When he says "somebody has to kill the babysitter" he means television. That was the messege you mentioned after. He had no dad and his mom neglected him and she sat him in front of the tv growing up 24/7, (the babysitter). His goal was a noble one. He wanted peole to have to reconnect instead of distancing themselves with technology.

Isn't it rude to show up to friends on a surprise visit? Don't you need to let them know you're coming over first? They could be in the shower. On a date. Sometimes somewhere else.
@0001captainawesome
@0001captainawesome Жыл бұрын
It's not rude; unless you know there are solid extenuating circumstances which means you should stay away. I'm pretty well traveled, for reference I am 30, no 31 lol, and have friends of all ages. The vast majority of the time people just show up and hang with me and/ or the family, or vice-versa. (I'm talking about friends, family, respectable people, or sometimes just moderate acquaintances; both "high-born" and "low-born', you name it.) It's the most normal thing from the entirety of my experiences on the central East coast and realms beyond. It's just always been that way. I wouldn't feel weird about it. Maybe it's a difference in area? Though like I said I'm well traveled in the U.S.. Age doesn't make a difference from the knowledge of my travels, well, not as much as people would think anyway. Being a people person always helps of course, and I was born lucky in that regard. I'm just trying to think of reasons because I feel oppositely from you for the most part. If they are not there then they won't answer the door and you leave. If they are in the shower like you said then they probably won't hear the knock even so then you leave. If you think you need to notify first then yeah you either should, or your just nervous or shy. I can't tell you which, each situation will be different. I mean deep down you'll know so it's up to you, but in general I don't think it's weird.

It's darker, it's deeper, most people were going into it expecting another performance like The Mask, Ace Ventura,Dumb and dumber. It's not the same KIND of film but was probably just marketed as "another funny Jim carry movie" which was where the failing was. The film itself is great.

At the end, Carry is saying his mother was never there, there are lots of cable boys and girls that still have a chance, we just have to kill the baby sitter. I'm fairly certain he is talking about TV/media. People just sat their kids in front of a screen and it warps them. Him falling into the satellite and not letting people see the results of the trail reinforce this idea. All in all when I first saw this as a kid I didn't like it because it wasn't funny like dumb and dumber or Ace Ventura, but around 16/17 I saw it again and thought it was a funny dark comedy that I just didn't get at a child. Now at 31 I see the social commentary in the film and enjoy it even more than when I was a teenager.

@@soulance8342 The original ending for that film is screwed up because Jim and Kate's characters decide to retry their relationship and then they both get their memories modified over and over until they're both like 60 or 70 years old. I prefer the ending where it's ambiguous as to whether or not they go through the same bad breakup or accept one anothers flaws and stay together. The bit about Silence of the Lambs was adlib. Matthew Broderick's reaction was completely organic. The bit about killing the babysitter was reference to the flashback that his mom used the TV to keep him occupied while she ran out to the bar. The guy that picked up the book, if you didn't recognize him, was Kevin Graves, Jack Black's band mate from Tenacious D. It is hard to find a Jack Black film that he ISN'T in. The nightmare scene has so many subtle touches to make it feel creepy. Props to Stiller's direction there. Ignoring what you said at the beginning, I highly recommend Carrey's more serious roles, including "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (is that the one with girl from Titanic you mentioned?), "The Truman Show" (not totally serious, but with serious commentary on the institutions that control our lives), and "The Number 23" (although I would say THAT is his worst film... I don’t care what anyone has to say about Jim Carey and his movies/acting nor what he’s like outside of acting, his comedy has helped me laugh after some of the most difficult times that life threw at me. I will forever love his movies, skits, inspirational speeches, quirks and artwork. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I saw a comment that said something like, parents would rather sit their kids in front of the TV than actually make the effort to raise them (the kids are the little cable boys and cable girls). That's why he said "someone has to kill the babysitter", because the TV is the babysitter.

When I was a kid, for a few years my mom worked at a movie theater. When this movie came out I loved it, and the other movie playing at the time, so I would go back and forth. But, I had figured out what time in the other movie to leave the other theater to go watch him sing "Somebody To Love"

As a dark comedy, this early Apatow movie was way ahead of it's time. Really sharp satire too. People don't seem to realize just how much Chips life was determined by television, these scenes are loaded with smart references the whole running time. There's almost no dialog without a deeper meaning to it, it's everywhere. I keep noticing how it still goes over so many people's heads, they just don't seem to notice. And for Carrey? He's just genius in this, what a hunting and extremely funny performance. No one else would have been able to pull this of like that. Always loved and still love The Cable Guy! ❤

I think at the time of release this movie was just WILDLY different from what people were expecting in a "Jim Carrey" movie. People wanted another "Mask" or "Ace Ventura" kinda thing, but got a pretty dark thriller with the comedy being VERY subtle, which wasn't known for being Carrey's thing. I won't claim the movie is a masterpiece or even one of Carrey's best, but it was definitely over-hated and still is a classic worthy of a watch to any Carrey fan.

Cable Guy was one of Carrey's first film roles to break away from the goofy Ace Ventura and The Mask typecasting he'd gotten himself into, and people who saw Carrey and Matthew Broderick in the same film went in expecting a more traditional comedy, since their most famous roles at the time were in comedies. It was surprisingly dark material for both of them, and it would take Yes Man and The Truman Show for Carrey to really flex his dramatic chops and show he could be more than just the zany comedy guy.

A very underrated gem. Glad somebody gets it. I remember buying it on VHS and having people look at my collection and ask WHY? Cable Guy was off-kilter and dark and possibly marketed wrong sure... but I thought it was a great character study. It has potential for more as a concept but yeah... This was unreal when I found out Ben Stiller directed it and one of my favorite things he's done, Jim Carreys done, I mean... yeah. It's so random and creepy and funny. (And yeah Broderick was so-so but I guess given the role, anybody could have played it given the show Carrey gave)

This is one of my favorite Jim Carrey performances. He plays the creepy desperate for a friend stalker. And the movie has pretty good undertones on TV raising kids during that Era. Thats why he said "Somebody has to kill the babysitter" that's why he jumps onto the satellite trying to knock out the television.
