Few know Oliver’s whole story . I have studied him over the last few years being of special interest to me . Oliver was married to a Whitmer which made his situation difficult after many of the family left, along with financial disagreements with Joseph .There is no valid proof of dissent over polygamy , it was financial in nature . Oliver remained true to his testimony and was rebaptized by my husbands grgrgrandfather Orson Hyde . Brigham welcomed Oliver back and was helping to arrange his return to the Saints in Utah when Oliver tragically died before the trek . Oliver returned to the Church a much repentant man desiring only to be in “the company of the Saints again “ . He requested No special position but to testify of the truth ...his words . Everyone is subject to attacks by Satan and those early Saints were no exception.

Oliver's leaving the church after so many divine manifestations shows that seeing deity or angels is not enough. We need to be changed by the Atonement of Christ through our faith, repentance, ordinances, and continued coming unto Christ. We cannot let pride grow within due to our position or prominence!

AS it says in Matthew, "...a wicked and adulterous generation...requires a sign." Seeing is NOT believing, but believing IS seeing. Faith precedes the miracle.

The fact that him and the other special witnesses of the Book of Mormon fell away- and all maintained and affirmed the truthfulness of their witness only strengthens their witness in my mind. They all had reason and every opportunity to expose the hoax, if it was one 2 eventually returned to the faith. Despite their difficulties, I honor these three men for the important role in the restoration and their faithfulness to the truth.

@@StompMom5 Yeah I know. I feel sorry for these folks that can't just simply not believe and go on with their life, they have so much anger they can't leave it alone. It's sad. I believe this is one of the main reasons they were chosen to be witnesses. The Lord knew this would happen. It makes their testimonies even more valid.

A few months before his death in Richmond, Missouri, Oliver told his old friend Jacob Gates: “I want you to remember what I say to you, I am a dying man, and what would it profit one to tell you a lie? I know … that this Book of Mormon was translated by the gift and power of God. My eyes saw, my ears heard, and my understanding was touched, and I know that whereof I testified is true. It was no dream, no vain imagination of the mind-it was real.”

Thank you for this presentation, this is good to know. Oftentimes we hear alot about the mistakes of the early saints, more than we do about the good. Despite the choices he made, and his exit from the church, I am sure deep down he missed his times with Joseph Smith and the Lord. I am glad Oliver Crowdery made his way back in the end ♥️.

He came back, though, that's the most important part of his story imo, that often gets forgotten or glossed over. It demonstrates God's mercy and love, and lightens my heart to know that Oliver Cowdry was able to humble himself and come back to be rebaptized, and this amazing and powerful saint will be able to partake in the glorious bounties of eternity. :) I sincerely thank God and our Savior for the Atonement which provides me the opportunity to repent.

Can you tell the people here about Cowdery's corresponding letter about the abolition of slavery? Excerpt: "The idea of transportation is folly, the project of emansipation [sic] is destructive to our government, and the notion of amalgamation is devilish! . . . And insensible to feeling must be the heart, and low indeed must be the mind, that would consent for a moment, to see his fair daughter, his sister, or perhaps, his bosom companion, in the embrace of a NEGRO!"

I sometimes wonder whether things of this nature occur to show and teach people things about Earth life and Eternity. No one is exempt from being tempted to do what is not right, even Christ Himself was tempted, but of course, being Our Father is His Father, he had the power to resist, plus the personality he always had to do right.
