Mamedyarov is a world class GM. He has played several games against Carlsen over the years. In the initial years, he had a very tough time against the World Champion, losing most of his games. However, recently he has started to strike back and he has beaten Carlsen several times. When they clashed against each other in the 10th round of the World Blitz Championships 2022, Mamedyarov equalized right out of the opening and then was even pressing. Check out the game to find out how it ended.

It feels wrong to be chuckling at the temporary shortsightedness of a GM when I seriously suck at chess. I guess that’s what makes Blitz fun for us noobs; we get to see the greats forced into mistakes even we can understand (upon review). Classical, not so much.

Even the greatest players in the world see maybe 3 moves ahead for any given lines, in this time format they can get a basic idea who is in a better position on the board but that's about it. He didn't realize he was going to be stuck in a perpetual until the move it happened. Having said that Mamedyarov was at a positional disadvantage for almost the entire game.

@lethallohn
@lethallohn Жыл бұрын
He didn't forfeit. They agreed to a draw. Mamedyarov was in a better positon and up one pawn. (Draw according to engines). However, once Mamedyarov took that last pawn (up two pawns), Magnus had perpetual checks to the king. Basically, Mamedyarov got upset because he couldn't push for a win anymore (He blundered a guaranteed draw).

@@MrDkgio They are playing with blitz rules NOT traditional tournament rules. Perpetual checks with no repeated positions will allow the game to continue for too long (without invoking the 50-move rule) - this is why after 3 consecutive checks the opponent can claim the win in blitz tournament. Check out the 2022 FIDE arbiter manual yourself under FIDE Rapid and Blitz Rules and Regulations [B02] (Chapter 6) for this rule.
