I worked at Digitech/Harman SP for about 8 years. The team responsible for the Hardwire Series set out to build the absolute best pedals. They delivered big time, but then the company decided to move in another direction. As I recall, these weren't originally supposed to have the Digitech name attached, just "Hardwire". IMO, this series never got the attention it deserves and they all sound amazing. I still have mine and I will never sell them. Of course, Harman later sold everything to Samsung and that is that.

Great vid Mason! Awesome sounding pedal. I've been using the TC Hall of Fame 2. I mainly use the Church setting and also made some custom settings for the User banks. One thing that I use a lot on it is the 'Mash' footswitch which works as an expression. I program it to increase the reverb level and also the decay. Great way to add in the middle of a solo or when doing swells. And it hardly takes up any room on my board. Probably better sounding reverbs out there but that mash option is very useful. I do think I need something with the Lexicon chip! Thanks!

Spot on, Mason! :)) Great video, as always! I was extremely lucky to have recently bumped into an absolutely mint, like-new RV-7, and oh man I am loving it!!! If I wanna get fiddly and really play with knobs and expression pedals and what not - I have my Neunaber V2 with the EXP controller, and a Cooper FX Expression Genenerator to get crazy with shimmers, swelly wet reverbs and modulated delays. But when I need something "classy" - I step on this chunky square foot switch, and... the magic begins :) I agree on the hall setting: this is what I use most of the time on my RV-7, and it sounds darn good.

I've had an RV-7 for a LONG time. Still sounds as good as new. I think it, and the Polara are sneaky good. You forget, put them up. Then get them back out one day and you go "whoa, these ARE good!" Reverb is my nemesis. I've chased it all over, never satisfied - thank you Chris Isaak. I must have surf, so I must have "drip" - the True Spring, Topanga, and Surf Rider do it for me. Shermy (Surfrajettes) gets fantastic tone out of an offset, a Surf Rider and an Excelsior. The Flint is great because it's Reverb Plus. Love my RV-500 too. I have a Blue Sky but it is a butter knife of reverbs to me - very competent but not exciting. I think the RV-7 and Polara are its equal. The True Spring also has a good tremolo and I have an older Immerse. So, no one pedal is enough. Gotta have one for surf/drip and another for basics and ambient/wash. I liked the Cropper tone best. Its my favorite pedal still and gives me such an amazing clean reverb with some amazing affects as well if i mess around with it.

I remember I bought the DigiTech Supernatural when videos of it were put out on Pro Guitar Shop. I was immediately sold on the plate and shimmer settings. Still my favorite reverb pedal I own. It even survived being submerged from flooding. Took off the back cover, sat it in some rice, and it worked like nothing happened to it. Still swear there might be a piece of rice still stuck in there because I can hear something lightly moving around in there any time I pick it up.

This reverb is the tail end of regular reverbs, before the modulated stuff became popular. Compare this to other straight up reverbs, like the Boss reverb,, MXR or even other Digitech pedals, and it's clearly above those. This is because the Hardwire series was a more expensive pedal, with rugged features geared to stage use. The Lexicon chip is just one of those differences. Anybody who compared regular reverb pedals of the day would know just how much better this sounded than the others. It didn't cost as much as the Boss back then, either, so I was surprised. It's a very good reverb.

I totally agree with the sentiment. I'm looking for my first reverb pedal and have experience mixing and recording in professional studios. The reverb pedals coming out at the moment sound beautiful but are totally gimmicky. As a trained engineer I just want my dry/wet, decay time, size and room type on a guitar pedal. Something I find incredible is that I haven't been able to find a single pedal that let's you change the early reflections, diffusion or pre delay. Yet, there are dozens upon dozens of pedals with these ridiculous settings that no professional ever actually uses. Why? Those parameters are just as important as the others and aren't hard tk understand. Guitar pedal manufacturers seem intent on selling over the top products which inflates the prices and just creates a load of confusion for consumers.

Just a bit of curiosity. How would the Doctor's Special Rx compare to the TR Traditional Clean or the Amplified Nation Wonderland Special? I am considering an amplifier in that range.
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 2 жыл бұрын
They're all based on Dumble amplifiers with our respective flavors. I don't know the particulars on each of their amps, but ours is based on a 50W version of a Steel String Singer with some changes to exaggerate how I like clean amps voiced for pedals to run in front of. I suspect component wise we're probably all within the same range of high quality parts, transformers, speakers, cabinets, etc. All of our amps are made one at a time (by one guy) up in Toronto, Canada. We only make 4 amps per quarter and have only committed to putting out 12 total amps this year, and then we'll re-evaluate after that if we want to do it or not. This was just a passion project of mine to build the ultimate clean amp and something that I would be inspired to play everyday with all my favorite attributes. It's certainly not a high profit endeavor, despite the price point, I think by the time it's all said and done we're making maybe $400-500 an amp in NET profit before any marketing expenses are considered. It's a terrible margin, but I was willing to eat some profits to see if the concept was even workable long term. In any case, back to your questions, I suppose at a certain level, when you get up into the higher end boutique Dumble amps, you're sorta picking your favorite chef to cook your Ribeye...we're all cooking Ribeyes at the end of the day, but the way we flavor and season them, and how we cook them as "chefs" (or amp builders) might be a bit different brand to brand. Some amplifier builders aren't players...so knowing where the maker is coming from as a starting point to understand how they hear things can be a challenge with that in mind. Not to say they can't make great amps, but it's a consideration to weigh as your choose the amp you might want. I tend to gravitate more toward Pop music with some leanings toward SRV and John Mayer, but ultimately, I was playing in Top 40 bands so I liked clean amps that could work well with a lot of pedals and sound right for the era whether it be 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, or now. I also make pedals and have been on a commercial level for over a decade as well as being a rig builder, so that also gives me a good idea on what the amp needs to be to work with most pedals, not just the ones I like as a player. Again, all considerations for you to think about before diving in on an expensive amp :)

I got one of these after hearing many people say good things about it and the whole Lexicon thing, and your recommendations Mason. Man, it's a fantastic sounding reverb in 2024. I have the Strymon Flint as well, and the RV-7 kills it IMO for realistic sounding reverbs. The RV-7 Reverbs sound more like actual spaces to me, rather than the Strymon verbs which sound more like an effect rather than an actual space. The pedal seems to blend really well with my playing too and doesn't get in the way of the attack. I've never had a reverb pedal that performed quite like it. Glad I bought it because it's staying for sure!

I traded my Boss GE-7 for this pedal about 6 months ago. I came out on top on that one! Buuuut... This reverb left me feeling very underwhelmed. It does NOT go into huge or ambient territory. I don't play ambient, but it feels great to have that option. This pedal is just useable, sublte reverb. Although, I found the reverse and gated settings utterly useless, the modulation reverb is very subtle, the hall reverb doesn't even go huge... I sold the pedal fast and bought the MXR M300 Reverb. Now, THAT reverb pedal is something else! It goes subtle, and it goes huge! The modulated reverbs in that pedal (Pad and Epic settings) sound amazing, and any setting can really go huge!

As the video states, for core reverb sounds, this is unbeatable. It very closely resembles the gold standard rack reverbs of the 80's which is the high water mark for guitar with reverb (outside of a spring reverb tank). If you want really exaggerated reverbs, as the video says, this isn't for you and you'll want a super modern reverb pedal to do that.

Digitech Hardwire line was great. I have the DL-8 delay, the SP-7 Stereo Phaser and the TR-7 Tremolo/Rotary. Also, I have the Digitech Polara which is similar to the RV-7. Im glad I found this comment. I shoulda known it was one of the first comments. I remember seeing the 'Video premiere notification' for this video for this verb. I picked one up straight away before this video dropped, because I’m currently on the hunt for a Reverb for an evh pedal conjunction thing. I just had tried recently the UA golden… for its plate and …. Ehhhh…🤔🤷🏻‍♂️😒 I currently own the WET. And then receiving the hardware, comparing the two… ehhhh 🤷🏻‍♂️ again, for me, the WET holds the title. Although looking at a video for the Ventris, after reading this comment originally, I have to say, the plate on the Vent- sounds really goood! I’m going to try that one next. But for now out of a bunch of various verbs over time and even recently, the WET #☝🏻

I’ve had this pedal for around 10 years and when I first came across it, it was definitely the best on the market by far (hall of fame was all the rave). Not long after came the strymon reverbs, which have been hugely popular and obviously came a staple on most pedalboards. I never have the hardwire off when playing and still think it’s got one of the best sounding reverbs on the market. I like that I can leave it on all the time (regardless of genre) and never have to worry about it too often, I imagine that would not be the case with the strymon. I love the over the top strymon reverb sound as much as the next person, however, Ithink overly complicated pedals are not necessarily always great in a gigging situation where you need to change things on the fly in a moments notice. I don’t think the pedals perfect sonically and I have looked at others over time. Recently I was setting up a second pedalboard for smaller gigs and decided to use my boss RV5 that a friend gave me, I changed it out VERY quickly to the hardwire as sonically it didn’t compare. I think the design is good, I like any pedal that could get hit by a truck and survive. The only fault I would say is the battery option never worked. The reverse and mod reverbs are cool also (not covered here)

But I DO have the Hardwire DL-8 delay which I purchased new mostly for the tape echo and I think it sounds great. Had this pedal, and the Polara. They don't touch my PCM. Not by a long shot. IMO, they don't even get close to my LXP-1. Don't get me wrong, they're fine pedals and are fine for a "live rig". I think it would be more accurate to compare the RV-7 to the budget Lexicons ( the MX series) especially since Digitech and Lexicon were owned by Harmon at the time. It's good marketing to slap Lexicon your reverb pedal...don't blame them one bit. But I think it's a stretch to imply that it's a classic Lex in a stomp box. Enjoyed the vid though!
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 11 ай бұрын
So what’s a pedal that gets closer?
@funkyfoe12
@funkyfoe12 11 ай бұрын
Well, if you mean now, there’s a plethora of Reverb pedals that can get in the high end, “rack reverb”, ballpark; Eventide Space/H9, Strymon Big Sky, Source Audio Ventris, Chase Bliss CXM. I do realize that you made a distinction between a no frills, “bread and butter”, reverb pedal vs these MIDI-capable, parameter laden boxes I mentioned. But I think they must be included in the conversation, if you want to get near a high-end Lexicon. Back then, there weren’t nearly as many options for a studio-grade reverb in a box... if any. I had the Hardwire Reverb for many years, I think it’s a great pedal, but I really think it’s more comparable to an MX-100 than PCM 80, as far as sound quality. Also, I highly, highly doubt that there is a “Leixcon Chip” inside. Look... Digitech, at the time, slapped Lexicon on everything they could, from the GSP1101 to the budget RP355; pure marketing strategy. Again the RV-7 is a great, great pedal; It just ain’t no PCM 80, not by a mile. Just my opinion man. I enjoy your videos..thanks! @@VertexEffectsInc
