One of my older favorites, Courage ha some hilarious fearful moments but in the end he always face his fears to save the one he loves
@LighthawkTenchi Жыл бұрын
I never got freaked out by Courage(then again, I was in high school/ college when it came out), and Fred seemed more funny than anything else. Yes, he’s shaving people and animals against their will, and got locked up for it, but he’s generally a polite and humorous person, even caring in a way. For example, gently pulling Courage from the toilet, saying he shouldn’t play in it. The funniest part for me was his refusal to shave Courage’s tail, saying that would be weird. I’m baffled by why he drew the line there, but it made it even funnier

Honestly, I was holding off recommending these videos until the Halloween season of October (for obvious reasons) as an extra bonus video for the month. Especially because I figured people would fill the comments with more Dark Toons and little to no Nostalgia Critic videos. Till then, may I suggest checking out a more calming NC review. Try his video on Bridge to Terabithia; nothing scarring in that film what-so-ever.

My little brother loved watching Courage, personally I preferred comedic insanity like what various Abridged series do now. I get Doug effectively saying scares made him feel tougher. If you can watch something nightmare inducing and walk away with some semblance of sanity, then life can ride shotgun; probably holding a shotgun. Late 90s and early 2000 cartoons really could come from a dark sense of humor. Doug might be older than us but there is still the same twisted sense of humor we can laugh at, it's just a different generation not knowing as much about the previous.

You should give Dick Tracy a view. A live action movie based on a comic book detective from the 1920's starring Warren Beatty and Madonna. It was made in the late 80's or early 90's and has alot of practical effects that still make it an interesting watch. The lighting he was talking about used bright colors and deep shadows to make scenes look like they were straight out of classic comic books from the golden age.

With regards to Sweeney Todd ("The Demon Barber of Fleet Street"), I don't want to spoil too much about what the plot is, go into _exact_ details, but Sweeney, or at least the version of him in Sondheim's musical, is a wrongfully accused man who's out for revenge against the corrupt judge who had him sent to the penal colony of Australia (the story is set around 1795-1825, so this was before Australia was a colonized place; being sent there was equivalent to a death sentence with extra steps), just so he could be alone with his (Sweeney Todd's) wife, who he (the Judge) raped at a party. When Sweeney hears that his wife is supposedly dead (and that his baby daughter is now the ward of the Judge, who seeks to marry her when she comes of age, as is the case of any groomer, and make history repeat itself by taking _her_ virginity) he snaps and comes to an epiphany that humanity is a wretched, disgusting, evil thing, that "[We] all deserve to die," and that it would be better for the few good people if these evil people were put out of everyone's collective misery, leading to him not merely plotting to kill the judge, but to kill anybody who sets foot in his shop "Plying his trade on less honorable throats," whereupon their bodies are grinded up and served in meat pies by Miss Lovett, the woman who lives in the pie shop beneath his barbershop (who doesn't mind his murderous habits, because London at this time is hit with a meat shortage and her business is suddenly picking up for the first time in years, because people suddenly like the flavor of her new pies). The music is great, top-tier, and for best results I'd watch either the Len Cariou or George Hearn performances (in both instances, Angela Lansbury played Miss Lovett, and she was remarkable). The Dreamworks/ Warner Bros version made by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp in the lead role of Sweeney Todd is also good, though somewhat jarring for those used to the Cariou/ Hearn portrayals of Sweeny, as in the original performances, Sweeney was a baritone voice, while Depp has a much higher pitch, which forces him to sing slightly faster to compensate for the change in pitch.

A common trope for serial killers/psychos is that they start with small animals, typically a pet or neighborhood stray, before moving on to larger animals and eventually people. I'd definitely recommend checking out his other Dark Toons. Courage's Head of Beef and Betty Boop's Snow White are good ones. Even check out some of his editorials as well.

I think the reason why Freaky Fred scared kids is because he talks and acts like the "Stranger" that parents warn kids not to trust. Seeing that creepy smile, hearing him talk about doing "naughty" things, watching him violate Courage with those razors... Everything is just OFF enough to feel like he's a threat. In the meantime, I do like the "vlog" style of videos that Doug sometimes does on the channel, where he's not reviewing or playing the "Nostalgia Critic" character and he's just talking about Movies and tropes, like "Top 10 Worst Cliches" or "Top 10 Films I like, but Everyone Else hates"

You actually saw Courage the cowardly dog? I'm surprised and happy about that. The show was one of my favorite things to watch in my 20's. It wasn't entirely for kids as this episode is evidence to. Freaky... freaky fred. For some odd reason my favorite episode of courage was the duck brothers. I watched it at like 2 am in the quiet of the night, and most of the episode was them talking with a star filled night sky in the background. It was just all too surreal, and stuck with me the most.

While the Freaky Fred episode is a bit creepy, I wouldn't say it was the scariest episode of Courage. I think the episode with the Great Fuscilie (spelling) is probably way more scary. Especially because it doesn't really end with a happy ending. SPOILER: It basically ends with Eustace and Muriel both being turned into life-sized puppets with Courage controlling them to carry on as normal a life as possible.
