We get asked all the time, "When are you getting Gibson"? Baxter and Jonathan break down the current state of Gibson adding new dealers, their new focus outside of guitars and probably some rant about a movie.
Side Note: When I mention the submarine movie U571 I was talking about Das Boot...complete mental slip due to exhaustion there...unforgivable but nonetheless, my apologies for any confusion....Go watch Das Boot!
Let Gibson know you wan't Gibson guitars at Casino Guitars!

I bought two Melody Maker Vs one black, one white for my son and my daughter new and that's the last time I bought a new Gibson. I have never had such a hard time buying a new guitar! Guitar Center wanted $529 for one. Both the salesman and manager said they were made especially for GC only and if I wanted to buy from them that was the price. I told them they were on ebay for $399 and they said they did not honor ebays prices and refused to match their price. So I went to another Gibson dealer in the city I live in and he said that the Gibson rep did not tell him about these guitars (he was pissed) he said Gibson was sold out of the white so I bought a black one from him for $399, while it was on order, I got to thinking about the 300 GC stores and said to myself they have to have a white one in stock at another location. So when I went back to pick up the black one I went straight to GC and showed the manager the receipt from Sound Vibrations Corpus Christi Texas and told him if he did not get me a white one from another store I would go over his head and get one through GC for $399 and he said yes sir and two days later, without taking any money down they called saying my white Gibson Melody Maker V was there at the store and come pick it up for $399. You have to be an educated consumer to Deal with the Corpus Christi Texas Guitar Center. I would never want to be a Gibson dealer!

I was once the largest Gibson dealer north of San Francisco in California. This was under King Henry. Nothing but pain, suffering and abuse. He DID fix the Norlin problems but forgot that Gibson is a GUITAR company and never treated dealers below the Sweetwater/GC level well. Good luck with the new regime. I own nearly a dozen including the '55 ES-150 that Mom bought new so I am always rooting for them. Great conversation.

The big box guitar stores don’t have the attention to detail like you get in a private music store. If you pick one off the wall their action is way off and they’re not in tune. Unlike the small stores where they’re usually ready to go. When it comes down to it it’s all about money making.

Gibson's care less about players attitude & lets make $40,000 korina Explorer 1958 reissues (as in they could have probably produced 25 to 1 of standard models and got them into players hands). Overpriced standard guitars is a whole different topic but hey , they only want to sell showpieces to the rich not playable to musician's.

@@MrCrowley1018 - accurate. I think I have to hide them. I sort of enjoy listening to them blather, but they keep putting clickbait titles on their video, I click to learn something, and they don't talk about the title topic until most of the way through the video, at best, which fumes me. "Why We Can't Carry Gibsons" talks about skateboarding - including who they know that's good at that. If the episodes were numbered, like "the view from the guitar shop #113", I'd enjoy listening to them muse, every once in a while I'd learn something I wasn't expecting to learn, and we'd all be happier! 😁

Lmfao…. Haha. These guys are bullshitters. You wanna know why they don’t carry Gibson and want you to write Gibson asking why? Wanna know why so many “content providers/dealers make the same video titled something along the lines of “are Gibson’s really worth it” or “does Gibson care about the modern working guitarist?” Here’s your answer to why they don’t stock Gibson. They can’t afford it. 1. If you are an existing Gibson dealer you must commit to a $90,000 order immediately. (in addition to what you have in stock). 2. If you are not a current dealer but wish to become a Gibson dealer the opening order amount is $150,00.00. No ifs, ands, or buts. 3. 40% of all the guitar hooks in your store must contain a Gibson product. Period. 4. The $90,000 figure does NOT include OAI Division proiducts (Dobros, mandolins, and banjos). 5. The OAI Division opening order is an additonal $150,000. There will only be 12-18 OAI Division dealers nationwide. No ifs, ands, or buts.

I was at Gibson Garage last week, and it's very impressive...except in one area. No inventory to sell, except the display guitars! You see all the guitars moving overhead, and the wall displays. Should you want to buy a guitar, you have to order it and have it shipped to a local dealer, or your house. That's fine on a Gibson Custom Shop guitar, but rather odd on standard production models. Needless to say, I was disappointed. Is this what the future of guitar stores will be?

True statement..starting around 2005. They purposefully raised the buy-in cost to dealers, and then within one month..raised it again. It was a ridiculous amount of money. We were carrying both Gibson and Epiphone, and they basically put the squeeze on Mom and Pop stores. We were convinced that it was to intentionally change the marketing toward the Big Box stores. Though we COULD have made it work..We chose to walk. But, at that time..Gibson was being run by a jerk who knew nothing about the guitar business (IMO). But now, Gibson has got back on track..with great products again. They made some REALLY crappy stuff, back in the day when Norlin owned them. It ran a lot of customers away. But..when Guns & Roses hit the scene, Slash brought a lot of attention back to the product! Hoping Casino Guitars can get the line. It would be a great addition, to the already Awesomeness of the store!

@@wecanonlywish9194 on a fake Chibson, no less, he restricted the long dead Gibson name at that point. I remember my guitar teacher saying he wanted a Les Paul Studio, which was made originally for the metal market and then market finally and still to this day, as a no frills guitar. The problem was, imo, Gibson made EVERYTHING less well, for far longer than Fender did in the 60's/70's, which is why they got sidelined. See problem, repeat problem until company folds, more than once, than you aren't good at business. Base quality must be there, amd I'm consistently disappointed in one brand. That brand has always been Gibson, amd it has always been due to basic issues like fit, finish, and tuning is abysmal versus other stuff. Even when you do all the tricks, like tying strings off in ridiculous manners(see the reason a closed top tuner was made in the first place. STABILITY.) I’ve been fortunate to have owned several Gibsons that have come and gone throughout my playing time: LP Custom, LP DC Standard, Explorer, SG LP Custom, ES-345, LP Trad Pro. While they were great and served a purpose for their time, qc and more importantly tuning issues have always been the reason I’ve let them go. They do sound great which is why I’ve kept giving them chances, but I think I’m done. This year I attempted to buy an SG Special and the dealer cited a major QC issue during inspection that made me cancel my order. I opted for a Fender 72 telecaster thin skin from Wildwood instead. That guitar had zero qc issues, sounds amazing and even arrived in tune. Clearly there is a demand for Gibson, and I’m appreciative of guitar shops that care about qc and share that with customers before they buy. Wondering if that type of care and customer service plays a role in making it difficult for shops like Casino to carry Gibson...🤔

Love this channel and love your store-it was a pleasure meeting both of you a couple weeks back. I recently visited the Gibson garage in pursuit of a Les Paul Standard 60’s. Why? I grew up an early KISS fan and Ace Frehley played a tobacco burst Les Paul. When I got to the garage I was a little disappointed in the amount of flame on the 60’s model. I was presented with the option of a Murphy Lab, though they are beautiful I was not ready to lay down that kind of cash. The sales person brought me a Slash November Burst which by all accounts looks like a tobacco burst to me. I played it for a few minutes in the store, connected with the guitar right away. Brought it home and fell in love with the guitar. Now I am a Slash fan but I was not buying the guitar because I am a fan of Slash but more because of how it felt and sounded. I have not been disappointed at all. It looks and sounds beautiful. The Burst Buckers in the guitar have a very warm sound and from what I have learned mimic his Seymour Duncan’s that he used to play. I have Fender, PRS, Taylor, and a few Gibsons and I have to say I am very happy with their guitars. I bought a Les Paul Custom in 2013 and a 2019 ES 335 dot with P90’s…very happy with all of them…I may have been lucky but the quality seems spot on and the instruments are played often….Would love to see you guys carry Gibson.

I can say without a doubt their guitars are being made significantly better. Over the past few years I have owned 3 les pauls. A 2014, a 2019, and this year i got a 2021 standard. I no longer own the 2014 and 2019 lot's of issues with QC, and they never felt like quality guitars. The 2021 is one of the best guitars i've ever put my hands on regardless of brand. Everything on it is just perfect and it wants to sing, it is truly a great guitar worth the $2k price tag. I know there are probably some lemons out there. When I went to buy this guitar I tried around 25 les pauls. And the one I got had something different going for it. It's a 60's standard and the neck is ever so slightly thicker than the other 60's standards, not quite as chunky as the 50's standards but definitely has more girth than the other 60's standards I played. Maybe that's the magic in the guitar i got? i don't know but I don't think I'm ever letting this one go. This guitar is what imagine people say when they say there are some magical gibsons, because it truly is magical. The pickups are reminiscent of a telecaster but with slightly more punch, and the playability is superb. The tuning stability is perfect as well.

I recently purchased a Gibson ES 345. I heard Gibson has had QC issues in the past so I was little nervous. But to be honest, in regards to the 345 I received, Gibson's QC was on point! However, getting the guitar was a nightmare. I placed an order with Sweetwater back in January 2021. They promised to have it by mid March, then mid April, then the beginning of May, then they quit promising an arrival date all together and literally said, "Maybe sometime in August...we hope." That was the final straw, I cancelled the order and purchased it from GC and it arrived a week later. To sum it up...I give Gibson an A on QC, but a C- on production. But perhaps this can be the case were one effects the other. Churning out guitars sooner may adversely impact QC. Just a thought.

I actually like the things Gibson is doing with the app and record label. They've also been highlighting up and coming guitarists and working with some of the well established bands. If we want more guitar based music, the resources they're developing are important parts. The app is a fantastic tool for beginners to learn how to play and be entertained while doing so. Its like guitar hero but you're actually playing and really learning chords, scales, licks, and techniques. And the record label is important because they're aren't many labels out there that are looking to take a chance on rock music. Sure Gibson made some questionable business choices in the past but the things they're doing now are good for the guitar community as a whole, regardless of your preferred brand of guitar.

Gibson still has a ways to go to change their reputation with dealers as you have mentioned here. What they have done with the Epiphone line is outstanding and the guitars are pretty darn good. The headstock shape is closer to what is on a Gibson guitar and the pickups sound really good. They will get there but it will take time. Their custom shop still does great work.

I once heard someone say that fender is like Ikea Furniture, reliable, comfortable, and cheaper. And Gibson is a luxury brand. A lot more work goes into a 335 than a Stratocaster. And Gibson has more variety I’d argue
@oskarileikos
@oskarileikos 3 жыл бұрын
Good analogy! I disagree with the last notion though. If you think about it, the Les Paul, SG, ES-335, ES-345, 355 (mono), ES-175, Flying V and Explorer, which are the most famous Gibson guitars (the only one guitar missing is the Firebird), are basically the same guitar in different clothes. If you take Telecaster's electronics and hardware and put them in a Jazzmaster, you essentially have a Tele with am offset body. A guitar that sure looks like a JM but definitely sounds like a Tele. Same applies with any Fender's electronics and hardware in a different model's body. With Gibsons, if you take Les Paul's electronics and hardware and put them in an ES-335, well, you now have a 335 that has nothing special about it. Or if you take the electronics and hardware from an ES-175 and put them in an SG, you have a normal SG. So in a way almost every Gibson is just the same guitar with a different appearence.

Put a Guitar Center sign on your building and a freight truck filled with Gibsons will miraculously appear. There is a 42 year old guitar shop in my town that was an authorized Gibson dealer and OEM repair shop for the majority of it's existence. The owner could walk into the Gibson plant and be greeted by his first name for years. Now he can no longer carry that brand and the last time he tried to order repair parts they told them they couldn't find an account number under his name....after 42 years!!! By no small coincidence, all of the local shops in the area, but his, have sold out to Music & Arts (owned by Guitar Center). Those M&A stores are ghost towns. They carry practically no inventory and the parking lots typically have 1 car in them at any given time (the employee). In my own opinion, Gibson and Guitar Center are working together to keep Guitar Center as the primary dealer in smaller markets and shut small shops out. I'd have to go to Dallas, TX, 300 miles away, to find a non- Guitar Center shop that carries Gibsons. The point is, Gibson would rather ship 500 units to one Guitar Center or large independent, than ship 5 -10 units each to smaller shops. They are manipulating the market.

I like what Phil McKnight said about selling the big three used years ago. If you try and sell a PRS, people will be like, "I don't know, there's a fingerprint on it, I think this has been held at some point. I'll give you $50 for it." For Fender they'll just give you 60% of MSRP unless you tried to relic it yourself or something. For Gibson you'll show up with a LP Studio and the Gibson logo will be upside down and they buyer will be like, "Yep, they'll do that." On a side note, I personally really like Gibson guitars. I know people love to hate on them, but I usually like the way they feel and sound.

I WAS a Gibson fan ever since I bought my first Gibson, an SG Standard with the Maestro tail, back in 1968. I've owned various LPs, 330s. 335s, SGs and even a first year Nighthawk. Having been disappointed in Gibson's decline in quality, in 1994 a friend of mine turned me on to PRS and I bought a used 1990 PRS LE. After I met Paul at a GC near Chicago in 1995, I bought a new Custom 24 and 10th Anniv Artist... and I've never looked back. With a Core PRS, I don't have to play it first to find it if it "talks to me" as they all do every time. I've bought, played and sold several PRS since 1995. The QC in their Core, S2 and SE lines are absolutely impeccable. When Paul retires, I hope the PRS innovation and QC continue. BTW, the only Gibson I still have is my all original '68 SG.

Hey guys keep up the good work! I was watching Trogly's show today and he mentioned that Gibson is working on more direct consumer sales. Fender has had the mod shop as well. I just can't help but wonder if dealers who had to buy a certain dollar amount of Gibson or Fender inventory and give exclusivity to these two big companies (at a cost to them for not selling other brands) are now scratching their head wondering how they did so much for distribution and the manufacturers can sell direct to customers now. Just curious if you went through that when you were a brick and mortar dealer? I sold BASF auto paints as a distributor to PRS and lost the business when DuPont factory reps came in to sell direct. Funny thing was Paul hired a guy on my recommendation who had a factory relationship with DuPont and that was why I lost the business. Then when BASF went to get the business back they cut me out of the loop. It was a bitter pill and a lesson that big manufacturers will do what they need to sell their product no matter how much you do for them. Ancient history in my life LOL, but I would hate to be a small musical instrument dealer these days for that reason.

True Story, as I remember it. I worked at a music store in the late 1990s. We had sold 5 very expensive Les Pauls. Over the next few months all of those guitars had come back and needed repairs. We would send them back to Gibson and when they came back to us they were not repaired, some of them had not even been touched. We refunded the customers and sold them other guitars. So when the rep walked in the front door the owner took all 5 guitars and set them outside the store and told the guy don't ever come back. Literally in the middle of the argument this lady walks in the door and was watching what was going on. She stopped the rep and said. My dad retired from Gibson and his last job before retiring was cutting the headstocks off of Epiphone guitars and putting Gibson headstocks on them. The rep turned around and left.

I worked at a music store in the late 80's. At that time you had to stock 20 grand worth of Gibson product to be a gibson dealer.

Rule #1 of Business: When a customer wants to give you money, don't tell them to put away their wallet. Casino wants to give Gibson money. Gibson - take their money!

The only outfit in my town that carries Gibson is Guitar Center; the others don’t even bother carrying Epiphone.

I’m a super fan of Gibson, probably more than I should be, but I love them. All that said, I agree with Baxter, you have to call out the good and the bad.

I've played a few handfuls of Gibsons over the years but only owned 3. I'm a firm believer that it's just hype. People get gooey over Gibson mostly because it's been around. Just being around isn't good enough, though (hell, McDonald's has been around awhile too, but that doesn't make them good, either). You need to have good QC, they really don't. We all know that's not a priority there. They're hanging on to the name simply because the predecessors kept it afloat. I had a mid 90s LP studio, an early 2000s worn SG, and a late 90s classic LP. Of those 3, the SG was definitely the best one, but that's not really a compliment, as they all had issues. I had the SG for almost a year, and the LPs were sold or traded within 2 months of acquiring them. I disagree with the QC getting better. Maybe a few good ones sneak through, but... Marginally doesn't count. Gibsons are needles in a hay stack; every so often you'll find what you're looking for, but mostly, it's just fancy straw.

One year later, is the situation different/better on the Gibson front? Do you sell Gibson guitars etc now, even?

I’m waiting 8 months and counting for a Gibson es339 ,to arrive in Thomann (Europe). It’s becoming ridiculous at this stage. I could go with an Eastman T484 for under half the price and I believe it’s probably a better guitar but I still want the Gibson to add to my other Gibson guitar as I haven’t got an ES thin line in my collection.

Honesty is the ONLY policy. Gibson got better because people finally told the truth about the QC. They should be thanking you at least partially for your totally honest feedback. Totally Authentic.

I’ve been told by some former Gibson luthiers that they lost most of their builders during the pandemic. And at least two have told me that Epiphones are better build quality currently.
