celebrates a Säubrennerkirmes (Pig burning / roasting fair) every year since 1950. It goes back to a medival tale where one night the city gate was locked with a turnip because the wooden plank went missing.
